I’m retired and divorced. When my son and his family graciously asked me to stay with them, I made several two-week visits to see and feel how it is to be living with them. It was the nuances, the intended gestures to hurt your feelings, and their constant reminder that my ways are old and obsolete that brought me pain. So, I live alone peacefully now and without guilt.

Children now when you give them everything you work, save and hardly spend. Gradually when they are married, definitely forget you as a mother. Only they want you to live as a servant with them. They distance you, avoid, no visit, unwelcome, no love and of course unfilial. The hope we dream gone lonelyness, sadness, unhappy, though, misery, pain, as tears and years go bys. The worse pain is having a bad, evil, home breaker dil..! to break, destroy the whole family

It sounds like you made a thoughtful effort to stay with your son and his family, but it’s understandable that the experience was challenging. Living alone peacefully can be a source of comfort and freedom, especially when it means avoiding negativity and feeling respected. It’s important to prioritize your own well-being and happiness, and finding peace on your own terms is a valuable choice.

In India family bond is still very strong. As a custom children naturally take care of parents.Eventhough they cannot stay together due to their job places they video call, visit frequently and have family get-together on festivals.I am retired,74,have good pension,my husband also like that.Children are usually annoyed when they have to support parents financially. There are parents who do not care to save enough money for their old age. That is the problem

I learned it the hard way! Haven’t seen my second son who is a doctor for over 28 years, he started to text me couple of times a year now like new year greeting, he spoke to me 2 times last year, (he has done well for himself traveling, many expensive foreign cars etc, ) but nothing more! I have not seen my older son over 2.5 years and we live in the same city!!!! I can only depend on myself! Having children is overrated in my case and with many others in their old age as well! Health is the only thing we can depend on!! 😢😢😢

Being on a fixed income can be challenging, but it's great that you have Section 8 housing to help. It's also a positive that you have Social Security to support you, given your long career. Even though relationships can be complicated, especially with family, it’s clear that you’ve managed to find ways to survive and adapt. I hope your situation with senior housing improves soon, and you continue finding strength in the resources you have.

His son from his first marriage was able to get alarge amount of money from my brother in law, they mortgage their house to give to the son. Now, the son is ignoring him keeping distance and not talking to him. Now, he's already 84 yrs old, he has no money, he returned to being a brick contractor in Australia and still he and my sister have to pay the mortgage at their old age. I'm really sorry to hear about your brother-in-law's situation. It’s disheartening when family dynamics lead to such outcomes, especially when trust and financial support are involved. The reality is that sometimes, people can act in ways that lead to unintended consequences, and it’s challenging when that impacts loved ones later in life.
It’s a tough reminder of the importance of careful financial planning and the need to protect one’s own interests, especially as we age. Hopefully, your brother-in-law and sister can find a way to navigate their current challenges and gain some relief. If they need support or advice on managing their situation, there might be resources available to help them through this difficult time.

You're right; it's wise not to rely entirely on others, even your own children, for support. Life can be unpredictable, and while it’s wonderful when children are there for their parents, it’s not something that can be guaranteed. By staying independent and preparing for your own future, you're ensuring that you can take care of yourself no matter what. This approach reflects the strength and self-reliance you've built throughout your life. It's always good to be prepared and self-sufficient, just as you’ve been.

It doesn’t sound like this story as, in this story, the woman seemed a good and kind person. But, it is also so, that some children are unfilial, because their parents were not good parents to them. They might’ve been abusive. Plus, when the next generation is doing worse than the previous, it shouldn’t be expected necessarily. You are not born indebted to your parents. You are not cattle to your parents. Caring for them is a gift.

You do not need a large amount of property. You need to own the place you live , have low taxes. Low expenses. Own just one property or 2 it could be a duplex. That rent would or should cover your expenses. It would be the best thing to purchase something like that at a young age. Get it paid off , get everything paid off before retirement. If you get caught unaware at a young age quickly sell off any property you can’t afford. Buy something cheap low taxes. Like a homestead with a small camper or tiny house. Find a few streams of low income. Like selling online or cleaning a house 1 or 2 days a week. Or caring for an older person. Be a sitter or use a still you have to earn money. You need 3-5 small income streams to pay low taxes and maintain something small to live in, buy food and keep insurance. And sure something like raising chickens selling eggs and chickens is an income stream. Or make Jams or candles to sell at a flea market. If you have wood working skills make things. You may not live like everyone else but who wants to live like everyone else. Live differently and rise above your circumstances. It can be done. I did it. Prayer 🙏🏻 helps a lot !

My tip would be this - even if you move - don/t sell your house or houses. Let tenants pay the mortgage & when you retire - you can sell the properties or use the income over & above the payment to live on. It is the easiest retirement fund - keeping any home you buy until you are needing the money the increase in value brings.

As for me, it's still much better to live in countryside rather than in the city, when one is too old for work cuz, in that countryside anyone in his old age could plant vegetables, fruits, raising chickens and hogs even @ least for personal consumptions and daily subsistence! At least in that place you could smell the fresh air, the beauty of greeneries, hear the chirping of the birds, the rustling of leaves and the morning sunlight which could contribute to one's life longevity! Best of all, each of us should anticipate that there will come a time when getting old is a reality and must be pre planned ahead for our remaining years by not being dependent on your children and to others. Another thing is, living in the city is much more expensive in everything is being spent with money unlike in the countryside one can survive with the simplicity of one's daily life with just the availability of what surrounds us with a harvests of fruits, vegetables, raising eggs, chickens, hogs and many more! God Bless everyone who are in this predicament of being in that stage in life! Pray Always, cuz God never abandons anyone in old age.

@@maritessalaba5672 I quite agree about country versus city, although it’s difficult for elderly to garden ground level if raised beds aren’t an option, once in need of a walker or wheelchair. I have also seen that country folk seem to be more community minded towards others, than many city people.
Chickens are good for eggs, goats for milk, rabbits for meat, but carpel tunnel and arthritis make skinning and cleaning a challenge. Hogs are a bit too dangerous, unless a small breed is an option, but sheep are gentle enough, although often sickly…

An old widowed friend of mine lived alone in a farm for years. All her children left to live in overseas. One day she fall and passed out, no one was there for her. Finally one neighbors who lives not far from her, came for a visit. Shocked, she saw her on the kitchen floor. Quickly contacted the police. Ambulance came to take her body. Ended children fighting for her property and money. So sad, no one was there for her !?

In my opinion parents have the responsibility to take care of children like birds they take care of their chicks. Once they started flying on their own the parents must forget and start living their life on their own without expecting for their children to help.
Learn from nature. Do not repent later.

I am ăn adopted child of a lesbian couple in my 50’s and single. I had the best life I could ever have with their sacrifices for me so in return I vowed to look after them until the end of their lives. I made sure no one will even show them that negativity of life. I owed this people my life, it’s just right to give it back. Until now I’m single not because I didn’t want a relationship but because as soon as I see negative things towards that relationship that would hurt my parents in the future I started to stray away. I’ve also seen this story to others that made me think if it is worth having a family? My parents are in their own happy places now and am alone but I know God is there to protect me. I am independent and train myself to be alone. I continue to see families quarrel about finances and keep grudges to each other and makes me thinkI guess I am in a good place. I thank God for guiding me all this times, seeing the reality of life through my experiences and learned how to provide for myself and gifted me with luck and good health.

A very good story for the aging and an eye opener to parents possed with their children. My mother taught me self reliance and 88years old she owns a car pays for her fuel, repairs and insurance plus medical bills and all other needs; with an attitude, if you want to support me, you will you if not I am okay 😢😢 I can servive anyway 💃💃💃

Each situation is different. My 84 yr old mother lives with me. We never had a good relationship, because od her nasty and negative ways. We have been estranged for a long time. My mother has some mental illness. I am the only child. In her eyes, she thinks that she should run the household. We don't ask her anything as far as rent, she lives in our brand new house, in her wheelchair, while she dings up my baseboards. She has absolutely nothing orher than my Dads SS benfits. I am a nurse by trade, and i am very strict with her. There is no way she could live on her own, or go to a nursing home. So.....regardless of what some of you think, eventually, you all are gonna need your families and children.

It sounds that this story is in China. Usually Chinese people look after their old parents. It is custom and culture.
I am also retired, I have good pension incomes and go out every day for food and exercise and socialise.
      So I don't cook much.
I was also told by my daughter-in-law to be that I had to look after their baby. I said why, what are you going to do? She said - work. Well, It didn't happen. She has not worked for many, many years and the baby is now 14. My son is earns enough. But we had helped them in the past, gave them good money .
She also thought that I should cook and do housework for them. Well, I live in my own house. Husband and I both worked very hard and we have our own house and our own savings.
I give them good money but I am now going to cut down. I am going to spend on travelling and myself.
Yes, they come less and less now. I got the message. This is how they treat you when you are old.
We worked and feed them and privately educated them. This is your reward.
I can relate to the lady in the story.
God bless us all. Be independent. Yuan is Chinese money.

It sounds like you've been through a lot and worked hard to provide for your family despite various challenges. It must be tough to see your son make decisions that differ from what you had hoped for, especially after all you've done for him and your family.
It's important to recognize the strength and dedication you've shown in providing for your children and creating a home. Even though your children have chosen different paths, it doesn't diminish the love and effort you've put into raising them.
As you navigate this phase of your life, focusing on your well-being and finding fulfillment in your own journey is crucial. If you’re feeling isolated or struggling with these changes, reaching out for support from friends, community groups, or professional counselors can be beneficial. Your resilience and dedication are admirable, and finding ways to care for yourself and build new connections can help you move forward positively.

There are some financial advisors lately advising couples and parents to first pay off high interest debts, build emergency funds, get a life insurance policy, set up retirement plans & start savings and investing early. Setting up a college fund for your kids should come last because they might either decide not to go to college also alternatively, they can sign up for financial aid assistance being loans, grants & scholarships to fund their education. It makes sense since higher living costs means that your kids may not be financially secure by the time you approach retirement.

    • @BuddhaZenWishdom
      @BuddhaZenWishdom  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That’s a solid approach. Financial advisors often recommend focusing on high-interest debts and building an emergency fund first because these steps provide immediate relief and create a stronger financial foundation. Here’s a breakdown of why this strategy makes sense:
      1. Paying off high-interest debts: High-interest debt, like credit card balances, can accumulate quickly and become a significant financial burden. Eliminating these debts reduces financial stress and frees up more money for savings and investments.
      2. Building emergency funds: An emergency fund acts as a safety net for unexpected expenses, such as medical emergencies or car repairs. Having this fund in place helps prevent the need to take on additional debt when crises arise.
      3. Life insurance and retirement plans: Securing life insurance ensures that your dependents are financially protected if something happens to you. Retirement plans and savings are crucial for ensuring you have enough funds to maintain your lifestyle in your later years.
      4. Investing early: Investing early can leverage the power of compound interest, allowing your money to grow over time. This is especially important for long-term financial goals.
      5. College funds: While supporting your children’s education is important, it often makes sense to prioritize your own financial security first. College costs can be managed through financial aid, scholarships, and loans, which can help reduce the financial burden on parents.
By focusing on these priorities, you’re setting up a stable financial future for yourself, which can ultimately benefit your family as well. It’s a balanced approach that ensures you’re prepared for both immediate needs and long-term goals.

Where I live many of the older people in rural areas work extremely hard and live frugal lives to leave as much as they can to their children who live in the towns and cities. Frequently, the first thing the children do on the death of their parents is sell their parents' property to buy flashy new cars and be extravagant. I have seen this on several occasions.

That's such a heartbreaking reality, and it happens more often than we think. Many parents sacrifice so much for their children, only to see their hard-earned assets quickly spent. It's why stories like Aunt Fang’s are so important-they remind us of the need for balance and self-reliance, even in old age. Providing for your children is natural, but ensuring your own security and well-being should come first. It’s about finding that strength to care for yourself while still offering support when you can
