  • How to Make a Simple Bird Feeder
A bird house can attract one or two birds, but a bird feeder will attract a variety of them. So for this project, I again use only one cedar fence picket to build a simple bird feeder. And with this step-by-step process you should be able to decorate your yard with your own custom feeder.

Birds such as Cardinals and Blue Jays will need a larger area in which to stand. I suggest extending the trough out further, Additionally cut an old bicycle inner tube and tack a piece across the hinge area to keep water from leaking through the roof and ruining the feed,

PERFECT project for a beginner, or to make with a child or grandchild, and it can be painted and decorated in all kinds of colors. The only limit is the imagination, as long as oil, paint, etc. is "food-safe" aka: wouldn't poison the food!!
And remember; always have clean water (and container!) for the animals to drink, and sometimes also take a bath. :D

This is a neat project, im getting ready to try it out with some cedar pickets. they were only $3 each at menards vs $25 ea. for the same size (a little nicer) cedar dimensional lumber boards. I was also looking at their bird feeders, and got an idea to add a suet basket on the side like their more expensive feeders have. I might try adding one to it,, not sure yet or not though. I might make my base 10" long to give them a larger perch too. Will see how much material I have left first though. Thanks for the excellent video!!

I wear one of these instead of my nice wedding ring when I go to work, or when working on things like this, or metalworking, so that my finger doesn't get torn off or the skin peeled off if it gets caught. When I'm not working I wear the real one. The silicone rings only cost about $15-25

    • @pershop4950

I don't have every tool from these many wood projects either but a reciprocating saw, jigsaw, and circular saw have kept me active in making a lot of wood projects. You can forgo a jigsaw but you just won't be able to make some curved cuts . However, it just means, make your cuts more straight and it probably is OK too!

You can use a protractor to get the angles. Eg, a protractor can easily give you the 20-degree angle to cut with.
Although the video said that glue was sufficient, but IMO, the tool used in this video that helps more than all the different kinds of saws, is the brad nailer. You can make this project with a hand saw, slower but still possible.
But the brad nailer is very useful for doing some small nails into these pieces of wood. Yes, it can be done with nail and hammer also but you would need more balancing and just more care to not bust up a particular side of the feeder.
