    Fun fact: Wojtek (pronounced Voytek) was a brown bear bought, as a young cub, by Polish II Corps soldiers who had been evacuated from the Soviet Union. In order to provide for his rations and transportation, he was eventually enlisted officially as a soldier with the rank of private, and was subsequently promoted to corporal. Wojtek helped move crates of ammunition during the battles.

  • @ChrisHeinking
    @ChrisHeinking ปีที่แล้ว +103

    One thing that you didn't really take into account is whether or not they could fly. I feel like flying is a big bonus in combat. Ranged attacks are also a big bonus. The dragon could fly and rain fire down on their enemies with their only threat really being other flying creatures or ranged attacks. I think it would outweigh their upkeep cost since both the Roc and the Bear would be in danger of melee weapons, while the Dragon wouldn't be.

    • @williamklemp3764

    • @Fuchs186
      @Fuchs186 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, tactical use of the critters is left out in this vid, and the dragons does have the most advantages here. Though i think you underestimate how much damage a gigantic bear could take from medieval tiny enemies. Most arrows and spears wouldn't have the tip to get through all the fur, thick skin and fat, they would need special weapons to take down the bear or dragon, although the wings of both the Roc and Dragon would be a big vulnerable target...

    • @themarinefan

    • @ChrisHeinking
      @ChrisHeinking ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@williamklemp3764 Unless the Roc has its own ranged attacks, then it would have to fly into melee to be able to attack anything. Yeah, it could stay outside of melee, but then it wouldn't actually be doing anything to help in battle. The Dragon, on the other hand, has fire breath, which could be used to attack targets without getting close enough for the enemy to attack them with melee weapons

    The thing with a rate at which birds lay eggs isn't just about the size of the bird, but prevalence of predators also plays a factor. Case in point: The Dodo. According to a podcast I listened to recently, because there were no predators to them before European explorers showed up, they only laid one egg per year. When the explorers showed up and their dogs and other animals decided those eggs were tasty, those birds went the way of the... well, you know.
    Anyways, I can't imagine the roc having to worry much about any predators, so I imagine their egg laying rate would be even lower than you anticipate. Perhaps as few as one every two or three years. And this is in addition to a likely long period from hatchling to able to produce its own offspring.

    About training a bear: there has been at leat one case where a adult bear was trained without the classic fear method. I would say the food consumption section might be a bit off, as animals typically have a lower metabolic rate by comparison to their size as the body is required to be more efficient. Like how a lot of marine animals in the abyssopelagic and hadal zones are massive creatures that only need to eat a small amount each month to survive(though not that active), or other large mammals like whales/dolphins(which are more active).

    MatPat, dragons are widely considered (for a mythology creature, anyway) to be endothermic, not ectothermic. While some may fare worse in colder environments (as is the case with all endothermic life), some (especially ones based on fire abilities be it breathing fire or magic etc) are plenty capable of whitstanding the coldest environments that humans can survive in.

    I'd give the dragon a field point as well. Dragons, usually, breath fire by igniting gas from within. It's logical to think they can use this to warm up in cold climate. Also, although a dragon IS a lizard, it's warm (maybe hot) blooded one' i mean, you don't get to breath fire without being veeeery hot all inside your body.

    • @mentaya11
      @mentaya11 ปีที่แล้ว

      That isn't what is meant by being warm blooded. Warm-blooded (endothermic) animals are those, like mammals and birds, that produce their own body heat through their metabolism. Cold-blooded animals (ectothermic) require outside sources of heat, like basking, to regulate their body temperature. You are correct though that a lizard that could breath fire could likely regulate their body temperature by warming up next to a fire they generated with their breath. An ectothermic dragon could still likely do that.

    Cool theory but one issue I have is with the pixel measurements when you didn’t account for the fact that the dragon is a fair distance away from the heroes and is therefore much larger than it appears, so your calculations were likely off due to that fact

    Major Error 1: You compared the dragon (lizard) to a t-rex despite the fact that Birds are much closer to the T-rex than lizards.
    Major Error 2: When doing the pixel measurement on the dragon you failed to account for distance, that dragon should be around 1.5x bigger.

    Big stretch to say that a creature that breathes fire would be cold-blooded.

    • @mentaya11
      @mentaya11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why? Cold blooded has nothing to do with the temperature of the blood. Cold-blooded animals, or ectotherms, are unable to produce internal body heat, and must find outside sources of heat to keep warm. This leads to some reptiles basking on rocks to soak up the suns' rays. Endotherms, warm-blooded animals, like humans, can produce their own heat through metabolizing their food. This requires a larger food intake to regulate their body temperature when they are in cold environs. But if you were to measure the body temperature of the animal, the cold-blooded animal would have a similar temperature to the outside weather, which can be quite hot. The breathing of fire seems, at least to me, to have little to do with it. In fact, a fire-breathing ectotherm might be able to gain body heat by creating a fire to warm itself by. That said most reptiles are ectotherms, while birds and mammals are both endotherms. It's a fairly safe bet to guess a dragon might be ectothermic, though it isn't certain.
