    This is what makes Juri's rescue become extremely hard: D-Reaper utilises Juri'd despair to her hate as a fuel & weapon against Takato and others, making herself invincible, and the word "it's all because of fate" just gives Juri haunt since her mother's death and amplified in the death of Leomon. To be frank, I think D-Reaper is one of the most well-designed enemies in the whole franchise.

    • @LovelyCinccino
      @LovelyCinccino ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, when Beelzemon gives her a chance to escape, she’s horribly reminded of what happened to Leomon and the the fact his killer was using his power, causing her to reject his help and almost get him killed. Of course, Jeri regrets what she did immediately and is understandably distraught and guilt stricken when Beelzemon nearly dies due to her, giving the D-Reaper the push it needed to torture her with her cables to make her fall into deeper despair and horror, resulting in its final evolution into the Mother D-Reaper.
      Edited to add: While Leomon’s last words and death were the straw that broke the camel’s back, this scene shows just how troubled Jeri was deep down and how her father didn’t really help her by trying to put up a tough front and claiming that ‘it was fate’ that her mother died, resulting in Jeri being troubled by it for years.
      The worst thing is was that her father was genuinely trying to be a good parent and really did love her, as he was willing to risk his own life to get her back after he learned the D-Reaper had kidnapped her. He just screwed up royally and was forced to see what his poor choice in words had caused.

      Evangelion doesn't have d-reaper

    • @Kageryushin
      @Kageryushin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The D-Reaper was based on the Angels anyway.
      Granted they're neither as talkative nor fueled by actual clinical depression.

    • @infernoconan1
      @infernoconan1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I'd say the D-Reaper was more likely based on Lovecraftian creatures

    • @Kageryushin
      @Kageryushin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      BladeBros64 That's fine, the Angels were too. V:
      A thing can have multiple inspirations, after all, and the most Lovecraftian thing about the D-Reaper was that it was following the "dead but dreaming" motif common to the Great Old Ones. The actual aesthetic of the D-Reaper was definitely based on the Angels foremost. ADR-02's wings were based on Sahaquiel, the Mother D-Reaper's mask had similarities to the mask of Lilith, and the physiques and coloration of the D-Reaper agents were just very Angel-esque in general, frankly. It's not like any of them are exact copies, but there's enough clear similarities (especially given the parallel tones of Evangelion and Tamers, especially during the D-Reaper arc) that the inspiration is pretty clear.
      Hell, if anything, the Angels are more similar to the Great Old Ones in methodology than the D-Reaper is, given that most of them aren't particularly inclined to discuss matters with humans. When the Angels do try to communicate, it's by dawning some sort of disconcerting human form - such as a doppelganger of a main character, for instance. Oh, where have I seen that one before?

    • @infernoconan1
      @infernoconan1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** You're kinda right about the Angels, although I expected to see more similarities between the two when I was watching Evangelion for the first time. ADR 02's wings take that eye sign from Sahaquiel or its atleast very similar. Yeah most of the angels are numb and ADR's as well. The Goalkeeper ADR is obviously similar to Leliel But I'd say the D-Reaper is definitely more Lovecraftian and disturbing than Angels. The Jeri Clone = Nyarlathotep, the Mother D-Reaper resembles the Dunwich Horror and Shub Niggurath (as it spawns more upgraded forms from itself). The D-Reaper grew so massive that it became the eldritch zone itself. Tamers is probably the closest we will ever get to Cthulhu Mythos, in anime. This is the exact reason why Tamers is one of my favorite anime. Tamers > EVA imo.

    Digimon was never for kids
    It was for the "cool" kids

  • @Pink5G
    @Pink5G 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    Digimon is 100% a kid's show, people just don't give kids enough credit in what they can understand and experience. The reason Digimon always stood out like this was because it respected it's audience, it understood that Kids face serious things in their lives and wasn't afraid to shy away from that, from the first two season's continuity dealing with topics like familial death, divorce, and other things kids regularly face, to Tamers and beyond expanding and doing more, the series showed it respected what kids go through even from a really young age. The series grew up with it's audience too, it tried to stay connected with the kids it tried to appeal to even into adult hood. It's 100% a kid's show, but it proves that being a kid's show doesn't mean limiting yourself to brainless entertainment, it knows what kids are capable of.

      Gligar13Vids I was actually just about to say that. The fact that Lain, and Jeri look nearly identical(brown hair/eyes, hairstyle,ponytail) is enough to give it away. • @infernoconan1
      @infernoconan1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** Yep, Konaka is one really weird dude. Have you watched Tamers? What a hell of a ride was that when I was only 8 years old, I still remember that shit! Fun fact is that the episode with Hikari didn't really scare me, most likely because I was much older when I watched it, it still was weird though. If you like this, you should definitely pick up some stuff from H.P.Lovecraft. Konaka said it himself that such works have influenced him.

    • @infernoconan1
      @infernoconan1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** In Croatia, Tamers aired in 2005 with Japanese audio. English dub sucks. German version was great. You can read anything you want from Lovecraft, very few of his short stories are related, and even those are slightly connected. His literature is divided into two frames: The Cthulhu Mythos and the Dream Cycle. Call of Cthulhu is his most famous story (but not necessarily the best one) and is the closest reference to the episode with Hikari. The Cthulhu Mythos stories revolve around the philosophy of the cosmic horror invented by the writer himself. I've seen Ghost Hound (crazy anime), was halfway through the Serial experiments lain and planned to watch Texhnolyze but FMA happened to be in the way so I didn't.

    • @infernoconan1
      @infernoconan1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +August Jensen The voice actors were fine but I didn't like the americanized opening, they got rid of the original soundtracks and edited the script to make it less dark. Eh I didn't drop SEL, I was busy with something else and put it on waiting. That show requires far too much concentration to fully understand it from the first hand. It's an interesting anime, I'll finish it sometime later. Ghost Hound is really awesome, the charm of that show are sound effects, it builds a superb atmosphere. I loved characters, setting and story I recommend you both SEL and Ghost Hound.

    Digimon Tamers was aired under Saban if I remember correctly. It still had some pretty sad and dark moments that make season one of Digimon look like a 4Kids production by comparison. They pretty much kept Jeri's parental issues including her mother's death, and her depression. The ending where the Tamers loose their partners is still there and of course there is still the freaky design of the D-Reaper which as it turns out is based off the Angels from Evangelion.

While not the norm in the Savers Universe, one of the villains discovers a way to permanently kill Digimon and goes on a genocidal murder spree. I can think of at least five Digimon important to the plot who were among the victims. Also, permanent death is the norm in Xros Wars.

    Of course it's not a children show. The concept od the Digital monsters being friends with children is pretty childish. However it contains very dark and deep themes. Some characters are very deep and have very dark and difficult past and Juri here is a very good example. Some children might not understand that and even get scared. This show actually scared me when I was a child.

If it's somewhat creepy to a 17-year old guy... out of context... I have to wonder what was it like to watch this as a kid... it would've been scary, but soooooooo EPIC.

    I loved D-Reaper as a villain, it was just so freakin' alien and weird and fascinating, i thought it was really interesting how it took poor Jeri apart in its attempt to understand humans... it was quite satisfying when she finally snapped out of it all with a little help from adorable little calumon

    It's a kids show and a great one at that. Because it doesn't look down at the intelligence of children thinking they are too dumb to enjoy a good story and teaches that everything isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Polar opposite of Pokemon.

    These are important themes that kids age 8-12 should be learning as they grow up. I don't think it's unsuitable for them. Kids understand a lot more than people give them credit for, and if they can relate their own experiences to a character from a cartoon, it makes them feel their lives are that much more valid. It's important that we don't neuter our kids by raising them in a perfect bubble world, because it can be traumatic when that fantasy bubble pops.

    @Lizardman Batman: The Animated Series was a kid's show, as are most DC shows, and yet it was very dark and over its target audience's head at times. A kid's show doesn't have to be cheesy and cute, even many cartoons in the West have aspects that only adults would really understand.
    Also, Japan has different standards when it comes to children's entertainment.

    That being said though, one can only wonder what kind of person would think of this as suitable for, let's say, the 8-12 year olds. The series as a whole has got some pretty damn terrifying elements to it, as opposed to the ones that came before it... Which is probably why some people claim that this stuff wasn't necessarily written for kids.
