@Wally-H Yes, you're absolutely right - but we in the lower leagues train(ed) like this, too. First, the "counter" or "counterhit" forh./backh., than "topspin" against "block" as seen in the video, f./b., sometimes "flipballs" (in some TH-cam vid's falsely called "flicks"), which are 'openers' for topspin - smash - attacks ; often trained as/combined with 1a.short serve 1.short backspin - "push" 2."flipball" frh./bckh.! Theres even one advantage in many clubs where people play in lower leagues: there are at least two or three players, specialized in "chop defense" - and, 🥵, pulling a topspin against an incoming chop with a backspin - rotation rate of about 1500 r/pm is much more "fun" than topsing neutral blocks... Among top players, there are very few who choose this system - combining a very "slow" wood with extremely sticky but controlled rubbers... Reasonable players take at least 1 D-type (➕️speed,➖️ spin), to attack with a (for defense) relatively fast topspin whenever possible - not me. With this stickiest rubber on the market during the 1980's to ~'92, my topspins were as slow as the chops, but turned into "smashers" after touching the table - or bananas when spiced with sidespin... USATT 2000 level players can do this, what he is demonstrating is not very difficult for trained players. When he kicks it up a gear then that becomes mind blowing, even for 2400+. The ball and the modern game is just much faster and equipment is much more advanced. With old ball and equipment opponents literally were unable to counter ma longs forehand, they could barely manage to block it. Now, ma longs forehand is only slightly above the average professionals forehand, and most are able to counter it very effectively (lin gaoyuan comes to mind) his forehand is forced to become much more short and compact when the ball comes back so fast.
