If Henri and Sergio hadn't died in Corsica, they would have won the world championship. Excluding the B groups, the Lancia Delta won several world titles. The technology of the S4 was light years ahead, its potential was only at 70%, if Audi had revolutionized the S1, the new treflux engine would have disintegrated everyone.🇮🇹

@@QuellodeltabaccoThough True that the Delta was never fully developed because the team was shell shocked after those tragic Deaths but also because they nobbled their chances of winning both totals in 1986 one by trying to make sure an Italian won the championship over their much faster Finnish driver and of course trying to rig the result of the San Remo Rally by getting Peugeot disqualified this cost them the Championship once the FIA rule that the Peugeot's were legal and the result from San Remo did not count anymore.
Yes the S4 was fast but it was an accident waiting to happen with no really safety features. Compared to the much stronger built cars from Audi and Peugeot and the Metro 6R4 were a lot stronger.
But let's not forget that none of the other leading teams were sitting around doing nothing . Audi was still working on its semi-automatic gear shifting with Porsche and on that subject 1987 would have seen the arrival of the 959 with its advanced 4WD and electronics .Peugeot was developing a form of electronic differential and other traction control systems to make the cars more driverable. Then there were the cars both Nissan and Toyota were already developing.
Things like the Lancia prototype ECV were thrown into the ring to try and stop Group B from being banned even Group S was just another attempt to keep these cars alive one way or another after all millions had been spent by these companies working on these cars only to see no return for those with cars that would never race come 1987.
Of course we know Lancia has the best cards they already had plan B should Group B be replaced with Group A in the Form of the Delta HF Integrale and we all know who that story panned out. So in one way Lancia we're Well ahead of it rivals but had Group continued into 1987 and Had Audi returned and if all the other new Teams added their respective takes on 4WD and turbos and whatever else then I think it could have been very interesting but it was not to be instead we just have those brief three years from 1983 to 86 the rest is History now.

A great time, a time before eliminating group b was even on anyone’s radar. The future was exciting for rally. It was so popular in much of the world at that time. And such a beautiful variety of cars, all with novel design solutions to going fast on loose surfaces. Beautiful! The drivers were so talented and courageous, it was a time when mistakes could literally cost a driver his/her (❤️Michelle Moulton😍 and Louise Walker❤️) life. Competition at this level represented so much more at stake for the drivers of the time. Much like F1, there was a genuine and often arbitrary risk to ones life. Such risk created tragedy for sure, but it also raised the drivers in my eyes. It took genuine courage and skill to succeed.

That 84-87 period was the pinnacle of motorsport. Enormous new turbo power that only the best drivers could master. Not always with 4wd. Formula 1 had over 1400hp for qualifying laps. The technicians were the best, the drivers had to be fearless and constantly attack to learn new limits. Brilliant.

The winning Lancia #6 I saw back in September at the Lime Rock Park Historic Festival 42 car show and could not believe my eyes that it was driven by Henri. It was my favorite car I saw in 2024.

William Wollard, what a great presenter, both on Top Gear and Tomorrow's World. I remember when the rally had "Duel" by Propaganda as a opening title tune...the days of the Audi Quattro as king.

What a legend Toivonen was. Ton up through the speed trap, turns turtle, still wins. Still that modest good humour and wry smile too!
