That envelope of ephemera with the release party flyer reminds me of how massive this series was. The timing of the first comic hit at the perfect monoculture moment of the mid aughts when O'Malley's art inspired by Takahashi and Tezuka was so different, striking, and appealing than every other comic at that time. The production, design, and effort that went into this really make it worth that expensive price. I think a lot of people forget how expensive these boutique boxsets are, ShAkira was $220, the Zapp set was $750, the Love and Rockets set was $250, all the Crepax boxes are $150, the hardcover Calvin and Hobbes set is $225, and all those boxsets Marvel was doing for a few years were around $500.
@@MrThebatman18 Organic Priced Books has it for $185 and Thriftbooks has it for $156. Sadly not as good as the Amazon deal from a few months ago that $137 but it's still between $65 to $93 off MSRP.
I LOVE THIS COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF BOTH SCOTT PILGRIM'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY HARDCOVER BOX SETS - COLOR AND BLACK & WHITE!!!!!! I decided on buying the color box set, so THANK YOU, Omar, for this AWESOME video!!!!!!
Thank you for doing this! I've been wanting to see this overview for a while. I own the 2012 hardcovers so I was curious to see how different the new set is from those editions. The answer seems to be... not that different. The books have new covers, but seem to be the same size as the 2012 hardcovers. The 2012 hardcovers had the extras in the back of each book instead of in a separate book, but the actual extras themselves seem very similar to the extras in the 2012 hardcovers too. So unless I decide I really really want a nifty-looking box (or some stickers), I can probably be satisfied with the 2012 hardcovers I already have...
I love the Scott Pilgrim series! I was obsessively waiting for every volume counting the days until it would drop. I still own the original volumes, but also bought the color editions and even the Oni Press exclusive Evil Ex editions. While I prefer the graphic novels by far, the movie was solid, translating the video game aesthetic and the epic fights perfectly. I was already planning on getting the black and white box set, as it was the version I originally read (plus the fact I was never in love with the colors), and the look of the b&w books just sealed the deal.
@lenonel3286 Here's where my whole story gets unraveled! I haven't seen it, unfortunately I don't have a Netflix account. I am curious, but I didn't love the pitch of the story, as I'd much rather see a faithful adaptation of the books.
Also, I was reading this in my college years. It was nuts starting it colelge, then finishing it and after college. This was a time machine in my life.
Great overview as always Omar. Never read Scott Pilgrim but from what you described about the story it sounds very relateable.😁 I'm in my 30s and I still don't know what to do with my life.😂 Life is complicated and frustrating. I feel conflicted. I feel like on one hand glad I've helped others(like my mom with ms) but let myself down in other ways like no career etc...... Still I always like to hear how your perspective has changed as you gotten older.🙂
I still have my original black and white paperbacks so I'll grab the colour version for the sake of variety. Also just want a really nice edition. Really glad i never got round to grabbing the deluxe hardcovers😅
Great review! I too think of scott pilgrim the same way, eatting ramen 🍜 hanging out with friends, the adventures as a late teen. Good times. I would love to pick up both but I don't think I can drop that sort of money even for loving scott pilgrim so much 😅😢
There was a significant size difference between the older black and white TPs and the colored hardcover editions . I was wondering how these newer versions compared in size to those . To my eye, these newer ones looks like the same size of the previous colored hardcover.
I would have liked a comparison with the previous HC collection in color that ONI released before. 6 individual colore HC volumes with different covers. Anybody can find a comparison.
I preordered the 20th anniversary colour edition a few months ago and when I did I decided to get an old cheaper version of the black and white edition from 2011 (Scott Pilgrims Precious Little Boxset). Since I really like both but I wasn’t going to pay $600+ for the same story.
I do love how these look, but considering the price and the fact that I have the series in black and white paperback, the hardcover color editions, and the omnibus box set… I feel like I’m content with passing up on this box set, especially that price… yikes.
Personally B&W for me because it’s how the book was intended to be but I can totally understand why people get colour maybe because their eyes lose attention without bright colours or also because this box is so expensive you’d want the ‘modern’ version
I'm personally collecting the original B&W Softcovers and while this is nice, $250 is way too expensive and the only new thing is the collected extras.
Great, thorough review. I have two questions: 1. Maybe I missed it but does the B&W edition have a sewn binding as well? 2. How does the color version compare to the soft cover box set release a few years ago? I’m debating getting the B&W version of this since I have that color version Thanks
The Netflix show works secretly very well as a (quite sad) sequel to the comics. It's a strange natural progression. Wow, it's really new and weird for me to hear you talking about Scott Pilgrim, Omar. Glad you like the books!
tbh im pretty disappointed with this if it was like 70 or 80 sure, but 250 is far too much plus the cover art is such a large downgrade from the originals and you can basically get all the content by just purchasing the color versions for less money than you would buying this

I love scott pilgrim, but 250 dollars is ridiculous imo
Agree
sure is
If it’s any consolation, multiple online retailers have it around $100 cheaper than MSRP.
@@Artistjm I haven't seen any for 150 or less. Feel free to link the sites you found it on for all of us

I wish the extras came with a patch, and some pins, over just some fliers that are folded up and the stickers. But otherwise the sets look very nice.
I loved this series so much when I read it back in school

I've never read the series, but now I want to check out the black and white version.
Black & White was how it was intended to be read 😁👍
It's absolutely worth reading
As someone who started with the BW, and read it as it was releasing, the color version is better in every way.
It’s been preordered for a bit and I can’t wait!

This is the first time you've convinced me to go with b&w instead of color lol
Cant watch the whole video, why would you go for the black n white instead of the colored on?

What'd you think of the netflix show?

Really comprehensive, thanks a lot

Price is too high for me to go in blind as someone who isn’t familiar with the comic nor the movie. Might check it out if it’s half the price
It's 40% off already
@@thebmxreviewer not in my country
Definitely don’t, yeah. Better to get the older Black and white paperback set. Or the color versions if you want to be fancy, but more expensive.
Loved this series when it came out and these box sets look amazing. Wish i could get the colored one.

I couldn't agree more with Omar on summing up the Scott Pilgrim books.

Excited for this, but still on the fence. I kind of wish the 250 was for both, but this comic is worth it.
This is insanely expensive for what you get.
Ya $335 Canadian. I’m going to have keep an eye out if it goes on sale.
I have the previous colored Hardcovers so it's a skip for me but I recommend this series to anyone who doesn't already own it.
Also, Cheap Graphic Novels have the Black & White version. They say they are sold ou of the Color.
I didn’t need further convincing to but this; I’ve been scoping it for several months. But thank you anyways 😂
what is the better way to read this color edition or black & white edition?????
I've never own these and now I need to decide which one I want. Color or B&W.
Get color
Personally B&W for me because it’s how the book was intended to be but I can totally understand why people get colour maybe because their eyes lose attention without bright colours or also because this box is so expensive you’d want the ‘modern’ version
Yeah im just gonna get the 2012 hcs
I'm personally collecting the original B&W Softcovers and while this is nice, $250 is way too expensive and the only new thing is the collected extras.
I have the coloured HCs already. I can’t justify double dipping at this price for the few extras, unfortunately.
Great, thorough review. I have two questions:
1. Maybe I missed it but does the B&W edition have a sewn binding as well?
2. How does the color version compare to the soft cover box set release a few years ago? I’m debating getting the B&W version of this since I have that color version

Super cool
It's a special edition/collectors item. Price is justified.
As someone that loves the movie, I thought I would blind buy but this price is just too much...
I love how they're like the Akira box set. B&w or color? I can't decide.
Color
Color
O’Malley not Oh Miley
So the only way to gey the collected extras is getting the box?
Sadly yes atm but I might get the box set and upload the extra for free 👹 can’t sue me if you don’t know who I am 🎉🎉🎉
Vincent how could you? Return Omar his Scott pilgrim books
These are very nice, but quite expensive! Is this edition larger than the previous color edition hardcovers?
No. They're the same size.
The price for this is absolutely insane for having the extras just be some paper
I remember the overhyped it when it came out making the extras sound like they were pins and stuff
And "the secret items from the Scott pilgrim world"?
The Netflix show works secretly very well as a (quite sad) sequel to the comics. It's a strange natural progression. Wow, it's really new and weird for me to hear you talking about Scott Pilgrim, Omar. Glad you like the books!
I NEEEEEED IT 🤧
Not omnibus editions though
I mean Omnibus editions for this would just be 2 big volumes.
The price is tooo high :.( but I think it’s beautiful
tbh im pretty disappointed with this
if it was like 70 or 80 sure, but 250 is far too much
