Alex's Story

From a young age, Alex has always taken an interest in sports, his earliest memory was watching his father play football. As a keen active teenager, Alex participated in various activities such as football and athletics. ‘I played a number of sports but mainly football and athletics. My mum would take me everywhere around London and was also my little league football manager at one point.'
Alex joined Greenhouse Sports 20 years ago as an enthusiastic excited young participant.
At only 15 years old, Alex started volunteering at #teamgreenhouse under the guidance of Coach Tony.
'I started volunteering at Greenhouse then my brother's football team manager quit, so I said I'd look after that until they found another manager. I got a buzz from recruiting kids from my school into the team. Tony said to me during my first volunteering briefing we are here to engage the disengaged. Disengaged from school, family, life and we're going to use sport as a tool to re-engage them. That blew my mind and I wanted to do more of this.'
From this point onwards Alex had a vision. 'When I was 15, I said to coach Tony at Greenhouse Sports that I wanted to change how the sport is delivered and he said, well you need to be the CEO of Sport England to do that. I said deal.’
20 years on and Alex now works for Sport England as National Partnerships Manager.
