  • A one man travelling band from Lousiburgh in County Mayo entertains on the streets of Sligo.
Dan The Street Singer, whose real name is Basil Morahan, attracts an audience on O’Connell Street in Sligo. As Dan slowly moves through the town pulling his custom made cart, people stop to listen to a rendition of the ‘Lake Isle of Innisfree’ and throw a few bob into his basket.
Dan explains that he hopes to bring back an old style of performance that he knew as a child when singers went through the streets as they sang.
I’m doing nothing different to ordinary buskers except that I’m mobile and amplified.
This episode of ‘Ireland’s Eye’ was broadcast on 5 April 1983. The reporter is Tommie Gorman.

The very best equipment street singer that I have ever come across. What a most brilliant singer he is, his playing in tune, I would have loved to see this man in action, he must have made a mint. I bet that he is still singing and playing his songs all around heaven's streets and town and entertaining all the angles and saints

I think it was PJ Halloran in Westport who built the sound system for him.

One of the things I love about the Irish is how much they love music and love listening to it together

I remember back in the days there were more musicians in the streets, seems like these days it's just beggars who do nothing in return for the money they are requesting.

He wasn't trying to pretend he was black, his shtick was being a rambling street singer/hobo. He was a school teacher by day, he done this for fun believe it or not. Fondly remembered by many here in Mayo.

i think he just was dirty maybe to resemble a working man, coal miner.. a pure irish singer singing irish songs. stop seeing racism everywhere.

Les clochards étaient comme ça avant. En sachant, comment ils ont été traité les Irlandais les Anglais à l'époque. Arrêter de déformé les choses.
