    To answer a few questions I have been asked. I used a lightweight white board from Home Depot and put a couple of coats of polyurethane to give it a little more durability and protection against the weather. The solar panel and battery system came from voltaic systems.

    I live about 3 miles from the WIKE shop, where they are made. I think they have been making them for about 40 years. Good people that own the company.

    If you're getting your tires at Walmart, with my experience, they're Blackburn tires.

    Thank you so very much for this video! Extremely informative! Ive been debating, getting a Wike kit as i want to build a lightweight pop up camper for my Ebike, and, the fact that you can flip it upside down like that made my decision! Thats exactly what i needed! Wike really needs to include your video on their website, as theirs are nowhere near as informative! Since it will be a sleeping platform encased in a lightweight pop up, i want all the confortable sleeping space i can get for me and my small dog. Also, by flipping it, i can envision even having a shallow slide out carrier underneath that slides out the rear end for all my minimalist cooking and kitchen gear! Great video! You are awesome! Oh, and I love your little pup tent riding space on top of the trailer!

    this is what I was looking for thanks for doing this. I live about 15km from this place and I hope they are still open. I am going to look into this. I also ride a recumbent trike. My trike is a Catrike trail. Again thanks will look into this as soon as I can hoping to tour from Cambridge Ontario to Winnipeg Manitoba. I hope to carry my gear and later use it for groceries when I get back. happy Trails to you.

    Thank you for sharing your experience/first hand knowledge.
    As a fellow DIYselfer, I appreciate your discussing several points relevant to making the Wike trailer a personalized tool.
    The verifying parts were a pleasure to see as credit for walking the walk as well as talking the talk.
    I learned several things and am thankful to have watched your well intentioned video.
    Well done, all round !!!

    Bro I think Wike would do good to fallow your design with the layout as by flipping that style bracket you gained a lot of bottom up support And I have no doubt that is why were able to carry much heavier loads good thinking on your part you gained in tow ways with that one change. Thanks for the video as It has given me help with my build .

    I used an old Instep kid trailer , striped down. Then I used an aluminum road sign as the floor and waterproof material for the roof and sides. Then put 20in wheels instead of the fourteen inch it had.

      No, I have this trailer kit also. I believe the Nylon parts, so better then plastic. Are molded/cast. Very sturdy and well made. I got my kit back in July, built it up installed a 55 gallon weather proof tote on it, and its working great.

    So how would adding another set of wheels benefit

    • @michaelsaxton9085
      @michaelsaxton9085 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I kind of don't think it would benefit, think about this, if you have four wheels, not only is it extra weight added, but in turning corners, the tire are going to scrub the road surface and wear out much quicker!

  • @nerdx1649
    @nerdx1649 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not have flipped it so it had the 3" little ledge ? Or does it have to be with that ledge down for support?

  • @dehoedisc7247
    @dehoedisc7247 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You must have a certain amount invested in your very good trailer, and I would think that, considering the weight, you might benefit from using a better grade of tires and tubes (the thought of "walmart" items speaks of very poor quality). Just a thought in the safety and serviceability category.

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! When possible I buy from bike shops. There are some places where the only place I could buy tires for the trailer was Walmart. Their Bell tires worked pretty well for the trailer. For the trike I often would have tires sent to a friend along the route where I could pick them up.

    Hello Tim.. I'm thinking of using this to create a bicycle camper.. Once the aluminum frame and deck are down.. I plan to use 4'x8' sheets of Chloroplast (corrugated plastic) and attach the 4' end to the side of the frame with thin piece of aluminum and screws.. then arch it over to attach to the other side.. I'm want to make the bed 6' length. And just narrow enough to fit thru a standard 32" door way.. This will take 2 pieces of corrugated plastic seamed with 100% rubber silicone.. There will be about a 8" overhang for a vestibule at front and back.. Can you tell me the actual length of the aluminum tubes that were cut for width to fit thru a door..?
    Nice video instruction.. Thanks Robb

    Can you offer any information about the hitch. I have a quick release, skewer type axle on the back wheel of my recumbent. Does this trailer kit work for that? Did you have a through axle on your trike or skewer? Please advise.

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My trike (HP Velotechnik Scorpion) has the traditional bolt-on rear bike axle with internal gears, so the hitch mount bolted on instead of a quick release. I think it would work for a quick release, but I'm not sure. Here is a website where I got some ideas. He has more photos that might be helpful. valdodge.com/2009/07/04/custom-bike-trailer/

    Hi Tim, I’m building mine this weekend and it’s going to be the same as yours. Can you tell me the size of the hardware you used to attach the vertical pieces of aluminum? Also, what type of drill bit did you use? Thanks for the info

    • @longrider42
      @longrider42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not Tim, but I can help you. Since the tubing on the trailer is 1 inch square, depends on how thick your uprights are. Since the bolts are all Quarter Inch, use a quarter inch drill bit, but get a good one for metal.

    • @c.a.s3162
      @c.a.s3162 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@longrider42 thanks for the reply James. I ended up building it about a week ago and it turned out great. We went without the vertical poles because instead of building an enclosure for the dogs we just used ratchet straps to secure the XL kennel to the side rails. It’s perfect! Now our two 14 year old pups can go for trips to the park and coffee shop with us. We bought an extra Mount so we have one on each bike in case we want to switch off during a trip

    Hi Tim just what I've been looking for. Do you think it would take the weight of a person 15 st.Im thinking of building one and having a canvas cover over it and sleeping in it overnight to get off the ground. And do the wheels just bolt on around where the middle plastic fitting is and are they quick release Des ps Great video

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's rated for 150 pounds, but I carried much more weight than that. It probably depends on the materials you use. The company that makes the kit has a trailer with a canvas cover, sort of like a covered wagon. They could probably tell you the weight limitations.

    • @CrazyUncleTim
      @CrazyUncleTim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The wheels are quick release and slide into the fittings.

    • @michaelsaxton9085
      @michaelsaxton9085 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'd like to also add, that if you need more weight capacity as far as sleeping on it, you can use steel tubing the same size, but will weigh more, trade off if that's what you need.
