- If you are planning on camping in Grand Teton National Park this year, you have come to the right spot!
My first job as a park ranger was in Grand Teton, and the campsites in Grand Teton are fantastic! Before planning your camping trip in Grand Teton there are a few things you need to know and I am so excited to talk you through your options! I’m sharing my favorite campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park, important information, and how to actually reserve a site in Grand Teton.

I have had good luck finding impromptu sites in the dispersed camping area just south of Moran on the east side of Highway 89.
This is a great overview of front country camping options. I have three nights booked at the Coulter Bay campground this summer. I usually stay at Signal Mountain, but, as you said, the vibe at Colter Bay Village is so nice that I decided to stay in the area this year. I do prefer the showers and laundry at Signal Mountain.
You'll have to let me know which one you like better! They are both great, though, but I do understand favoring the showers and laundry at Signal!
Very informative videos! I watched your videos last fall and they greatly helped me plan my reservations. I am staying in Yellowstone NP at Canyon CG and Coulter Bay in Grand Teton NP in August. I am waiting for dates to open at Glacier NP for Labor Day week. I am riding my motorcycle and towing a mini-mate camper. Thank you for helpful information!!!👍

I was just there last week. It was beautiful. There were also some nice remote camp up in shadow mountain for those who want a little more adventure and away from the crowd. Of course you’ll need a truck or an suv, 4x4 preferred but not needed during dry season. Don’t recommend small cars.
Yes, Shadow Mountain is my favorite boondocking spot. The views!!
I have so enjoyed your channel. My husband and I r leaving next week to head out to grand teton and Yellowstone. I’m concerned about our back country pass. We weren’t able to book it online because we didn’t know dates then. Anyway how likely is it that we will get a back country pass walking up the day before? We would really like to get on trail before it gets crazy but we won’t be able to get to the park the day before we r planning to go out until at least 12 or 1. Is it a possibility do you think? Thanks for your help!
They usually have something available, you just might need to be flexible, as many of the most popular spots get snatched up quickly. Get there as early as you can!
Just found your channel and new (65 years young) to camping. Your instructional videos are great for me. I recently purchased a rooftop tent and can't find anywhere how the National Parks classify a RTT. Are they considered a tent? A pop up? It sits on a Toyota Highlander. What's the best campsite to pick for a RTT? Thank you.
Typically you can book anything besides the walk-up tent sites. Sometimes the parks have tent sites that you have to park further away from and then walk your gear to your site. Those ones don't usually allow rooftop tents. But if it's just a regular tent or RV site, a RTT is usually just fine!

Your video was very informative! Trying to plan for next Summer and would like a week before or after our Yellowstone reservation (July 8-15). So, if i want to book July 1-8, I should go in February1, or February 15 to book 15-21? Is the release based on the check-in or checkout date.
It's based on the check in date. When they get next year's schedule up, you should be able to click on the date you want on recreation.gov and it will tell you when it opens up for reservations!
Is there a campground in Grand Teton that will allow both a camper and tent on the same site? My family will be camping this way in Yellowstone before heading down to the Tetons, but I'm having trouble finding an option for that setup in GTNP.
Most of them do. You can't take a camper to Jenny Lake, but all the rest should have room for both a camper and a tent :) I have used that exact set up in Colter Bay!
As always- you give extra insight based on ranger knowledge- Quick question- when looking at Gros Ventre sites; most all site specific descriptions indicate max 1 vehicle- but most pictures include a trailer and truck or RV and tow car. If the site can accomodate width to park a truck or tow car next to RV/trailer, are they allowed? Pictures say yes, site instructions say no? Is it based on whether you can park 100% on site gravel or paving?
Many of the sites that are more suited to tents only allow a max of 1 vehicle. There's a high likelihood that most of the bigger sites with more room for parking have already been snatched up for the summer.
Do you have any tips or suggestions for dispersed camping?
I use Campendium.com to find dispersed camping near the parks. You'll find more info on camping in great detail on dirtinmyshoes.com!
This is so helpful as I am trying my best to plan for a Teton visit this summer. Question- I’m a solo traveler, no rv, just car camping in my Subaru Outback. When you book a tent site I imagine that it come with a spot to park your car- so you could sleep in your car and not a tent?
Also, if I book somewhere else other than Jenny Lake, can I drive my car to do the hikes to Jenny Lake- is there a parking lot at specific trailheads? Can you recommend a site that would work best for my situation? Thanks so much!!!
Yes, you'll have a place to park your car for most tent sites...just make sure you don't book a walk-in site. You can't sleep in a vehicle in those ones. And yes, there is a large parking lot at Jenny Lake for people who aren't camping there!

If I wanted to stay at Jenny Lake CG for 4 straight days in August, does it make sense to book each day as it becomes available (on that 6 month rolling schedule) and hope you can get the same site each day? Or would you just wait until the 4th day becomes available and hope you can get a good site for all 4 days in a row?
No, you can book all four nights when the 1ST DAY becomes available!
Colter Bay RV Park claims their largest is 45’ total with your car? How realistic do you feel that is? Anyone experience staying there with a 40’ mh with a towed?
We've had no problem getting a 28' trailer and 20' truck in those sites...they are quite large!
