  • Experienced deckhand, Randy Kramer of Gentleman Sportfishing (at Channel Islands Sportfishing - Oxnard, CA) talks about flylining (just a line and the hook, no weight) a live sardine to catch yellowtail. Randy's seminar includes: flurocarbon leaders, hook size, bait selection, proper handling of the bait, hook placement and fighting the fish to gaff.

    Lift UP slow, wind in fast going down.
    My favorite saying as well. Let the gear do
    the work it was designed to do. Thanks for the

    I love the part about keeping the line in front of you when your fighting a fish. I think this could apply to most boat fish fighting situations to be honest.

      For sure, whether you are on an open party boat with 20-30 people, or a private boat with one buddy.

    best way to handle a sardine is to trap it..(hard part) use your index and your thumb to collar(ring it) the head..gently... then take your pinky and gently choke the tail...(ring your pinky finger around the tail)...thia will help not disturb the scales.. a healthy bait.tossed into the ocean is a lively bait...fish are like kittens...they will chase a lively red dot laser..

    Excellent video! When targeting yellowtail with live bait is there a preferred type of hook used? I've seen people fish with different types of hooks and I like to know their differences. Can you share some advice?

    • @socalsalty
      @socalsalty  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yellows don't have teeth, so you want to use a bait style hook (J hook, not circle), that's appropriate to the size of the bait being used. In general, I typically use from say 1 to 2/0. Good luck out there

    East coasters call it freelining as far as I know it’s always been freelining live bait. Is there a difference ?

    • @socalsalty
      @socalsalty  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hadn’t heard that before. You guys also call mahi mahi dolphin. We call them dorado. Just an East/West thing I guess.

  • @ricewinner2596

    The way I "cup" the bait is use your pinky finger to hold close to the tail and use your index and thumb the hold is head... This keeps the scales intact.

    what would be good mono line size....20lb? targeting yellowtails in the 20lb range

    • @socalsalty
      @socalsalty  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      On that particular day, they wanted 20 mono tipped with 20 fluoro. I started the day using 30 though. You just got to find what they'll bite. Start heavier and go from there. Listen to the crew's recommendation! They want you to catch fish

    nice video...I think he is using an avet?...he said don't put in full strike...I'm not sure if all is using this type of reel on this boat...I still have Diawa sealine...and yes..I don't duck with the drag when I'm on..lol...
    I did see one guy on a 1/2day boat at Rocky point...who kept fiddling with his drag every second😰😰...he was just fiddling and fiddling...it was like an old Penn senator...soaking this huge sardine that was just not healthy.( beater down hardly any scales)...in 10 minutes watching this guy.. he reeled in reluctantly with a 15 pound Calico😰👍👍😰💕🎣🎣...

      @tonyharp7129 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow he should have had it weighed because a 15 lb calico is a world record. current record is 14lb 7oz
