  • In how to approach BB passages we described our overall approach to BB passages as a whole. Now that we have a big picture framework let's dive into some of the specific skills we need for different question types starting with pathways.
Pathways are those acronym heavy parts of passages that tend to go over most students' heads they look like alphabet soup and can seem really intimidating. In this video, we will discuss how to initially approach pathways, how to recognize pathway-based questions, and finally how to break down pathways and answer pathway-based questions.

Glad you found the video helpful. I will probably have a CARS video out this week or early next week. Then I will probably work on CP since other people have requested that video too! No guarantees, but I will do my best to have that video out by the end of next week. Good luck on your test!

What have you found to help students with understanding the big picture or main idea of a science passage on the MCAT? You can get a lot of answers correct by knowing your content and linking them to keywords, but the questions which ask about the purposes or flaws of an experiment - I find - to be quite difficult. Maybe another way to ask the question is what improves comprehension of the science passages on the MCAT? Lots of practice?

I actually don’t think you need to understand the big picture of or main idea of a science experiment to get those types of questions right. Instead, you will often need to work on understanding the methods portion of an experiment and integrating that with the data or new information in the question stem. For example if a questions asks about what could have constituted the control of an experiment and they gave you some data showing the results of that control I would first have my students start by thinking about what conditions could actually produce that data. From there I will then have them look through the answer choices and go through one by one thinking about whether or not that data could be produced by the conditions listed. Additionally, as students go through the answer choice I have them eliminate anything that matches one of the experimental conditions because the control won’t just replicate one of the experimental questions.
Does that make sense? If you have a specific AAMC or UWorld question in mind let me know I have access to both of those resources and can take a look at a specific example of the questions you are struggling with.

@@EightfoldMCAT It does make sense. It is a bit difficult to operationalize it without a sample question (which is why I’m thankful that you offered the chance to take a look at one). I will try to find one, and I’ll send it to your email.

      Hi Garrett,
      Thanks for reaching out.
I will be taking new students come May as will have a couple of students finishing up with me then. If you want we could set up a free consult to chat more about how I can help. If you would like to do that you can send me an email at: chriscernac@eightfoldlearning.com
I also have an opening in my group tutoring called office hours (if you want to learn more about it you can go to this link: eightfoldlearning.com/officehours/)
