  • Are you thinking about moving to Reston Virginia? Let’s explore the pros and cons of living in Reston Virginia today!
Reston Virginia, often hailed as a utopian community, originated from the vision of Robert E. Simon, seeking a harmonious blend of urban amenities and rural tranquility. Established in 1961, Reston Virginiawas meticulously designed as a planned community, setting it apart from typical suburban developments. The core principle involved creating self-contained communities, incorporating green spaces, residential neighborhoods, and commercial ventures in a balanced manner, steering clear of high-density living.
While Reston Virginia offers a plethora of advantages, there are some downsides to consider. The cost of living is notably higher than the national average, with housing costs being a significant contributor. Traffic congestion during rush hours and limited late-night entertainment options are a few other challenges to bear in mind.
In retrospect, Reston Virginia's journey, from its visionary founder to its present-day thriving community, embodies the success of a meticulously planned city. The legacy of Robert E. Simon, who crafted a city that inspired similar communities globally, remains a testament to the impact of visionary urban planning.
Reston Virginia's story continues to evolve, and as it does, it stands as an exemplar of a well-balanced community offering the best of both worlds-nature and modernity. As you consider making Reston Virginia your home, weighing the pros and cons is essential to determine if this harmonious city aligns with your lifestyle and preferences.

My family moved to Reston back in 1968 when the population was less than 500. I grew up around lake Anne center. I loved that area and worked the boat rental with several friends on lake Anne plaza. This was well before all the other town centers were built.

Very cool, thanks for sharing . They are still doing boat rentals, though now some paddle boards too. Thanks for sharing.

It's great that a town center is planned. More communities should/need to do this. Reston does have limits on it's being a "walkable" residence. The town center is more like a lifestyle mall than a community. A car is required for day-to-day needs.

Nice summary, I've lived in the Reston/Herndon area since 1988. One thing you didn't mention is the annual Reston Association fee for residents, for 2024 its $817.

Thanks John good point. That goes toward the community amenities. When I lived at the Reston Town Center the RA fees didn't apply.

Lived in Reston back in ‘80’s…. It really was a diverse area back then…but now it is just crowded and overpriced! I am a country girl at ❤…. So as I became an adult, city life was not for me. I love the area I’m in now, no one on top of me, more land/yard space, etc. but it is all based on preference…if you like the city life, traffic, noisy, busy-Reston is your choice!

I grew up in "Reston" but we weren't part of Reston association. The hockey rink and McTacoHut were all within walking distance from my house in basically the only neighborhood off sunset hills between Hunter Mill and Wheelie.
Those Hunter Mill neighborhoods are some of the best in NoVa. How many other neighborhoods in NOVA have horses? Several (including the one I grew up in) off Hunter Mill. Everyone else is on top of each other.

It REALLY is that GREAT. Most people wish they could live here. Most people who want to live in Reston but cant live in Ashburn, sterling, Leesburg, etc etc etc…
By 2030, you WISH you could live in RESTON. You all better make the move now before its too late.
