      There was a 1867 film titled "Hombre." Starred Paul Newman, Richard Boone and other luminary.
      The set was an actual group of old mining buildings out in some dusty water deprived hills.
      Well I've read souvenir hunters descended on the site like horde of rapacious vultures. Not a stick or any proof of that film site remains. Oh well that's the way things are.

    It was around 1965 when my family got our first tv. I loved all the old westerns that were on the few channels we got. As a little boy I was involved in the shooing of many a bad guy in the streets of my imaginary towns. I rode fast and hard to take on anyone who challenged my fast draw. How fast those innocent days fly by. Gunsmoke was definitely one if not the greatest. TV today cannot compare.

  • @MotorsbyShooter

    When I was there several years ago, the owner of the property drove by as we were looking at everything from the edge of the road. He asked us if we would like to go in and we said yes. He told us that his Father owned the property back in the day and that he was a little kid, but he said he remember them filming some Gunsmoke series there as well as a lot of other western films for TV and movies. Anyone who has been to Dodge City, Kansas will know right off that the TV version of Dodge City on Gunsmoke is BS. There are no mountains, high hills or lower rolling hills anywhere. You can put a basket ball on the ground and the only way it is going to move is from the wind blowing it.

    • @scvandy3129
      @scvandy3129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinparker2068 Very good, "Kevin Parker." While Melody Ranch in Santa Clarita performed admirably for exteriors, the marshal's office, Long Branch, Doc's office and other interiors were filmed in Hollywood at a minimum of two different studios, California Studios (currently Raleigh) and Paramount Sunset (currently KTLA). In the early 1960s an interior 'exterior' Dodge City street was constructed on two adjoining stages. Regular and sporadic viewers will attest it looked quite phony. That Aug. 1962 fire at Gene Autry's Melody facility, with production for the eighth season well underway, was a game changer. Interestingly, establishing 'stock' shots of that ranch's "Gunsmoke" street continued to be inserted into new episodes' footage.
      3:43 - 3:47 Shows the 1963 regular cast standing on one of the exterior western streets at newly named, CBS Studio Center, the decades' long, historic Republic Studios lot in Studio City, Calif. that had been leasing stages to Four Star Productions since the mid 1950s. CBS had a lease agreement too; that is until four years later when the network bought the facility outright.
      With the lease agreement in 1963, that May the facades from the indoor 'exterior street' at Paramount Sunset were trucked from Hollywood to Studio City and reassembled on one of the stages there, becoming "Gunsmoke"'s new home. For the next 12 seasons the show used a combination of both the interior street on stage and the standing, exterior one to replicate Dodge City.

      Island in the Desert? S:20 E:11

    • @scvandy3129
      @scvandy3129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh, was that good, 'Island in the Desert.' Guest star Strother Martin, as 'desert rat' Ben Snow nearly 'steals the show' from the very capable regular Ken Curtis as Festus. Perennial 'bad guy' William Watson is just as mean and ornery as ever. Really. But Ben Snow has a friend 'Homer' to look after himself and his gold. FYI, one won't find 'Homer' in the episode's cast list, so if you haven't seen it you'll just have to discover for yourself what tricks Ben Snow has up his sleeve. "You don't miss a trick, do you?" says Festus. "Only reason I'm alive," answers Snow.
      In addition to the excellent teleplay by staffer Jim Byrnes, who created some especially effective scenes for Martin and Curtis to play off each other, the background music adds considerably. I found myself humming portions of it for days after seeing it.
      Speaking of scenes, the expense the company spent to travel from "Gunsmoke"'s Studio City, Calif. base to film in Utah was worth every penny. Remote, desolate locations near Kanab, this town set being one of them -- portraying Ben Snow's destination, Ten Strike.

    • @scvandy3129
      @scvandy3129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wm Conrad was the CBS Radio Network "Gunsmoke"'s Dodge City U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon. Had a 9-year run, 1952 - 61, so interestingly, a good part of its run coincided with the 20-year long CBS Television Network version that debuted in 1955.
      You are correct -- Arness was the actor in the TV version. You are incorrect in his peace officer position's spelling, i.e., marshal, not marshall.
      I'm so glad I accumulated the entire DVD set over the years; a good investment. Hope you continue to watch and enjoy, "Jimmy Fale."

Kanab was also the filming location for the Outlaw Josey Wales, which is further down Hwy 89 towards Page.....You have to drive down another long dirt road, and then, there are no structures, just the general location... When you watch movies nowadays, we do occasionally notice shots that look like they were shot in the area, but those are few, and far between.

Dont put to much weight on something that was literally just a family video...We never had any dreams that this many people would have watched it up to this point. At the time, it was a cute little video I threw together to share with a few family and friends...To see this many people have watched it....We're just as shocked as anyone. I HIGHLY recommend anyone who is within the area to go out and visit Kanab, UT, as there are so many more things to see and enjoy than just this particular Hollywood stage set. Western movies and TV shows were really prevalent in this area during its heyday, and this is one of many sights I suggest everyone go out and check on their own

      When your driving up Johnson Canyon Road, it will be about 15 minutes in, and on your RIGHT hand side. Also along this road, is another lesser known point of interest, a cave where it was believed to store Montezuma's treasure, which was a very interesting story of Kanab in the early 1900's
