  • Lisa Gade reviews the 2019 HP ZBook 14u G6, a very compact 14” business and mobile workstation laptop with a CNC aluminum chassis. Squarespace.com is our video's sponsor. Head to squarespace.com/mobiletechreview to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain. The ZBook 14u G6 runs Windows 10 on Intel 8th gen Core i5 and i7 CPUs with AMD Radeon Pro WX 3200 dedicated graphics. The 18mm, 3.27 lb. / 1.48kg has plenty of ports, including Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C and Ethernet. It’s available with a 600 nit matte 4K UHD display (our unit) and extremely bright full HD privacy displays. It targets content creators including 2D CAD work. Want it bigger? There’s the 15” ZBook 15u.

I'm glad Lisa is getting good sponsors and that she's very explicit with it, unlike other tech tubers who try to make it a natural recommendation (which totally fails and is quite unappealing).
This laptop looks quite appealing you know... Also, a laptop that has the ventilation every processor deserves.

It has two RAM slots. It has I/O aplomb. It's a winner for a lot of people who wants an upgradeable mobile workstation. I do think the 15" variant may be a better value. Whiskey Lake, when cooled well can equal the same performance that we had in the Kaby Lake H series (45W variants)

So who is the thinnest or lightest, or has the fewest ports today.
    I love the ports!
upgradeable by the user ssd, and two ram slots up to 32gb, excellent.
    good speakers.
    dedicated graphics.
    ethernet, my goodness.
I would like to seem them compete on having more ports, cooler thermals, removable memory, dual ssds, sd card, better audio and keyboards, workmanship, after purchase service

All they had to do is fix the bezel, and this would be an amazing laptop. As much as aesthetics isn't a priority, it does play a major role in purchasing for most customers.

Huh! Interesting to see them try to copy the Thinkpad. lol. It seems like their trackpoint copy is too flat, though, like it's too in-line with the keys. Most of the Thinkpad ones are more raised and pronounced so you don't accidentally press it AND so you can find it easily if you want. lol. Really awesome review, Lisa, as always!

A couple of quick questions that I don't think were answered in your video. I know you mentioned the 1 m.2 ssd, but is there any option at all to add a second drive? I am assuming if there was you would have mentioned it, but just hoping for a definitive answer. Also what are your thoughts on pairing something like this with an egpu and do you know how many pcie lanes it has? I have the oppurtunity to get this laptop with the i5, intel graphics, 1080p screen for about $1k new but hoping to add another drive and use an egpu. Thanks!

Hi Lisa, I bought a year and a half ago the zbook 14u G5 with the i7-8550U for my personal use and the cooling is not great at all and the chassis is the same. as G6. Repasting the thing only got better by a very little margin, if any. Maybe new Intel's U generation CPUs are cooler than last year's, or did you get an i5 sample that probably doesn't heat much. I've got a work laptop with the i5-8300U from last year and it doesn't as i7 version.

How would you say this compares to the HP Envy. I know that seems an odd comparison but they have the same cpu and at the moment for a similar configuration they are about the same price (UK). I love that this has upgradable ram but I like the slim more portable envy. Mostly for music/audio production so not too fussed by graphics. I am starting to be won over by a touch screen now!

Always great reviews....but here is my rant...what is it with the preoccupation with thinness? Like phones, they are becoming thin simply to be thin, not to add to their value or practicality. And like with phones, if they added a few mm of thickness and added a few more of the adapters they deleted and dedicated the rest of the added volume to a battery, all would benefit. And for those who simply cannot manage the difference in weight between a 12 oz and 16oz drink, well, to use the vernacular, it sucks to be you. ;-)

Interesting and impressive but my i7 8600h powered Latitude 5491 whops it in the cpu department. That 8th gen 6 core is kicking. What's not is the Nvidia MX130 ddr5 graphics. But still I love this footprint, so getting that much hardware in that small of a device is nothing sort of impressive. Not even the XPS hits this mark, especially in ports. I do like it. It's certainly in my realm. You can even upgrade the memory. Something that is oddly and foolishly becoming rare. Beautiful too, but I would stick to 1080p. Anything else for most people is a waste. Looks nice of course. but kills battery life.

This is almost identical to the Elitebook 840 G5 in terms of looks at least. I'm using that as my company daily driver and I have to say it's veeeery far from a Thinkpad. The build quality is OK-ish, the keyboard is outright horrible, the overall performance is pretty weak (with 16GB RAM and i7-8550U), the screen is a very reflexive matte display that's difficult to see even in office conditions most of the time. The trackpoint is not usable at all and the cutouts on the keyboard make typing an even worse experience.
I'd ditch the whole concept and go with a Thinkpad anytime.
