The ghost girls could very well be a reference to the onryo or how, in Japanese mythology, a lot of ghost stories seemed to be based around female ghosts, since they don't seem to be vengeful.
Didn't she used to play with abra on the bridge? Maybe Abra saw Darkrai aproaching and attacked him to protect the girl, making Darkrai feel treathen and attacking him back... He misses cuz the girl was too close to her Abra and stepped in the way... Seems reasonable.
Abra attacked Darkrai...wit Teleport And even if Abra actually had an attacking move, it would probably be psychic type (unless it’s Hidden Power, but I don’t think it can learn that in later generations) and wouldn’t even be able to hit Darkrai...
@@resonatingjas9167 Well it was not like MatPat was putting a bad light on Darkrai. He did say that the nightmares are only for self-defense and made an assumption that it could only done by accident or to foreshadow a possible future event.
I didn't mean that was matpat's intention at all, but I know a lot of people already have a negative stereotypes of the ghost/dark Pokemon in general, but Darkrai especially. I was happy to hear him say that he didn't believe it had bad intentions though. Cause it's just my baby's defense mechanism. Sorry if it came across as me saying matpat was saying that though.
I think she was trying to convince her father to forget the Lunar Wing, but “Stay here with me” could be her noticing the Player and wishing they would stay with her, viewing them as a possible friend, and not wanting to lose them as she lost her Parents.
I have a theory (It's a long one, but it's worth to give a try)- This girl is actually Lostelle. An NPC appearing in Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green. When we go to the Two Island in Sevii Islands, we figure out, that the daughter of the owner of the Game Corner has been lost and he wants us to find her Lostelle. So, we go to Three Island and enter the Berry Forest and at the end of the forest, we find Lostelle and she says (while crying) "Please help me" and then we find out that she was kidnapped by an Hypno and we fight him, we can either faint it or catch it, and after that battle, we get back to the Two Island and Lostelle returns to her father. Now, there's a very popular creepypasta about Hypno called "Hypno's Lullaby", which is basically based on this incident and Hypno' pokedex entry, which Mat talked about that in this video. So, in this creepypasta, Hypno kidnaps kids and take them into the Berry Forest and keep them away from their family forever and there's even a song made about and you can find it on TH-cam, and the worse part about that song is that it has Lavender Town's music in it. So my theory is that Lostelle was the only survivor from all those children that Hypno kidnapped and kept them them in the forest, and because of nightmares that Lostelle still has because of what Hypno did to her, her family shifted to Unova into that Strange House. And maybe those nightmares has something to do with Darkrai tormenting Lostelle. But hey, that's just a theo.... You know what, I can't do this, only Mat can.
What if Darkrai tried to be her "therapist" but she got lost in the dream and it turned into a dark void where not even Darkrai could get her out anymore but you needed the other legendary pokemon
@@randomdude7386 Seems plausible. "If the only way for her to heal is to confront what happened to her in a place where it can't actually hurt her, and I can create nightmares, then I should be able to help her. "Oops, I don't think that was supposed to happen. Well, at least she can still wake up... or not. Uh... I really messed that one up, didn't I?"
To my understanding, it isn't so much that Darkrai actively uses its nightmare powers as a means of self-defense, although they do certainly end up working in that manner in a roundabout way, but rather that it is a _constant_ force that emits from it, affecting everything in the area around it with the horrible, inescapable nightmares it is unfortunately so well known for. (as potentially indicated by its permanently active Ability Bad Dreams, which always takes effect as soon as a Pokémon falls asleep near it, and begins doing damage to them every turn) Darkrai, fully aware of how its presence harms others, actively tries to prevent scenarios like this from happening by staying as far away from other living beings as it can, and as an added countermeasure, it seems that they also try to keep their territory near an area where a Crescelia can be found, since their feathers are the only thing that can save someone once they've succumb to Darkrai's involuntarily active nightmare field. This is potentially alluded to by the only location you can legitimately find Darkrai in the main series games, Newmoon Island, being set up incredibly far from any of the Sinnoh mainland's most populated areas, yet still suspiciously within close proximity to its counterpart, Fullmoon Island, which is both noticeably less barren than its mirrored counterpart that is home to Darkrai, but is where you also just so happen find the Crescelia who gives you the feather needed to save Eldritch's son) So if I were to hazard a guess, I would say that Unova's Ghost Girl wasn't trapped in her nightmare with malicious intent, but rather she happened to come within the range of the nightmare field that was being emitted by a Darkrai who happened to find its way to a then-secluded portion of the Unova region, leaving her as yet another unintentional victim to Darkrai's unfortunate circumstances, much like Eldritch's son (who perhaps was simply sailing with his father before succumbing to the nightmare, and happened to fall asleep when they were in too close of a proximity to Newmoon Island during the trip), but this time without the help of a Player Character to venture out and save them like the case of Eldritch and his son…
Abra was in a battle with darkrai Abra could easily escape nightmares with one of its moves since it’s a psychic type darkrai affected the abra’s trainer
There are apparently pokedex entries that explain how abra will switches bodies (or minds) with a child before it evolves into a kadabra. Perhaps, either, the abra was protecting the girl from Darkrai and something went wrong, or perhaps Darkrai attempts to fix this but can't?
When the old lady said “A girl used to play with her Abra here” doesn’t that make you think of Sabrina the psychic trainer in the anime episodes? She has an Abra and she was lonely as a child, right?
WAIT A SEC!!!!! old lady! It wasn't that long ago then right? since a old lady could remember the little girl. so this took place at most 40 years before or at lest 10 years before
Complete theory...... The girl saw a darkrai and tried to catch her with the help of abra, being unknown about darkrai's abilities she attacked darkrai which made darkrai give her an everlasting nightmare.
This was one of the first videos I've watched on youtube (partially because of Covid) and I thought this was by some random unknown theorist, and this video just changed my entire life in so many ways. I have always loved this theory and when I found it four years later by complete accident, I was so happy. This video gave me an appreciation towards stories in games and I now know why Darkrai is my favorite Pokemon. (other than the amazing design) I love what Mat Pat has done with the theory, and how much it's changed my life.
So basically, ''Hey! Lets catch pokemon and get kidnapped by an big yellow pokemon that has an pendelum that can bring me to hell!'' Kind of that statement.
Same same same!! I spent so much time when I first played the game to figure out what was going on. Was really hoping this video was gonna be about that 😅
I was waiting the whole intro for him to talk about her until he said the black and white one I've never heard of lmao - not even half a second after he said that I paused the video to look at the comments expecting it to be flooded with people bitching about how the Old Chateau ghost girl and man were the first ones smh.
She's not the FIRST Ghost girl, there was a ghost girl in the old chateau in Diamond (and possibly pearl?). But she is the one with the most information.
I have a theory that connects to this theory: if Darkrai killed an innocent girl with nightmares, then that meant she'd pose a threat to the world in the future. Like you said "the nightmares were prophecies" , meaning that he actually saved the world from a future threat
And... I mean, there was the girl (?) who asked you about the ghost hand on your shoulder (which then appeared in Origins, so that was cool). Does that quantify as a 'ghost girl?'
This was one of the first videos I watched from Game Theory and I have finally returned to rewatch it! Its super interesting and rather plausible but I need to play these games-
IGSA101 people who cover ghosts in Pokémon always forget about them xD! And the first “ghost” was in lavender town with the hand. But if we’re talking people then yeah the old chateau in Diamond and Pearl
@@ethanwillis3004 The Story Goes that the Eterna City Gym Leader gardenia poisoned both the girl andThe Old Man and the proof is that in one of the trash cans you find an antidote
There was also one in Pokemon X and Y in the big circle city I don't remember what it was called, but there was one in the train station I think it was
This is it. Bad Dreams is an ability, not a move. Like Flame Body and Insomnia, it's a part of the Pokemon's natural state. Darkrai might have accidentally inflicted these nightmares while moving from one place to another. It seems like the ability is only super dangerous when the victim is a child or is actively being attacked by Darkrai while asleep. I don't think the ability is even designed to kill, just to intimidate predators or rivals to go away. Edit: The ability is called Bad Dreams, my mistake guys!
Maybe a pokemon who feeds on dreams, maybe Hypno, was keeping her asleep to feed on her nightmares because nightmares are delicious to them. Or something like that.
@@jayce1850 Well, Mechanically, Nightmare IS an attack, actually. You meant to say Bad Dreams, which is Darkrai's signature ability... which works exactly like Nightmare the move, but weaker. So, you weren't WRONG, per se, but I still felt like pointing out the distinction.
Also there's a possibility she was a trainer. It's not uncommon for people to try and catch legendaries even if they aren't ready. Because you might never see it again. Just look at Pokemon:I choose you for evidence for that. They chased Entei even though he was way out of their league. She probably chased Darkrai and during the battle, the ability activated defensively. That, or she just happened to be in the vicinity of Darkrai while he was passing through and got afflicted. Since in-game, it gives Pokemon nightmares automatically
SangoSon12 the only Pokémon who would do that is Munna, however as no Dream Mist is found in that house, and Munna aren’t evil like that, it’s unlikely. Or is strange however hat they didn’t try using Munna to cure her, but those are apparent hard to find
i love this kind of easter egg. we have al ot of games with deep intricate and complicated lore, but the best kind is these small horror stories. lavender town is my most fond memory from pokemon, especially the ghost marowak
Glad to hear I'm not alone. I knew most of this story already, but misunderstood the stay here with me-line. I always thought it was just a part of her nightmare. But reading it as her own words instead... poor girl.

Theory: Darkrai saw the Abra, thinking that the girl was being threatened by the Abra, then Darkrai shot the Abra to save the girl, the girl was actually friends with the Abra, so she was sad and fought the Darkrai, so the Darkrai had to defend itself before being caught, then shooting her
Darkrai seems like it's not entirely afraid of people, so it may have gotten close to this girl, and the sailor's son as well. In fear of hurting these children while being aware of its own strength, the pokemon may have chosen to push them away to keep them safe with the only way it knows how. Also, fun fact, Darkrai's name can be split up into two words; Dark, and Kurai. Kurai in Japanese means dark, so translating Darkrai's name fully would be DarkDark. I accept to call it nothing less.
Theory: maybe the ghost girl was playing with her Abra but then Darkrai happened upon her & her Abra attacked which led to Darkrai feeling threatened & plaguing her with the nightmares
Y'know, as a kid, I was always afraid of Darkrai, after watching the movie. . . and this does not help. You'd think that there would be more Darkrai Creepypastas.
There was one yes but it had no story, nothing also the girl wasnt even the only ghost, if you walk around the house at night other ghosts walk around not just the girl but also an old man and idk
Perhaps it was an unintentional side effect of the Pokémons nightmares. Like in the first season of Pokémon where the hypnos sleep ability for humans had detrimental side effects on random children in the area.
@@GoldLight73 A lot of people might believe that, but as far as evidence goes, Rotom(as far as Ive seen and researched), has never expressed abilities that would account for the butler or the girl. Though Rotom is known for making mischief, it's almost entierly having to deal with Rotoms interactions with electronics. It could be theorized that the TV gave Rotom the ability to make projections, but as far as I know, that would be pure speculation and hasn't really been backed up by much, if anything.
I can't be the only one who hoped this was about the Lumiose City ghost, right? Also, INB4 everyone freaks out at MatPat about how Forewarn is an ability, not a move. 😂
The Lumiose City ghost isn't an actual ghost. It's an astral projection of a Hex Maniac who lives in a nearby building. When you approach her actual body, she tells you to be quiet, otherwise she won't be able to hear the elevator. Why does she do that? I have no idea.
Kinda thoughtful how the girl decided to return the feather. Since she knew that the feather never belonged to her and she knew that she couldn’t be saved anyways :(
The ghost girl in lavender town: I have been forgotten… In Pokémon origins she legit disappears after telling red that the white hand on his shoulder must just be her imagination
He ties this ghost girl back to the one in diamond and pearl, and since platinum came after diamond and pearl, if he was right in this theory, then the statement he made was correct. If he was wrong, diamond and pearl still has the first ghost girl (in the old chateau). Unless I'm just mistaken? If I'm not, what's the problem?
He in fact has the point.. we in fact see deaths of Poké Minch and Claus in Mother 3. It has huge impact when Lucas awaken Dark Dragon (who is catatonic Lord "Mew" Giygas) to make world where humans and Poké's Monsters could live together.
As someone who has a rough relationship with her father, that bit about "begging her father to stay so that he could be with her in her final moments" actually made me cry

Well, you could argue that og ghost girl was actually the one from Red/Blue, at least it's shown that way in Pokémon Origins when Red gets to Lavender Town

Maybe the girl was a trainer and encountered darkrai and tried to catch it but failed and got the nightmares in the wild but her father found her and took her home. She had a drowsy and they had it eat it but failed. It later evolved and it got forewarn and failed again and now she has an eternal slumber and later her parents ended it all because they missed her.
Ice Cube I mean they aren’t wrong they aren’t going to immediately know just from the title of the video since there are multiple ghost girls throughout the series don’t call someone dumb if it’s not immediately obvious to them
One thing I do wish to correct is that this ghost girl from Black and White is not the first instance of a ghost girl in the pokemon games. He covered Gen 4 diamond and pearl a little bit which also had a ghost girl, the Old Chateau in Eternal forest if you go into a certain room at night you'll see the spirit of a ghost girl appear and float through the wall. You see her a couple more times I believe (it's been a while) throughout the night but that's bout it. She doesn't have a story like this girl. At least one that I can find and I don't know if there were instances of other ghost girls in gens 1-3 before this either. Small detail that doesn't really matter I just wanted to clarify (also to really nitpick for no reason he calls the ability that Drowzee and Hypno have called Forewarn a move that they use rather than an ability.)
@@iiirdvii840 Diamond and Pearl had the location Old Chateau in Eterna Forest, right by the entrance that leads to Eterna City. In there is not only where you find Rotom, but also plenty of strange phenomena. Statues will have glowing red eyes for a second for example. Also in several rooms, such as the dining room and one of the bedrooms, you can see an NPC, standing there for a second, before floating out of the room. You can find several members of the family who once lived there, wandering their once humble home as restless souls.
Kanchan Bala back in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl there is this Old Chateau in the middle of the forest, you need HM Cut to cut the tree that is blocking the front gate. As you go inside, you need to go full detective or cheat mode (go through walls) and as you go to one of the rooms you would see an NPC and that NPC glides outside her room, yes she glides and it is not a glitch, her NPC body didn't move it glides
Despite it's type and appearance, Darkrai is gentle. From what I saw in Journeys, it unfortunately can't be near others for long without accidentally putting them into an unending nightmare. That explains why it's close to Cresselia, the only friend it can have that won't suffer from it's immense power. Since Cresselia tends to roam then the least she could do is leave her buddy with some Lunar Wings.
OBJECTION! The true first ghost girl can be found in the old chateau in sinnoh. She can be spotted hiding out in a separate room if you explore the bedrooms.
It's been a few decades now but pretty sure gen 1 had something in Lavender town where someone ask if you believe in ghost and if you say no they say something about a hand on your shoulder. I seem to remember a visual for it too though my memories honestly quite vague on it.
YES! I'm playing Diamond at this moment and I was like 'The girl in the chateau. The girl in the chateau. The girl in the chateau. MATPAT, THE GIRL IN THE CHATEAU!'
Even sadder is that darkrai can’t control its nightmare abilities and gas to seclude it’s self because of that. Darkrai didn’t even mean to
Hillary the mclamb Despisito didn’t need to make it sadder
At least I'm not the only one who thinks Darkrai doesn't mean harm.

I have a theory (It's a long one, but it's worth to give a try)-
This girl is actually Lostelle.
YES HYPNOSIS LULLABY
To my understanding, it isn't so much that Darkrai actively uses its nightmare powers as a means of self-defense, although they do certainly end up working in that manner in a roundabout way, but rather that it is a _constant_ force that emits from it, affecting everything in the area around it with the horrible, inescapable nightmares it is unfortunately so well known for. (as potentially indicated by its permanently active Ability Bad Dreams, which always takes effect as soon as a Pokémon falls asleep near it, and begins doing damage to them every turn)
Darkrai, fully aware of how its presence harms others, actively tries to prevent scenarios like this from happening by staying as far away from other living beings as it can, and as an added countermeasure, it seems that they also try to keep their territory near an area where a Crescelia can be found, since their feathers are the only thing that can save someone once they've succumb to Darkrai's involuntarily active nightmare field. This is potentially alluded to by the only location you can legitimately find Darkrai in the main series games, Newmoon Island, being set up incredibly far from any of the Sinnoh mainland's most populated areas, yet still suspiciously within close proximity to its counterpart, Fullmoon Island, which is both noticeably less barren than its mirrored counterpart that is home to Darkrai, but is where you also just so happen find the Crescelia who gives you the feather needed to save Eldritch's son)
So if I were to hazard a guess, I would say that Unova's Ghost Girl wasn't trapped in her nightmare with malicious intent, but rather she happened to come within the range of the nightmare field that was being emitted by a Darkrai who happened to find its way to a then-secluded portion of the Unova region, leaving her as yet another unintentional victim to Darkrai's unfortunate circumstances, much like Eldritch's son (who perhaps was simply sailing with his father before succumbing to the nightmare, and happened to fall asleep when they were in too close of a proximity to Newmoon Island during the trip), but this time without the help of a Player Character to venture out and save them like the case of Eldritch and his son…

Abra was in a battle with darkrai
Abra could easily escape nightmares with one of its moves since it’s a psychic type
darkrai affected the abra’s trainer
Yes. Makes sense. Then the Abra would have a part in the story. 👍
Abra's "Synchronize" accidentally passed the nightmare onto the trainer maybe?
There are apparently pokedex entries that explain how abra will switches bodies (or minds) with a child before it evolves into a kadabra. Perhaps, either, the abra was protecting the girl from Darkrai and something went wrong, or perhaps Darkrai attempts to fix this but can't?
But why would abra fight darkrai

Darkrai's ability to cause nightmares is something he cannot control, that's why he is found secluded in diamond and pearl

Darkrai seems like it's not entirely afraid of people, so it may have gotten close to this girl, and the sailor's son as well. In fear of hurting these children while being aware of its own strength, the pokemon may have chosen to push them away to keep them safe with the only way it knows how.

I would love for you to cover the other ghosts in Pokemon lore. Especially the one in Kalos.
Especially Mimikyu

How about the story of x and y?

Matpat: HELLO INTERNET WELCOME TO GAME THEORY
Think mat is leaving out major thing. The girl's abra. Don't think she's actually dead, abra has probably just tpd her out of existence/time to preserve its masters life or to stop her from suffering non stop.
I see what ur saying but its too much of a stretch. U need more evidence
@@JaidenTheBest it's just a theory. Only reasoning is why is abra specifically mentioned. The pokemon always associated with teleporting, that's why she just disappeared on the bridge, got tpd away by abra.
You are the next Mat Pat you legend
@@bobplaceholder3355 nah mat pat is pro theorist he spent weeks on a fnaf children's book
The original ghost girl is from diamond and pearl(the old chateau)
Great video tho!
Literally was about to comment this
I see you are a loyal Poke-Fan *WAKANTO FOREVER*
Actually from Gen 1 but you have to do some out of bounds glitching.
That was just what I thought
Gen 4th-ers forever!
Title: *mysterious ghost girl*
Me: Be specific please, there are a bunch of this in the games
There is at least 3 of them
Ice Cube I mean they aren’t wrong they aren’t going to immediately know just from the title of the video since there are multiple ghost girls throughout the series don’t call someone dumb if it’s not immediately obvious to them
The one that got stuffed in the animatronic bear suit. Thats right freddies actually exists in pokemon
@Ice Cuber/woooosh?
At first I thought "what do you mean there's only that on... wait there's also that one... and that one... never mind."
MatPat: "Are you ready for a ghost story?"
Me: "Well, yes but actually no"
th-cam.com/video/gdEuJ1hAVhQ/w-d-xo.html
Stories in games involving dead children.
Matpat: It's free real estate.
Of course you would know about that, tsumugi

Y sí, uno no se espera estas cosas; pero con MatPat uno se acostumbra.
The top right rejection, what does that mean? I can only think of “No, I am not your density”

"Pokemon's first ever Ghost Girl..."
**cough*Old Chateau*cough**
Pshaw. That wasn't the original ghost girl. OBVIOUSLY the one 6 years afterward was the OG
who?!
What about the white hand in Gen 1?
Max G4 The girl outside Pokémon Tower? She wasn’t a ghost. She just claimed to have seen one. Hence, she isn’t a ghost girl.
Aight, now we need videos on all the other ghost girls, like the REAL first one from D&P
That Old Chateau messed with me, I didn't see that coming at all and it raises so many questions for me.
Old man and little girl and red eyes painting
What are you talking about guys? Can you explain
@@Anugrah_Amriza same goes for the old man in the dining hall he just glides to the left and when you follow he disappears
Matpat used childhood destroyer
Its super effective!
ikr
No effect when childhood is already ruined.
Peanut Saber, Correct, My Childhood Is Already Ruined By My Teachers, My Guides.
lol
He has a lot of title
*childhood destroyer*
*disney movie crusher*
*fnaf maniac*
*dream eater*
*nightmare bringer*
And more
Despite it's type and appearance, Darkrai is gentle.
Was searching for this.
Your right I just cheked
It's been a few decades now but pretty sure gen 1 had something in Lavender town where someone ask if you believe in ghost and if you say no they say something about a hand on your shoulder. I seem to remember a visual for it too though my memories honestly quite vague on it.
@@grn1 You are thinking of the lavender town scene in Pokemon Origins. I know because I've seen that scene like 12 times.
YES! I'm playing Diamond at this moment and I was like 'The girl in the chateau. The girl in the chateau. The girl in the chateau. MATPAT, THE GIRL IN THE CHATEAU!'
