I manufactured dashboards here in Michigan for Ford an Chrysler the melted plastic tabs are from a heatstaking process which melts the plastic with heat and pressure from a hot foot which melts and rolls the plastic to create a melted mushroomed head. Most matl. the plastic will be a polypropylene use the same type of plastic to melt to the existing leg, or we use C. A. Glue and bond in a new piece to remelt. 👍 Good luck good vid.

I watch so many upholstery video looking for a particular task but none and absolutely none explain how to attach the insert back to the door panel. I guess that mean you are the best, period. That is my story and I am sticking to it. I have been looking for that last step how to attach the insert and you are the only one who show and explain how.

It was a nightmare! We followed your instructions, made the pattern & cleaned that cardboard form completely. The new vinyl stuck perfectly and fits so well! Thank you again!
This method works like a charm. I’ll add that when you first melt the zip tie to the door, I used a plastic mender, with the metal wires, to attach at first, then I melted zip tie into and all over the tie and about an inch to each side. I only lost about one zip tie per panel.
Thanks William! Brilliant method for reattaching! I went right for your method despite it looking like a PITA as you are a professional. If you are doing this for others - its gotta work. I tried heat welding some smaller zip-ties in place and it seems to work well. Then, with a little bumping about as I was installing, the panel fell out... I went and got wide zip-ties and some Permatex plastic weld. I bent the ties as you show to get good surface area, applied the epoxy, then used heat to tack the zip-ties in place and allow the epoxy to dry. It worked perfectly! NONE of them broke off and the wide ties worked really well. Thank you again, good sir!
Dude. I’ve been pulling my damn hair out trying to fix these panels. 04 convertible. So most everything dry rotted because the previous owners didn’t keep it covered properly. Thank You for these awesome tips.
This is an excellent tutorial. For those doing this at home, I was only able to find 1 gallon cans of Xylene. Much more then I wanted to purchase. My local Ace Hardware recommended Goof Off Professional. This comes in a six ounce can and contains Acetone and Xylene. Seemed to do the job for me.

You did a good job. I've been doing auto upholstery for 24 years. I have my own shop in Hagerstown. Just a few tips for you and those watching. 1. Wait an hour or so until the glue drys good. It wont pull off and you can move it around without it sticking before you want it too. 2. Drill holes in the back flange and reattach it with a 2 part epoxy. Use adhesive promoter on the door panel to help the epoxy stick to certain plastics like polypropylene. Norton's structural adhesive, Speed grip 5 after the panel is clamped in place works great.
Warren763 - you look like you know what you are talking about and I wish I could understand you. "Back flange?" What is that? And what is the purpose of drilling holes? Would appreciate it if you would go back and clear up what you are saying so that those of us that are not in the upholstery business can understand your obviously expertise comments. Great job! You’re video was tremendously well done, great camera work and editing. The thing that is so wonderful is your calm and easy going demeanor. Thank you so much. I’ve got a t-100 Toyota truck with those darned heat-stack, melted in plastic rivets too. However, because you did so terrific a job at the step by step, I’m more comfortable with dremeling off the heads, drilling in and using a screw to hold it in place. I’ve got a pattern (stripe) on my material though. Your experience showed great sewing for the material to not bunch up. Now I just need to place the stripes where they’ll be the least trouble about making them remain vertical through the bends and curves.

I removed all of it with 90 percent alcohol. It takes it down to hard, matte plastic, but it looks and feels much better than the delaminated plastic. This worked on the door handles as well.

Mr. Hall, first off thanks, my '01 NB has the same type of failure and that inner material has separated. At 1:03 you showed that the door card frame was broken and mentioned you would show how to fix it, I didn't catch it in this video. Did you melt it together/ weld it with the soldering iron and zip ties as filler material? I love the idea of using the zip tie ratchet end as a fastener...WIN!!!

I followed these good instructions, but found that after I "welded" the zip ties to the door, I filled hot glue around the bases. That made them extremely strong.

@MeshelleMyBell I'd guess he used ABS welding rods and a soldering gun again. He mentions them in the video. You can use the same method with cracked handles although you'd also want to install a reinforcing plate so it doesn't crack again. You'd do the entire repair from the rear. You'll still see the fracture line in front, but it won't separate or move. If you want an extra strength repair on the side crack you could melt a piece of metal into the ABS spanning the crack.
Most zip ties are made of Nylon, like these that you used, and so that means no glue out there that I have ever heard of will actually stick to them, so this heat and weld system is definitely the way to go when using zip ties. If you are not a fan of the zip ties, you could cut strips of abs plastic from a donor source such as a heavy plastic jug and melt them in place the same way, then when its time for the final step of locking them in, just heat again and melt the inch or so of excess into a ball/knot to keep them from coming loose. :)
The only thing is, it would be really nice if there was some kind of foamy material that you could put between the vinyl and the door card... but now I have the confidence that I’ll restore that old junk-yard dog, in the garage! Thanks!

I’ve a door panel that seems to have a hardened type, almost rubber-like, foam backing that the material was easily removed from. Must I remove this too?, or can I just use my rubber cement on it. It’s really solidly applied to the plastic molded door panel and seems securely set. My concern is applying the rubber cement (going to use weldwood brand) to this rubber-like material.
I don’t know if you are still active on your account. I am currently in the process of replacing my beetle door fabric. It’s completely fallen apart!! Is there a way I can do it without all the melting and hot gluing?? Also where did you get the leather sticker?
I used bondic to attach the zip ties. My leather was still good so I cleaned glue and foam off and reused. There are places online that sell the leather precut.
Two far better ways to reattach are abs hotmelt glue or just use scrap abs from another broken panel and melt it like you did but the most secure and simpliest on most of this stuff is use fiberglass cloth over the repair and use multipurpose PVC/ABS pipe cement as your resin and clean the plastic first with MEK and it will stick well. Rebuilt a whole 2001 Dodge ram dash with this method.
It’s called a spline roller and you can pick it up at your local hardware store. It’s used to re-screen the screen on your doors and windows on your house
That was a lot of cement. More than I'd use. I liked the xylene tip. I'm going to get some. And I would have laid foam over the board. Some cushion would be nice.
It's ok to use some pad ,the only reason I didn't is if you look,it already had pad and it came apart. I think without foam is longer lasting fix. I have done it both ways,and the pad does feel softer.
@@williamhall749 true. What I've seen with all European cars is the foam they used is essentially headliner not seat pad. If you've upholstered a Vw, Volvo or older Benz you know what I mean. Yellow, doughy and sticky. German cars are the worst quality of everything I see. I'm recovering a sunshade on an 09 e class today. An 09!!! My 1995 roadmaster was better made. I'll keep watching your videos. I enjoyed them.

I used silicone to stick it back on.
I bought a repair manual that lists all the steps, so I don't forget to reconnect anything. The videos definitely help visualize the steps.

soldering gun works good just remember its brittle and may need extra support. JB weld maybe

Two far better ways to reattach are abs hotmelt glue or just use scrap abs from another broken panel and melt it like you did but the most secure and simpliest on most of this stuff is use fiberglass cloth over the repair and use multipurpose PVC/ABS pipe cement as your resin and clean the plastic first with MEK and it will stick well. Rebuilt a whole 2001 Dodge ram dash with this method.

It’s called a spline roller and you can pick it up at your local hardware store. It’s used to re-screen the screen on your doors and windows on your house

That was a lot of cement. More than I'd use. I liked the xylene tip. I'm going to get some. And I would have laid foam over the board. Some cushion would be nice.
It's ok to use some pad ,the only reason I didn't is if you look,it already had pad and it came apart. I think without foam is longer lasting fix. I have done it both ways,and the pad does feel softer.
@@williamhall749 true. What I've seen with all European cars is the foam they used is essentially headliner not seat pad. If you've upholstered a Vw, Volvo or older Benz you know what I mean. Yellow, doughy and sticky. German cars are the worst quality of everything I see. I'm recovering a sunshade on an 09 e class today. An 09!!! My 1995 roadmaster was better made. I'll keep watching your videos. I enjoyed them.
