I love this considering that I blast Cherub Rock every time I'm driving out of the Ravenswood neighborhood on Irving Park road, without knowing until now that this was the exact place he was driving when he heard this riff in his head!
As a guitarists I can agree that nothing hurts more than coming up with a great riff and then you try and play it again and cant remember it or it just doesnt sound the same. It sucks so bad lol, so now everytime I practice or jam I have a track recording everything bc you literally never know when some random thing you play is that little seed that can grow into a monster.
I always used to think “if it’s good I’ll remember it” But then once I got a phone and could record things on the fly, I’d come back to things I’d recorded just a couple of days earlier would be really excited by them but would have absolutely no memory of them. It’s like a present from yourself to yourself.
It’s so obvious, the universe works in mysterious ways man, bro literally channeled the creative source in his head and turned it into an amazing song.
Also remember how Jerry Cantrell wrote 'Stone' which is an awesome riff. He broke his arm, so he couldn't play his guitar so he just hummed this riff in his head
I always thought it was a ripoff of Neu’s “Hallogallo” (at least those octave Es in the intro-listen to it; I can’t believe that By/Tor was the influence not Hallogallo.) I also thought the Who Wants Honey part was influenced by Cheap Trick’s “Oo La La.”
@@joewood1055 as a guitarist I can agree that it happens alot. Ive caught myself before playing something awesome just to realize I heard on a show or a cd or movie or something that was literally years ago and it just sat dormant and you think you came up with it. It happens all the time to musicians as were always hearing things we like or think we could tweak or like I said you forget about it and 1 day boom.
Cherub Rock was the hook that caught me… then everything else, before and since… bought a grey strat… had vinyl bats custom made for it (like Billy’s)…
It’s always like that. You come up with the best riffs while you’re out and don’t have a guitar handy. And a lot of the time is part of the rhythm of the moment. So even if you can remember the notes, if you can’t remember the rhythm it’s almost useless.
In early 2002 I was 6 years out of high school and still trying to figure stuff out. My best friend from high school went to IU and got the degree and by that time was living in Chicago working his first real job. One day he calls me and asks if I want to sublet his room in the apartment he had with another young guy. They just weren’t getting along. I was living in Indianapolis and was like I guess why not :). He picks me up literally two hours later because was home for the weekend and boom I’m on my way to Chicago to live haha. I shared a place with some people and it was already crowded so they were like bye bye. Well this place was on Greenview avenue. I was and am a huge SP fan but this was early internet still. So it wasn’t just common to know everything about anything if you wanted to. Anyway long story short I rambled around those streets right there in the same area Billy and the band had as there complete world as I think he put it once only literally a few years earlier. When I found out it was so crazy and I enjoyed hitting the streets even more
@@horrifyingcat well have you listened to around 3:55 seconds in the song? The rhythm and guitar chords are almost exactly the same, the rhythm is different in both songs, but it is basically the same structure and harmonic idea as that part of the rush song And plus, I don't think it's ripped off, I think inspired is the right word, because they sound pretty inspired from one another, but not the same
Cherub Rock in Sage's Kotsenburg's snowboard videoclip was sooo good, that I don't know if the official Pumpkins video was better. And The Official Pumpkins Video was something that good, like The Cinamon Girl Video by Type O Negative. Sooo good 😊😊😊
“… somebody picked me up.” That’s where it starts for artists.. they get the pampering and life becomes too comfortable and slowly, the moments of inspiration dry up. Hence why the Pumpkins songs were so great for about five years and then they just disintegrated.
Imagine if this gem got wasted if the driver turned around and said "how bout this traffic?"

What a trip!!
You visit the Taproom often?

He brought the song to Chamberlin and Vig and together they made the best possible thing out of it and put that on Siamese Dream.
@@standinsilence while Iha and Darcy were slackin off!!!! (Idk)
@@ok9908
Oh well at least Iha did contribute a bit to the songwriting.
And as for D'Arcy?
Well I heard she smoked more crack than Rick James.. :-p
@@standinsilence she just learned the songs and was good for the image of the band. In my (wasn't even alive in the 90s person) view.
Thank god for those uninterrupted 25 minutes!! Ive probably listened to that song 10,000x
A riff that changes lives!
The early Metro shows before they broke big were unbelievable !!! What a time to live in Chicago !!!
The universe was flowing through him
Omg I just realized that Kirstin Dunst and Billy Corgan could be twins😮
And I bet you have eyes for the neighbor boy as well.
That’s the riff that made me fall in love with the Smashing Pumpkins! 🤘🏾
So awesome to hear how the song came about. One of the greatest rock riffs ever.
Also remember how Jerry Cantrell wrote 'Stone' which is an awesome riff. He broke his arm, so he couldn't play his guitar so he just hummed this riff in his head
i dno't listen to them as much anymore but 'siamese dream' is undeniably the sleeper GOAT 90's rock album.
Perfect example, ideas just sprout at any moment for musicians
Really wish we would get a deep dive on other songs besides their big singles
I JUST learned I lived 2 towns over from Billy in Arlington Heights… pretty cool.
I've also heard that he had it in his head, but it actually turned out to be the bridge of a Rush song. I think By-Tor and The Snow Dog
Yes. U r correct. Corgan even says it’s a rip off. Maybe not a conscious rip off but …
He’s talking about the melody part I think not the beginning
He heard the melody before the verse kicks in.

I love those chords in that tunes.
My Favorite Rock Song Ever!
Thank goodness that riff came up in his head, or we wouldn't have the most explosive opener from the Pumpkins
This story has changed so many times. First it’s this then it was By-Tor And The Snow Dog now this
That's definitely one of the best drums leading up to the guitar solo's of the 90's it's jam!
It's amazing he came up with this in the 1800's before phones
Fantastic riff
Super track.. what an opener
Best opener of am album. Really set the tone for the album
@@davezedman definitely.. massive
Every guitarist knows exactly what he means, too. You hear it in your head and desperately try to not lose it before you get to your guitar.
Cabbie’s like “Ey, just doing my job heya.” Song gone.
That song is still one of my favorites from the 90s…hands down. And to hear his story about it makes it that much more.
love these stories how the song a and riffs came ABOUT

Such An Amazing Story From Highland Park’s Finest William Patrick Corgan
C-dub, cool it on that, got it?
God gave it to him
I honestly get that feeling as well except its music that randomly gets stuck in my head 😂
He was in the cab when he said, "Let me OUT!"

Wow such an intresting but simple story which i feel thats how most songs get created in like a mind concept just waiting to be recorded and saved
Wow.. That's amazing story
Cherub rock is so underrated
Bro no its not 😂
Not really. It’s one of the more iconic songs in alternative rock.
That’s my favorite song! 🤯
Genius.
It is Rhinoceros 2.0… he knows it
and then some goofball will say he ripped it off from some rush song
Well he actually admitted in a interview that the intro was inspired by rush, so theyre not wrong but ye

Well then you are calling corgan a goofball cause he himself said it was unintentional ripoff
Would have been funny if the taxi driver had started humming ghost town by the specials ' it would of ended up sounding like tales of the unexpected 😂

I feel so vindicated im not weird for humming riffs into my phone 😂😂
Hey Billy you have anymore of those Zero shirts?
Their breakthrough hit, though people think Today was that was just their biggest from Siamese dream
I'm a little confused the music box theater is nowhere near Austin and Addison the music box theater is on 3733 N.Southport
Wasn’t it a rush song he got the riff off of?

Billy said in the past that Cherub Rock is a rip-off a Rush riff.
Can anybody explain the snare intro ?
I bet he'd just been listening to Rush
“This was back before phones” yeah no sh*t Billy 😂
Wait I thought he said it was a rip off of the middle of By-Tor the Snowdog by Rush
Chorus is Ooh La La by cheap trick. Basically a nod to both bands.

Good thing your drug dealer didn't say anything for 25 mins!

Just a reminder, that everything is ripped off... and that's ok.

So it include him controlling someone. 😅😅
But um... Didnt you say you ripped off rush.......

The riff was copied from Swervedriver's Son of Mustang Ford
