  • I was interested in buying the Warehouse Guitar Speaker (WGS) Invader 50, but found that there were very few reviews or sound clips of this speaker available online. So, I decided to post one, after I bought the speaker. The sound clips were all recorded on a Boss BR 1600, with a little reverb added to all tracks, post recording. I used a Telecaster, with a Duncan 59 (Alnico 2) in the bridge, and DiMarzio Area T Neck pickup. The Amp is a JCA 22H Head, with the matching JCA12S+ cabinet - semi-open back. Mic was a Shure SM57. EQ and Volume setting on the amp are the same for all speakers. Sound clip volume levels were normalized for consistent levels in the video. The first 3 audio clips for each speaker are using the bridge pickup. 4th and 5th sound clips are bridge + neck, and final audio clip is bridge. Pictures are stock pictures and not the actual speaker used for recording.
    Sorry for the lack of clean or high gain clips.
    Let me know which one you like best.

    This is a very well done comparison vid! You can really hear the differences in the speakers. Thank you for using riffs that we are all familiar with as well, I found that to be helpful. It's strange how I liked some speakers on some riffs but not on others. I also thought the speakers had less low end than I have experienced, but that is likely because I use closed back cabs. Overall I liked the Invader 50 the most. Thanks for putting in the effort on this!

      The Invader is a great speaker. Sounds Very close to a 1970 Greenback- way closer than the Greenback that Celestion makes today. In fact, the Green Beret sounds closer than today’s Greenback.

    Great comparison. I’ve been watching this video for years😁😁 . You know once in a while watch it again… Very nicely done. I’ve tried all those speakers and currently use four of them in my studio every day. I have two Laney 212 birch cabs; the close back blue ones from the Lionheart series. One of them has a Reaper Hp and an Invader and the other an Et65 and Invader. Either of them can do from fenderish cleans to metal and everything in between beautifully. I went thru all Wgs lineup and a few celestions including V30’s and G12H aniversary. Anong all celestions I tried I kept the Creamback G12H which is very similar tonewise to the Invader. I’ve learned that some speakers just require different amp sittings. I say this because I love the et65 and et90 which I also own but for some reasons, maybe eq, maybe the cab, it didn’t sound very good to me on this comparison. All other speakers in the video sound to me as I expect according to my experience. Well, thank you.

    Invader 50 was definitely spot on w/ Zeppelin/Heartbreaker, and surprisingly good, real good w/ all other sounds/riffs. I've always loved Celestion, especially the CREAMback's, INVADER 50 has me thinking though.

    • @adamwatson6916
      @adamwatson6916 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds closest to the studio tone for heartbreker but pages tone live was different every tour and every one of those speakers represents his live tone at different points.
      I would have liked to have heard he 30 watt reaper 75 hz and the reaper 55 hz as they are closer in spec to the speakers page was using. His cabs had the G12H30 55hz Speakers so the Reaper 55hz and the celestion 55hz H30 heritage would be cool to compare to see how close they get pages live tone at various points . Page had his bass turned down quite low so to 75 hz G1230 can work quite well for live page tone . The G12H30 anniversary works well for post zeppelin page but doesn't do his vintage tone as well as the heritage 75 hz H30. Those speakers have the same specs but use different materials and are Eqd different . I have all 3 celestion G13H30 variants the 55hz and 75hz heritage H30s and the anniversary
      The invader and the Reaper remind me of Pages brighter cleaner live town from 73 and 75 while rhe creanback M65 and the ET65 remind me more of his fatter warmer and more mud range heavy live tone from 70 and 71.

      Yes. I love the WGS speakers. For the tone I was going for in this test, I preferred the Invader 50 and Celestion G12H30,. The Reaper HP doesn’t break up as early as the G12H30, but I’d be willing to bet that the regular Reaper would sound as good if not better. The HP and G12H sounded so close here.

      Hey Pete what do you think is the best wgs speaker to pair with the reaper? Have you also tried a veteran ? I have a 2x12 with a reaper and a retro but I don’t think this combination is ideal so I’d like to hear what you think.

    • @GernBlanston
      @GernBlanston  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dattoboy1 I would recommend the Green Beret or Invader. I have also done Vet 30 and Reaper. A lot of people like the latter. It was a little too harsh for me, but may be good for high gain. For more classic rock, I'd go with Reaper + Green Beret. Check out Leon Todd's video on that combination.

      Overall, I’m not a big fan of mixing speakers, but there are some nice combinations that do work. I’ve never mixed the Invader with a Reaper HP, but that may not be a bad combination, as the Reaper HP will add a little more low end and top end where the Invader may lack a bit. This video helped me rule *out* the ET65 -- it seems boxy and a little too much scooping of maybe "low-mids". The Invader and G12M65 both sounded spectacular in different ways from one another. The Reaper HP I don't like, a little too bright/harsh. The G12H30 was just fine, though not really having the kind of tonal "mojo" that the first two speakers had. Thanks for the shootout.

    • @GernBlanston
      @GernBlanston  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me, the ET65 has it's place. I think it sounds spectacular when paired with a plexi style amp and playing edge of breakup AC/DC type tones.

  • @joeytruelove
    @joeytruelove 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Funny that some find the ET65 muddy here. I listen through Beyedynamic 770s and the ET65 and the G12H30 are the only ones that really track the chord changes meticulously in the presence range. Again I'm reminded why I'm just nuts about WGS, btw: Invaders in my lead cab, Liberators in my rhythm cab.

  • @jjwalker1149
    @jjwalker1149 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks so much for this video. I have a Jet City JCA22H head as well, an interesting enough, I run it at similar settings, if the pic you posted is accurate. Well ballpark at least. For me, that amp has way too much high end treble on the Crunch Channel. I have used a Creamback to help tame it and that seems to work. I have tried an Invader 50 and Greenback, but they don't cut the treble enough. Your Invader 50 sounds much like mine. Your Creamback sounds much like mine. I did not care for the G12H30, but the Reaper surprised me, other than the Creamback and the ET65, it would be the only speaker I would pair with this amp. It had a very interesting sound going on, but for me it didn't quell the high end enough or push the mids strong enough.
    After listening about 10 times over, lol, I would pick the ET65 first with the Creamback as a close second. But that is with the knowledge of what this amp sounds like in real life, and how the Creamback and Invader deviate in the Video (these always sound a little different than in real life), and also what I am shooting for sound wise. (Personal taste).
    Again, awesome comparison, thanks so much :)

    • @GernBlanston
      @GernBlanston  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I really do like this amp but, you need to pair it with the right guitar and speaker. I found that it really sounds phenomenal in an Avatar 212 closed back vintage (blues breaker style) cab, with G12 H30’s or Reaper HPs... particularly with a Tele. I’ve also found it’s a little brighter at 16ohms that at 8 ohms. What was interesting to me was that I actually had to up the presence and treble a tad for this recording, as my usual settings just sounded too dark, when mix’s. Maybe it was just my mic placement?? I agree, though. Some kind of mod to smooth out the treble EQ would really make this amp kick some serious butt!

      Invader is already a hybrid between a Vintage 30 and a pre-rola Greenback.
      Combining it with the Reaper HP can Mae it too aggressive in the upper mids and highs. Reaper HP is more or less like a higher powered clone of the G12H Anniversary.

    Different cab designs can improve on either speaker. I've own many Celestions and WGS. One thing becomes signature after enough demos, Celestions don't have a punchy low end, WGS does. Hit your low E and hear it. Celestions do have a smoother high end, nice beautiful tone, WGS mid to top end has a little more edge, more pronounced, but still smooth enough. IMO.

    The Invader sounds VERY good, but so did the Creamback. The Heritage was a close second, while the ET65 needs to go back to the drawing board in my opinion. For the price and the fact that I have family from Kentucky, I'd chose the Invader over the other three.

  • @heythere6983
    @heythere6983 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s always tough to be objective because what would be called a dark speaker in the m 65 creamback, here compared to the invader it sounds bright. I like the invader here yet that means in real life it would be even darker than the creamback . I guess the real call is what cuts well in a mix and sounds clear. Brighter always cuts but I rather have a warm speaker that cuts. Iv been lookin into the creamback but what I want is a warmer amp that doesn’t have that sizzle distortion it’s kinda hard to say. From videos I feel alnico speakers tend to have less of that sizzle fizz distortion to them. But in general alnico speakers tend to be spiked from what Iv heard so I have no idea . I think I’m just gonna angle cabs away from myself and the crowd, maybe just facing the ceiling and let the sound disperse that way no ones ears have to get shred to pieces by high end sizzle when standing in the “sweet” spot of the amp

    • @GernBlanston
      @GernBlanston  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I really like about the Invader is that it doesn't have all the top end fizz or presence that most other speakers have. I would say the same about the G12H30 and Reaper HP. They are bright speakers, but they do not have a ton of presence, unless you crank the gain. Overall, I would describe the Invader as a cross between a Greenback and a well broken in Vintage30. Many say that it is comparable to the Celestion Lynchback.

    G12H In this setup. I have about a dozen speakers I have demo's for people. Most have enjoyed the creamback 75 most. The jensen jet falcons have also done really well (opinions) over the most number of amps. Usually I find the amp head dictates a lot of what speakers can match with it. Even if you had the perfect speaker for one head, it can sound terrible in another.
    Want to really change your tone, change to a 15 inch speaker. The sound is a lot more complex. I have an EMi 1518 that just has so much detail yet crunches up like none of my 12, or 10s.

    Isn't Reaper HP supposed to be a warm sounding high wattage take on the G12H30?
    Why does it sound more or less similar to the G12H Anniversary which is the brightest G12H type speaker made by Celestion?
    The only difference I hear between them is that the Reaper HP sounds cleaner in the low end and exhibits less break-up, but that might be because of the greater headroom offered by its higher power handling.
    In clean samples they sound indistinguishable from each other because in case of cleans neither exhibit any break-up..

    Invader was the best here, I think. The Celestions were disappointing, but the ET65 and Reaper were my least favorite, EXCEPT for the clean riff (second to the last), where they actually sounded better, I thought. This video was very helpful as I'm thinking of pairing a Creamback 65 and an Invader 50 in a 1936 style cab. After this video, I think that pairing would work well! Any thoughts on that?

    • @GernBlanston
      @GernBlanston  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All are great speakers but, they depend on the cabinet and type of music you are playing. I suspect that the Invader and Creamback 65 might compliment each other very well. In a 1936, I would think they would be perfect 80's rock/metal. I have 2 invaders in an oversized 212 (Marshall Bluesbreaker style) closed back, and they sound amazing - everything from classic rock to AC/DC and 80's metal. Maybe I'll throw a Creamback in place of one of the Invaders and give it a shot too!

    They actually sound so close....one could make the same adjustment with an eq
    WHAT does the So & so Hz, aka 75hz Bass responce.............can that rating be used to tell how much bass a speaker can handle?? I want a speaker like this but one that can handle some bass put to it, like the Swampthang for example. but..... what should I look for for higher bass handling capabilities? like 80hz bass responce? or even 100hz bass responce?

    • @GernBlanston
      @GernBlanston  ปีที่แล้ว

      I get the idea of wanting a lot of bass, especially if you’re playing high gain metal. It just feels great to cover the full spectrum. The problem is that guitar is a mid-range instrument. If you are at a gig or recording, the sound engineer will need to pull back a lot of that bass out of the guitar in order to make room in the mix for an actual bass guitar. Otherwise, the mix will sound like crap. That said, just about any higher wattage speaker can handle a pretty substantial amount of bass.

    I like smooth speakers and the Invader 50 sounds very interesting. I am not sure if it has too much bottom end though as I play closed 2x12 cabinets. Otherwise I would choose G12M65 Creamback (always loved the Greenbacks, didn't like the G12H75 Creamback) or the G12H30 Anniversary if you have a tube head with a smooth high end

      I actually have 2 Invaders in an oversized, Bluesbreaker style, 2x12 cabinet, and they sound phenomenal. I’ve been wanting to try 2 ET65s in there, but the Invaders sound so good, there’s really no point.

      @@christophergarrido2802 That's a tough call and really depends on your personal preference. The 2x12 Bluesbreaker style cabinet that I mention above is what I use with my Origin 20, but I tend to play with the gain on 6, on the Origin. This gives me a classic 70's rock tone. For clean sounds and a goal of taming the high end, I might actually lean towards the ET65. Either way, you can't go wrong.

      The Invaders are really bright. If using high gain they almost get fizzy with a closed mic. Out in the room they sound great. Mine is brighter than my Reaper HP. I think it would suit you well. I balance my Invader with a Celestion G12K 100 because the Invader doesn’t have enough lows for my taste. The G12K 100 doesn’t have enough highs for me so they complement each other well. I use a 6505+ mainly on the rythem channel. My favorite I have is the Reaper HP. Great with a microphone. I bought the Invader because I watched this video and later the Reaper HP. This video doesn’t capture the Reaper HP in all its glory. It is fabulous!

      Actually, all clips were normalized to the same peak in volume. Not one is louder than the other. What you perceive to be "louder" is simply the different frequencies accentuated by the speakers.

      I actually have them in a 1960 cab, mixed with the Marshall (Celestion) G12 Vintage speakers. I'm thinking of doing a comparison of the Retro 30 and G12 Vintage speakers. The Marshall G12 Vintage (Stock in the 1960 AV/BV cabs) is the original recipe for the Vintage 30, but it's a little brighter in the top end, and has deeper bass than the Vintage 30. It's 70 watts. Interestingly enough, that's how WGS describes the Retro vs the Veteran, and the Retro is 75 watts. Hmmmm.

      They’re EQ’d very similarly. The Retro definitely stood out though. It has a lot more sizzle on top. So, I removed it from the cab. It sounds great on its own, in a MojoTone Canyon 1x12. I would say, the Retro is a much more metal speaker, than blues or classic rock. It would probably work very well if you have a darker amp.

      @@GernBlanston Thanks for the reply. I asked because I have a 2x12 Hayden cab with a retro and a reaper. Seriously considering getting a second 4x12 as well for a different flavour, been looking at the Mojotone Grand Canyon and Zilla Oversized 4x12. How do you find the build quality of Mojotone?
