    We still have 2 4960’s. They both have over 11000 hours! We have Trimble GPS on one of them. Still run great. We used to have 3 but sold one. Great tractors and easy to work on!

      Hans Stopfer I believe they have just over 200 HP at the drawbar.

      You are right the power on the drawbar is of course lower than the engine power.

      I ran a 4960 that had been over the meter twice, and was around 26k hours. Operation that owned it dropped a new transmission in, and I saw it again with more than 35k hours, still working in the field! Don't make em like that anymore!

    I farmed through all of the 90's and got to run some of the best Deere built from early and late model 4020's, 4320, 4440, 4640, 4840, 4450 fwa, 2630 and 4555, 4955, 4960, and 8400. Felt like Captain Kirk when we got the 8400, if I could just pick one for personal use a 4440 is had to beat.

    I was kid in the 90s (30 now) and remember going to all the fairs showing cows, between shows I'd go to the dealer displays and buy 1/64 scale tractors and equipment (mostly JD because that's what we had). It's been fun over the years being able to run a lot of the tractors I collected in my childhood, and now owning some too. I think most of the late 90s tractors were just perfect, the right blend of mechanical simplicity and modern hydraulics/comfort.
    Keep up the awesome videos!

    I find it interesting that even when the JD 4960 and in the JD 9000 series video all looked like they were GPS equipped but when planting corn, they used row markers. Then the JD4960 pulling a notill drill didn't use markers. I was impressed that the articulated tractors were very price competitive for the HP they offered. The Deutz Allis 9170 @ 170hp was a lot of tractor for $66,000 but I liked the Deutz green paint better. Not because I'm just adding on but my eyes favor JD Green!

    • @chasesblog

    we ran a 4960 for years as mainly a tillage tractor and some dirt road work if we needed it and I loved that tractor. Put a gps system on it the year before we sold it and took over some of the planting jobs, that'd been contracted out till then, and then upgraded to an 8130. I wouldn't mind getting another one if we ever could as a backup tillage tractor.

    I have always liked the looks of the 4960 John Deere. I remember when i was in college the farmer who rented our farm purchased one of the first 4960's in our area. It was equipped with 18.4 x 46 duals, first ones i had seen on a tractor. He had it hooked to a 30' disk that he had been pulling with a JD 8630 articulated tractor. It handled that disk pretty well for it only having 200 hp. I knew then the days of the articulated tractors in our area were numbered. They were. I now know of only two in our area and they are older units used for pulling out stuck sweet corn mules. Now with 400+ hp row crop tractors i never see them coming back to our area. I still like the looks of the 4455 with FWA better. I think it is the best looking tractor JD made since the 20 series.

    I agree with Todd Family Farm's that this seemed like a simpler time with good memories. My favorite tractor would have been the 4960, out of those shown. That being said I started with a new JD 4840 when I was twelve and moved to a 4850 with MFWD later which was a leap at putting power to the ground. John Deere lost something when they moved to the newer tractors. The 4630-4840-4850-4955 Tractors have a cult following around here to this very day. Farmers do not want to get rid of them... Not for what they have to pay to replace them...

    Remember two local farms around here always trying to one up each other. One ran a 3594 case and the other a 4960. Dad always said the 4960 couldn't pull it self out of it's own way bc it was so heavy. He was kind of partial since he was the one that sold the case to the other guy lol

    I like this channel thanks for putting it together. I’d like look through all your videos. Could post a link to something like brand specific videos? Like Ford tractors 600-800 era? Thanks this is cool. I grew up on a tobacco farm here in the western piedmont of North Carolina. I am the first generation since the early 1600’s in my family who’s not a farmer. Believe me it’s by choice. Circumstances prevented me from being able to do it. I won’t get into all that but farming is in my blood like it is most of you all. And I do own a couple of older farm tractors and I garden and putter with it. And probably here in the next year I’ll get a fence up and raise a couple or 3 beef cows. Btw my favorite tractor is the one ibgrew up on. A 881 Ford Select-o-speed. Diesel. I just love the way it sounds and looks. Not ever been into the big tractors nobody had them around here until a few years ago. And they don’t need them. Barely hit a field around here big enough to turn it around! Lol!

      I think it's in the nose cone right above the headlights. You might be able to see the screen that only 60 series have there. It's hard to see in the video though.

    2 of the best blue tractor ranges ever, the 30 series Ford and the 70 series NH. I run a 8730 every day on a mixer wagon, never had a 70 series but you quite often see them with massive hours on them.

    What on earth was the Massey Doing? Ever heard of topping the field before hitting it with the plough?
    Great tractors, but some terrible cultivating.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Massey 5200 is no tilling soybeans in the field that stayed too wet to work up. They sprayed herbicide on the weeds. By harvest the beans fill the field and weeds just dissipate back into the soil.

    • @Zero01k
      @Zero01k 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny thing about no-till, there's no tillage, the implement being pulled is a 30 foot (9 meter) no-till grain drill, not a plow.

      Part of SDF now, Same-Deutz-Fahr, there is another couple tractor brands within in it too if I remember correctly it's Lamborghini and Hurlimann a formerly Swiss company. SDF is one of the largest tractor brands in the world behind AGCO I think. Haven't seen any of the new Deutz-Fahrs in person yet but there is a New Zealand company that is the importer for the US market. I'll be curious to see how they fare as even tractors here in the states are moving towards a global platform unlike the previous NA, Euro and India spec tractors. I'd like to try out a new Deutz-Fahr if they ever come up to New England, after living on a dairy farm in the Swiss alps it would be interesting to see how they would make out in our slopes, hill sides and small plots in the green mountain state.
