I was in Ethiopia for work a couple of months ago, and we ended up having to solder a couple wires back onto a military plug connector in order to not be sent home due to equipment damage reasons and lose the contract. We eventually got it back on, but it took about 6 hours and was extremely stressful. I wish I could have seen this beforehand - I just tested out what you showed here on a similar setup and it took me 5 minutes. Awesome video, thank you!

I bought a $30 soldering iron kit from Amazon. It will not get hot enough to run solder on the small wires. I just bought a more expensive, name brand solder iron hopefully it does its job
You should rather prehead the wire, and hold the solder on the wire. It will melt and suck up the the solder when the right temperature is reached. If you add the solder to the soldering iron, you can hang balls of solder on wires without making a good Connection. If you like to upgrade your Soldering Iron, try one fom Ersa. They have a ceramic heat element that heats up to 400°C in a few seconds. You can dial in your temperature. I bought an RDS80 for one paticular reason. The grip is closer to the tip. It's working similiar to handling a pen. If you grip a pen all the way at the end you have less control. A tiny movement at the back becomes a bigger one at the front. Use some heat resistant rubber on the crocodile Clips, they'll mess up the insulation on small wires.

Thanks for this. I had some really small (maybe 22awg) wire on one of the fans on my 3d printer break and I've been avoiding fixing it for too long. I know how to solder large stuff but not really small wires and most videos are for larger wires and involve twisting the wires together before soldering which is really difficult to do with small wires.
when stripping really small wires a quick easy trick I learned doing low voltage. use a light hear up the insulation. pull heat away grab wire and pull off insulation
A very helpful video but hoped you would give advice on insulating the wire after the pieces are soldered together. The wires I am needing to solder will lay across a circuit board and I am concerned about shorting out something.
I got 0.6mm wire, the thinnest wire I’ve ever had, to solder onto a resistor and 1.5mm LED for my OO scale building. I’ve never used my new soldering iron yet. I’m more concerned about stripping the wires than the soldering. I think I may try melting the insulation off the wires instead of cutting it off.
If you do, your tip will end-up as filthy as his. Just grab it in a pair of wire strippers. If you don't have the correct gauge strippers, get them. In a pinch - teeth work for tiny thin insulation though. ;)

my soldering iron goes up to 450. but it takes 1 minute to melt any solder. when it finally melts it just turns into a ball and falls on the table and wont soak into the wires? what am i doing wrong? wrong solder or is my soldering iron just bad? I've soldered in the past n that never once happened its on the highest heat setting and if i turn it down it still happens and the solders look messy and bad took me an hour to solder 5 small wires

my solder rolls off my iron tip and my wires like water off a duck's back and just lands on the table in a nice little drop. what can I do to get it to stick to the wires? I don't have flux, but I have rosin.
Acid core solder works the best. The right soldering iron with the appropriate heat setting. The gold container in the video has a metal mesh that cleans the tip of the iron. Apply the solder to the tip and it should coat the tip. Apply a drop of solder then hold the tip to the wire The solder should transfer to the wire apply a little more solder as needed to soak in the wires That should do it. Keep cleaning the tip in the mesh for the best success. Try this and let me know. American s Acid core solder not Chinese please.
@@DickGibson Thanks. Well, I tried sticking the solder higher up along the side of the tip since it rolls off the tip, and it stuck there, so I was able to complete my project. Thanks so much! (oh, and I made some flux with resin dissolved in a little rubbing alcohol and a few drops of glycerin (saw diff. video on youtube about that) and that seemed to help a tiny bit. not much, but hey, project was a success. Salvaged old philips mini computer speaker.
Got a question. Doing this for the first time. Our washing machine we were told needed a $500+ repair. It has only done 700 loads of laundry but out of warranty. I pulled the controller board out to find a fuse burned out on it. I am not sure if I should put a slow-blow or fast acting fuse in it. Can anyone give me advice on this? THANKS!
What to do if the wires don't accept the solder? Like the solder just behaves like water and oil.... I can build a huge drop which I put on both wires, and it doesn't connect :(((
Good solder not Chinese! Flux/rosin core A good soldering iron Tip clean and tinned with new solder Tip the proper temperature Above all-good quality wire!!!!! If t wire is not shinny it won’t take solder You might need to get some rosin in a tube or tin and add a small amount to each wire first One or more of these tips should help

@@firefox5926 As far as I know you can't solder aluminum wire. Soldering successfully requires flux to make it adhere to the metal, the correct amount of heat, the correct solder and a good iron.

Got the job done well but you don't need a good soldering gun or good wire. If the techniques right it'll be just fine. I love this country but too many people think that you need high-tech or name brand equipment to do the job. You don't you just have to have good technique
This is just a simulation For real you would find the appropriate size heat shrink and put on the wire away from the solder joint then when cool slide it over and use the appropriate heat source to shrink the material, then you are completely insulated and stronger.
Reminder: Put your soldering iron down if you are not going to immediately solder. I burned my hand cause I went to adjust the soldering temperature forgetting the same hand was holding a hot burning soldering iron.
Really shoulda flux’d that joint before soldering the final connection. It will make sure there is no oxidation present at the joint and it will ensure it’s strength. What he did will work, but it’s not ideal.
forget the lotion these wires are thick as hell... try soldering monitor wires for 4k uhd monitors... burnt insulation off once w/ blow torch corroded wires so much so that not even flux would bond the solder to wires!

Search the interwebs for "Western Union Solder Joint" (or [...] Splice aka "a Linesman Splice") Solder is not a mechanical relief. Just completely wrong. The long-tie variation of the Western Union is preferred for solder flow, but I just make short-ties because there's less chance of wire breakage from flex long-term (and it needs less heat shrink) And his tip is filthy. And the heat is set WAY TO high. And that's an "iron" or a "pencil", a "soldering gun" is a heavier device that is shaped like a gun and is much higher wattage. The iron or pencil is correct for this application. If you were trying to join multi-aught gauge wire, though, you'd want a gun instead of an iron. (I'd accuse him of sucking too many lead fumes - but I've been soldering as an avocation as well as vocationally for like 40+ years - although these days my rework stations have smoke absorbers which keep it out of the air)

I find that using the soldering iron to "cut" the sheath then pulling the rest away, works really well for smaller wire.

I found a good way I have been using to strip a wire since I don't have a stripper is to just use a lighter

Way too much heat try 300c, and your joints could use flux before joining them as they look weak. Apply solder directly to the wires and not the iron.

Just use a lighter to burn the insulation off. It Won’t damage the wire.
