I'm guessing the customers really appreciate when their cars are featured in a video, because it's such a transparent, easy to follow way of seeing what's going on, your thought processes, and how you came to the conclusions you did.

I had an idea for a mechanic shop where every car that comes in gets a personalized video sent to them for initial inspections and such. Ppl would have to pay more for it though. And hiring people would be tough because everyone would have to be able to make videos and you'd have to streamline everything. But its an idea!

My brother ended up with a New Beetle after the divorce. His ex-wife was so frustrated with its mechanical problems so it was sort of revenge dump. My brother replaced the fuel pump and several components with ones that were designed and made for German market. The German version was more robust and had higher design tolerance (especially for the Autobahn drive). Ever since, his New Beetle has been very reliable and trouble-free with no stumbling or anything. The New Beetle was given to his daughter who drove it for a several years before upgrading to Toyota RAV4.

I'm 16 years old and I drive a VW Beetle myself. I like watching these types of TH-cam videos that show some common thing's that go out on these bugs, and what to look for if I were to get any codes from my car. I put some work into it. Replacing the oil pressure sensor, heater hose for the coolant Reservoir, new motor oil, and an oil filter. As well as fresh coolant. It needed all new gas struts and headlights. During the summer I'm taking this car to a shop that will work on my AC. Then when I get it back I will replace the rear brake rotors and pads and the indicator switch because it likes to act up at times. These are fun little cars, but their not so fun to work on. My car is 22 years old and I feel like I'm restoring it without meaning to.

Re: Jaguar S Type. I have a 2009 Scion I bought new from the local super-dealership (Honda, Toyota, Lexus, Acura, Chevy). I took it to them for all the services. The last time, the mechanic met me in the waiting room and said that my cabin filter needed replacing. I called him on it and told him Scions imported to the US market in 2009 didn't come with cabin filters, mine never had one and that I had checked it myself when I bought it that it didn't have one. I asked to talk to the service manager and he agreed with me. When I got home I checked the oil level in the car and found that it was way overfilled. I pulled 4 quarts of oil out of the sump to get it to normal. The mechanic had overfilled the ehgine with oil. Revenge? So after 10 years of being a loyal customer I quit them and found my own "Wizard", an honest local mechanic.

That frees up the current shop to handle all the day to day work. He needs a few more lifts, and a few more mechanics. After a lot of hard work and a little luck with the TH-cam Channel, they are now in a position where he can pick and choose the best mechanics in the business, and afford to pay them well enough they would be willing to move to Kansas. Mr and Mrs Wizard appear to be just as shrewd business people, as they are at their "regular jobs". A rare quality for a small business owner. They deserve all the success they receive.

Back in high school, I was the only kid at my school who kept a clean car. My 1st car was a 1997 Honda Accord Special Edition. My dad bought it from an elder man in Naples, FL. It was dark purple like a plum. Every Saturday morning, I use to get up and go outside and wash my car. I had the cleanest high school kid car. I kept it waxed and polished, well maintained. My Dad and I would work on it when it needed things like brakes, oil change, a few sensors here and there. I kept it stock (factory spoiler, sunroof wind deflector, 30% tint, beige/gray interior w/factory Honda in-dash CD Radio and it had the Honda gold emblems). I drove that car throughout high school and college. From 2005 (during my Junior year, I graduated in 2006) up until May 2014. Thats when I passed the car down to my little cousin. I sorted it out and had it painted back to the same color before I gave it to him. Him and his dad takes good care of it to this day. The car now has about 435k miles and it still runs like a top. #keepitinthefamily #hondareliability

When we got together my wife had an '01 beetle with the n/a 2.0 liter and a 5 speed. It was not only the perfect learners car, I'd say it is the perfect platform for teaching track day basics. For starting out w/ a standard it has a very small, low compression engine, but with a heavy flywheel. Meaning, the inertia of the flywheel will allow for much less accurate clutch usage whilst keeping you from stalling. It's also a small, lightweight car with tons of room inside. On the track, it makes almost no power, so you have to learn how to use momentum. You can't save yourself from picking a lousy line or hammering the breaks by simply stabbing the throttle. It takes forever to build speed again. However, they handle well and stay flat in corners. By maintaining composure and using proper fundamentals you can really build your track acumen. Just a great platform.

Car Wizard is so right about these cars. Dont' bother trying to make it perfect, just keep it running any way you can. In my 40 years of working on cars (including complete engine rebuilds), keeping my daughter's 2004 New Beetle convertible on the road may be my greatest mechanical accomplishment. Without a doubt, the most troublesome and quirky car I have ever owned. I've replaced so many parts that I couldn't list them all here. One of the worst things about these cars is the crumbling plastic on the interior. Just about everything I've repaired on the interior involved some portion of the plastic material crumbling or breaking, no matter how careful I was. The door panels are the absolute worst. Replacement door panels (with varying degrees of damage) on ebay are going for sky high prices since they all break in various places and new ones from VW either aren't available or are ridiculously expensive.

My Mom has a 2005 Beetle. She LOVED that car. Sure it had a number of electrical issues but lots of VW / Audis have those issues.
The one thing that was a total pain in the ass was the cabin air filter. I changed that before she sold the car and it was a process. I think it took me 30 minutes -AND I work on cars! I placed a note under the first panel you remove to note the date and mileage of the last filter change.

My kids earned a large portion of their first cars via payments, I co-signed for a brand new Prius for each kid, all of them took excellent care of their vehicles. Zero accidents. Each still drives them post college. Zero defects and 200k plus miles later on each. Stick with Toyota folks. To assume a kid will wreck a car is setting your standards low and kids tend to meet the standards you set for them. BTW, each earned 100% of their college tuition as well.

I had bought a turbo 20v of these for $500, no one could find why it kept getting an EGR code, I got drunk and left it on all night, it blew the headgasket, when I took the head off I noticed it wasn't the original one and didint have holes for an EGR, just the mounting holes gor the EGR valve, I went to home depot, grabbed the longest 5/16's drill bit I could find, removed the exhaust valves, and drilled a hole all the way thought the head, then drilled the holes that blow air through the exhaust valves, I could only get to 3 cylinders, worked perfect and it passed California smog.

Around here, it's quite common for shops to have only one mechanic and the rest are low wage techs with certifications starting at $8.50 hourly. Parts changers, that's it. Considering how ignorant the average customer is and the 15-20% markup on parts, shops love parts changers. Why hire a diagnostitian that can actually lower customer cost when you can just fire the parts cannon until something sticks?

It had the usual blown head gasket, but was hanging in there and had a clean body and interior. Good enough. So we sent him off in it.
Made it about a month, Ditched it tearing the front clip to pieces. Air bags deployed and destroyed the interior. Total loss.

I knew several people where their parents gave them cheap $1000 junkers and they still went out and destroyed them, because they didn't pay for them. Yet I also know a few others who bought new cars in high school (or shortly there after) maybe with parents help, and they drove those things for 5-10 years, because it was their money they were driving around.

  • @HR-wd6cw

IDK. I still think a used Corolla or Civic might be a better high school car. They generally don't have the same issues many other cars have especially when they get older, and there are a lot of them out there. I don't know if I would personally recommend a Beetle to anyone, as a daily driver or a first car. I feel (based on people I've known who had them) that they can need more repairs that other cars like some of the Hondas or Toyotas. I guess if you found a Beetle cheap enough (and maybe you can because VW stopped making them for a reason, and it wasn't because they were selling good, because I don't think they did) then maybe it's OK, but I wouldn't pay more than a few thousand dollars for a running one. Plus, you don't see too many Beetles on the road anymore (I'm talking about ones from the 2000-era) which can also tell you something about their reliability and popularity. You see far more 10-15 year old Civics and Corollas than you do Beetles.

Bought a 2002 for my daughter with the 2.0 when she graduated high school. Fun little car, drove good for about 5 minutes. Gas cap release failed, 250 dollars to fix. Starter went out, 436 dollars to repair. Coolant temp sensor failed, 100 bucks. Change spark plugs, 250 bucks because you have to remove the manifold. Door panels falling apart, 400 bucks each to replace. Oil dipstick plastic upper tube disintegrated due to heat from engine, 60 bucks to replace. Interior smell like crayons the entire time we owned the car. Absolutely the biggest heap of junk I have ever had the displeasure to own. When the 1200 dollar air bag sensor went out, I got rid of the car. Will never ever own another one, and if anyone asked I would try to persuade them to buy something else.

Bought my daughter a 2000 Beetle 2.0 when she turned 16. No real issues with it except she got a rebuilt transmission for it when it hit about 165k miles. She drove it for about 10 years until she was rear-ended and it was totaled.
She got a well put together 2012 Beetle 2.5 that is in great shape.
They can be pretty rock solid if you keep on top of them.
You just have to either know what to look for in VW/Audis and have them scanned to dodge the lemons out there (I have my own VCDS for scanning VWs and was able to nix a few cars that weren't really up to snuff.)

I bought a similar era beetle for my teen age son a number of years back - worst modern car I have been associated with - constant issues with only a little over 100K miles on it. Simple repairs could get expensive, for example VW wanted $700 dollars for a simple throttle position sensor. Similar price for a key fob, which I ended up hacking together with J-B Weld. I remember talking to the parts counter person at the local dealership about how expensive parts were. The parts person agreed. It turns out that that dealership dropped the VW brand shortly afterward.
Because of my experience with this car I will never buy another European car. I was impressed by the gauge of metal used to fabricate the door, but little else.

Wizard sort-of addressed this in a video a long time ago (late 2019/early 2020 IIRC). Long story short, all his employees are mechanics and he "has"[1] to charge you the mechanics' hourly rate for washing the car, which is a no-go (except for cleaning specific parts of the engine bay/transmission while diagnosing leaks). He also doesn't do tires/alignments for a similar reason[2] (loads of specialized equipment that only pay for themselves if you use them nearly constantly).
[1]: FWIW, I think that's fair and reasonable.
[2]: In fact, I'm amazed by how many mechanics' shops in the US seemingly have tire shop equipment; where I live very few do (although there are quite a few tire shops that'll do light mechanics stuff like brakes, CV shafts, suspension, and similar)
