    For some LS motors that haven’t been maintained well, to include incorrect oil types at regular intervals, the problem could simply be a clogged lifter . Running a good quality filter like a Wix and keeping a synthetic blend or full synthetic in the system will help too. If you have a tick and no sludge anyway. The good thing is that the lifters can be cleaned without removing the heads. Just make sure to chancge the oils and filter soon after .

      I’ve always run synthetic in my truck and have owned it for 12 years now. They definitely had issues with the castech heads cracking though...

    Good video! This is exactly my issue on my 04 Tahoe 5.3. Been losing coolant; sludge and now just the last few weeks lifter noise. Will be replacing both heads with lifters.

    The ups and downs of having Aluminum heads vortex heads are good but when they were manufacture they made them straight aluminum no other mixed alloys there good but weak summit vortex heads are good little heavier do to mixed alloys but last way longer Chevy will do anything to get better gas mileage but there trucks don’t last anymore your lucky to get 200 thousand out them they need to keep it old school or lower the prices because they don’t seem to be worth it anymore hard earn money go’s a long way when it’s hard earned it seems they make them die out after a while like computers then you have to buy another one I have a 1955 Chevy pick up and I’ll have it an till I die a true old reliable built to last vehicle.

      @@bikermike I actually haven’t worked on the car yet. I believe I have a cracked head. How can I tell if I have a cracked head ? There’s definitely coolant in my engine because it’s losing it’s viscosity and it’s turning to like water.

      @@bikermike I will begin by removing my valve covers and pressurize the coolant system to 15 psi to check for signs of coolant making it’s way to the engine.

    I’m pretty sure this happened to me. Pulled the valve cover and noticed there was that chocolate milk stuff all over it. I think I might have both heads replaced so I’ll never have to worry about this issue again!

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve had no further issues with mine since replacing them. Got them both at autozone. Be sure to do a few frequent oil changes immediately after as there will residue left in engine and it will cause oil filter to become clogged and you will loose oil pressure. Another symptom you can observe of cracked head and sludge in oil.

      biker mike I appreciate you replying to me bro. I went to the shop and they told me that because we don’t know how long I’ve had the issue they’re afraid of they replace the heads it’ll cause further issues down the line. I’m skeptical because you’ve clearly had good luck. So I’m inconclusive lol

    Wow this is exactly what is happening to my 2005 GMC Sierra 5.3l V at 171000 miles. Do they program these trucks to self destruct at a certain mileage? Thanks for the video. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth saving the truck or not... How much did it cost for the mechanic to do the work? I'll look in the comments in case you already gave that info. Thanks!

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it cost around 600 labour, plus gaskets, spark plugs coolant etc... Mine is going good still. A new truck wasn't an option for me so I took the chance.... If you do decide to do it I highly recommend doing very frequent oil and filter changes like every 1,000 miles or less 3 or 4 times to get the rest of sludge out of engine,, It will clog the filter.

    I have a 2002 Avalanche. I'm having bad lifter tick and my oil pressure is at 10-15 at idle. Start up is rough and I began stalling on me. I'm going to switch out the spark plugs, wires, and packs to see if it gets better. I do have to keep topping off the engine coolant and there are no visible signs of leaks

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check the valve covers for goop, check water pump, pressure test cooling system. If no goop on valve covers, could be a head gasket. These heads are prone to cracking though...

    Good vid. I just found alot of coolant in my oil the other day when I changed it I think I caught it in time. Going to pull off the valve covers today like in your vid. Do you remember off hand what the shop charged for repair? I know it's a big repair and not sure I want to do it myself

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it was 5-7hours 500-700$, I didn't want to tackle it myself as it is my only vehicle. If I had a second vehicle id be more inclined to tackle it. Mine was definitely cracked and has been fine now for almost one year now. There was bad run of heads for GM 5.3s by Castech I do believe. Hope this helps your diagnosis, and sorry to hear. It really sucks they had this issue the 5.3 is an awesome motor otherwise!

    hey my truck had gaskets put on it before i got the truck and didnt leak in the cold weather but now its getting warm its dripping on passenger side bottom of head. it dosnt leak until the motor get warm like 205 degrees it hold pressure in the cooling system and no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil. i wonder if the gasket just blowed out ? the radiator was plugged got that fixed so i just dont know if the head is cracked or a bad gasket ? i have a steel block not aluminum its a 2003 silverado 4x4 oh yeah no smoke blowing out the tail pipes the truck runs strong just started to leak some

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume your leak is coolant? I know they are also prone to leak at water pump gaskets, but if not I would guess it’s a head/block surface issue maybe.
      If it’s oil, valve cover gaskets.. Where they are prone to cracking it mixes in with oil like in my video but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t crack else where. Clean off the engine and try and pinpoint the leak to see if it’s at gasket surface.

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also if it’s front of engine, passenger side bottom of head that’s where the water pump mounts on, the surface of block is really bad for getting a good seal, Ive done water pump gasket twice and it’s hard to get good seal there.

  • @michaelbaskinmichael9862

    How is that going to tell you it’s cracked , it ain’t until you pressure test it you could of just blown gasket

    • @bikermike
      @bikermike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because a pressure test failed to show a leak both times. This even identified which head was cracked. The cracks are very small.. (Castech heads)

      @@bikermike I’m having bad luck with cheap head gaskets , now I have put a new set on a rebuilt motor then started it up and passenger side leaks, but not in cylinder yet. Tightened it up some more it quit leaking but other side started leaking. I wondering if I should pull it back out cause oil in antifreeze makes it hard to seat rings
