When I moved back to the "home" community, these gates had become "the way of the world" . . . whether because of increased thievery or just protective attitude, I don't know. When I grew up we never locked doors or trucks. Glad to see you've lost the brace--be careful about power-lifting. As usual, complete instruction packed into concise video.
Around here locks, gates and cameras are the norm. It is due to so much thievery in this area. You can only do so much to be proactive. Those good ole days you speak of seem to be behind us. Thank you for all the compliments and I am trying hard to take it easy on the knee!!
I am looking to put a gate on my property. I live on a dead end road about a mile down. No one comes down this road but still would like a gate. Unless you lived on the road you would not know there is house at the end.😀
I am way off the road myself. Unfortunately for me curious people want to come by from time to time. So a gate ended up being necessary. We manually opened and closed it for years. I must say that this gate opener makes everyday life a little easier!!
Gate opener and build looks good! It questionable that the customer wants it there (you can just drive around it in the field), I suppose like most security it just keeps honest people honest. edit: I'm going to send you some dumbbells son! looks like your done worn the other ones out!
@@Matt-uj9wl I always say that gate and locks are just for the honest people and noisy neighbors. If someone wants to get it bad enough, no gate, lock or door will stop them! Thanks for the complement on the build!
great review, I think you over explained some areas, and missed some points, but overall, well done. I've bought the system before watching the video, but my solar panels are way bigger ( 2x 100W panels ) and the batteries never gets to 100% charged, we do open our gate 9 - 15 time a day, and over weekends its used maybe 30 times. Your placement of the actuator could lead failure ( as I did mine almost like you did, and the whole reason I got to your video. and totally a Topens install guide issue not yours ) but overall. This is good, well done.
Thanks for the comment. I did mention in the video about possibly an issue with the lack of solar panels. We only open and close our gate twice per day but I still feel I will need to upgrade the panels, especially when we get into some cloudy, winter conditions. I am interested in hearing more about why you believe the actuator will fail? Did yours fail?
That’s only a 50watt motor per their listing. So assuming it’s using the max of 50watts, for a total of 60 seconds per open and close (it’s faster), that means you’re averaging about 1 watt per hour if you were to open it once an hour. You’ve got 640 watts of battery there, which means that you have way more battery than you need, and your solar panel is significantly mismatched for that much battery. You want your panels to be around a minimum of 5% of your battery bank, but 10% is the norm, so for a battery bank that size you would want 60 watts. That’s not because you need that much power for your gate, it’s because your batteries need to reach a certain voltage for proper charging, and theoretically your panel would struggle to do that if the batteries ever had any notable discharge. Basically, this gate could just run two 5-7ah 12v batteries just fine, for a really long time. Just your normal AGM lead acids. They’re sealed and can be laid on their side. Looks like a decent kit, but the panels are kind of a ripoff at $129 bucks. You can just grab a 24v 20-30watt panel for $50 bucks. Really helpful video. Thank you.
Thanks for the in depth comment. You sure seem to know your stuff. Topens sent me the actuator and panels to demo in a video. So that is why I only have 20watts of panels. I believe I mentioned in the end of the video about purchasing 2 12v 100 watt panels and connecting them in series to create 24v. If I was purchasing the kit from scratch, this is what I would do. I believe their system can handle 260 watts of panels. For the batteries, I just figured long term I would get more useable years out of them and I like how they have a wider range of safe operating temps. But I am new to solar, I actually have 7,200 watts of panels, 2 EG4 invertors and 4 EG4 48v batteries on my property now waiting for me to install! So hopefully by the end of that project I will be sharper on my solar skills. Thank you again for the awesome comment!!
@@SalmonCreekLiving Same, thanks for the helpful video. I just ordered this based off your video. We're off grid ourselves, so batteries and panels are something I'm into.
Hopefully I will be off grid by the spring. As for the gate opener, I have had zero issues with it. I think Topens has a good system, especially for the price!
Good job! Thank you
Thank you! And my pleasure!!
I used your video to make my two openers a breeze! Thanks dude 👊
My pleasure. Glad I could help!
Great instructional video. Way more helpfull than the one provided by Topens.
Thank You! I do my best to keep it simple

Great video. I’ll be doing this install in the coming weeks after three failed Might Mules and their horrible customer service.
I love the system so far. No issues at all!

@SalmonCreekLiving no worries brother. I wish you success on your homestead and your channel.
I appreciate it!
I appreciate it!
What brand box is that where you’re storing the batteries in?
I can't remember the exact brand. There is a link in the description though

Anyone know if Topens or Vevor is better for a dual swing gate?
I can’t speak for the dual gate but this one has performed flawlessly for me. I have been very satisfied with the Topens!
Bigfoot!!!
LOL Yes sir, You never know what you might see around my neck of the woods!!!
