  • Henryk Wieniawski: Carmen Fantasy
    Sydney Lee, cello
    Ying Li, piano
    Performed on Monday, December 11, 2017
    Field Concert Hall, Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia
    Henryk Wieniawski (1835-1880) was a Polish violinist and composer. A precocious talent, he was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire at age 8. Later, once his solo career was underway, he moved to St. Petersburg at the invitation of Anton Rubinstein, and taught there for 12 years. Following a two-year tour of the United States, Wieniawski took a position as violin professor at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussells in 1875; he died five years later of a heart attack.
    Wieniawiski wrote the Scherzo-Tarantella for violin and piano, op. 16, in 1855. The unusual title of the work suggests the combination of two distinct genres: the jocose symphonic movement of the scherzo, and the Italian folk dance of the tarantella. Wieniawski’s invocation of the latter may have been inspired by Chopin’s Tarantella, op. 43 (1841), which had been transcribed for violin and piano by Karol Lipiński. Originally composed for violin and orchestra, the Scherzo-Tarantella has been transcribed for many different ensembles; the version for cello and piano is among the most often performed.

    Amazing! I love the tempo. The notes are played so clear, it is played fast but not rushed.

      @@robergarcia11 It was composed for the violin and is hard enough on that instrument already. Considering the amount of distance one has to cover in order to play this on cello, it ends up being harder. It is also not a very ergonomically friendly piece on the cello. Hope that clears up the confusion! (Im also a cellist and not a violinist, so if I am missing something important in regards to this piece on the violin feel free to correct me).

      @auspicious93 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robergarcia11 Cello is just a harder instrument in general due to its sheer size. Violinists don't have to shift nearly as much; cellists have to shift often and far.

    Don't get me wrong, she plays wonderfully and is very skilled, but you shouldn't force instruments onto pieces not made for them. This piece was written for a violin, so I think that playing it on a cello does not do it justice. There are many other pieces that were written specifically for cello, and would therefore sound better on one as they are better suited for a cello's acoustics. Idk, maybe I'm just being way too picky, but she did really well!

      I agree. It just doesn't have the pizzazz on cello that it does on violin. This is a bright piece that doesn't fit here

      However - there are some compositions that composers didn’t know they actually wanted the cello. Franck Sonata as a key example
