I loved this episode, Emmet!! These guys should be playing around more (in the clubs), since The Manhattan Transfer is just finishing up their (50th AnNiVeRsArY) tour!🥲 So, the demand for vocal groups (like the Freshman), is current & popular! I hope to see them...soon! Thanks for having them as your guests!💖
The Four Freshmen are simply the best. There used to be a really awesome guitarist as well. Takes such skill to harmonize vocals with some incredibly original syncopation.
Is there sheet music for this tune? I’ve looked through the plentiful pdf’s that John knuttson let me look through and I couldn’t find this particular one. It’s def a fav.
There have long been ghost bands, but ghost quartets is a new concept for me. Having heard the original (a lot), I'm less than thrilled. I hear no resemblance -- if anything, influenced by both the Freshman and the Hi-Los, two great groups whose work was vastly superior. I had the pleasure of hearing two nights of a reunion of the Hi-Los in a Chicago club, probably in the '80s. I never heard the Freshman live, but they were a wonderful part of the soundtrack of my coming of age.
Emmet I'm not gonna sugar coat. I was personally confused and disappointed that you shafted Jake's trumpet solo. He's an amazing, worldclass and first call trumpeter... In fact, after all these years I've been working with him on my hard bop projects I didn't even know he sang! Carry on I guess...
My dad always said that the most beautiful musical instrument was the human voice. I agree.
4:48 when it goes to just the singers its such a magical change, I can’t be the only one thinking that it would last longer
Too good... This lovely song taken with such solture
A wonderful performance with the singer quartet. Greetings from Switzerland.
YOOOOO TJ FROM NEW JAZZ UNDERGROUND 🔥 thats the collab that needs to happen!!
I used to see this group whenever they came to Boston around 35 years ago. Still great, all new people of course.
I just love this! fabulous arrangement, vocals and piano. Wow.
Love it! Am still waiting for the trumpet solo tho ;)
Yeah what happened lol, he was about to go for it before the bassist

that smile, that damn smile
No trumpet solo 🫣😔
One of those guys can’t sing without a trumpet in his hand. It’s actually really sad 😔
He solos on every song except this one. So it was just part of the show.
I love your sarcasm James 😉

Jake takes solos on I believe all of the other tunes in this set. I’ve watched at least the one on “When You’re Smiling.”
These are the Four Freshmen - like biden is Trump !!!!!!!!!
What is that even supposed to mean?
I would prefer more time for the singers.
