    It is pretty amusing how James frames software as like being relationships. You broke up with a rich control freak abuser who was taking advantage of you and convinced you that you could have no other friends and had nowhere to go. So when you finally broke up, it was tough at first making the transition away from that. Your new friends/love didn't seem as flashy as your ex and you didn't quite understand them at first. Yet they treated you with respect, and each gave you so much more confidence and fulfillment the more you learn about them. Surprisingly wholesome story framing in the end.

    Your statements on Linux sparking that forgotten passion is SO accurate.
    I was instantly taken back to my bedroom at like 10 with my first '9X frankenputer, just fucking around and learning something new every day.
    It was so familiar and yet new with so much passion and just... fucking good community driven ideas and design behind everything that I've been dailying it ever since.
    And the kicker? Everything is lighter, faster, snappier and often... straight up games just run better thanks to Proton and the community ProtonUp project.
    It reignited why I got into computers decades ago and why to this day I still work on them.
    Shits fun.

      you can always try in a VM at first, it'll be slower, but good enough to figure things out with zero risk to break anything
      then you can boot a liveusb to try how it feels to run normally (usb will limit the speed significantly, but it'll be quite OK), most useful in order to figure out if you need extra drivers, and what drivers
      and then, you can do a full-on install, you can also look into dualbooting, so you can use windows if you need or want, but can use linux for most things (there are some games and proprietary software that don't like to work in wine/proton very well)

    • @Robotta
      @Robotta วันที่ผ่านมา

      For starters I recommend either Linux Mint or Bazzite. They are both popular, widely documented, and include Nvidia drivers preinstalled by default
      Also, I say for starters, but there's nothing wrong in keeping using the same distro for years. I say this because some people interested in Linux want to use the popular, "real Linux distros" like Arch, but it's completely valid to use "easy" distros like the ones I mentioned. Use what works for you 👍

But research yourself and one advice, do not take suggestions from articles, like "10 linux distributions for gaming", they are not so good source of information.

    I feel like you sent probably the best message that someone can send to artists: "I have quit Adobe. I used their products for over a decade, but still decided to quit it. It wasn't easy. It took time and effort to re-adjust and learn new tools, but it is possible and the current video is a proof. I also show you that other tools have their own pros and may make your content creation easier in a long run. Switching from toxic software to a better software is hard and requires effort. Will you put this effort towards the better long-term future for yourself or do nothing and stick to the toxic software that requires you to pay money for it to only get worse? It's up to you to decide."

    Linux is the best experience I've ever had on a computer. Yes, it takes time to learn, but once you're set up, you gain time every single day with more stability, less annoyances, no planned obsolescence... I've been editing (very basic) videos for 7 years on Linux. Wouldn't change back to Windows or macOS for all the money in the world !

I'm not sure I can give you good sources for research, because a lot of what I use require at least a tiny bit of working familiarity with at the vocabulary of Linux to get the most out of. Linux Mint is often considered (and I agree) to be the easiest starting point, giving an experience very similar to some versions of Windows, with about as good of stability. Its forums are also a useful resource for solving a lot of simple issues.

Before I realized it, it became my primary operating system. I grew up with XP and I have fond memories of it. With 10 I did not have the same joy I had with XP. With Linux, I am having the fun that was lost. All the customization you can do with Linux, particularly visual, Microsoft had a missed opportunity with Windows.

      The best thing is, once enough people switch to Linux, companies will follow the money, so we might see Adobe attempting to support Linux in future, which in turn frees more people from Windows, which then allows them to experience the main selling points of less greedy software alternatives, which can make them more willing to switch off of programs such as Adobe too, which then gives more resources to those alternatives, which makes those alternatives even better. We've seen it with Blender, we've seen it with gaming on Linux in a way, open source is simply a positive feedback loop for everybody involved. It got outran by for-profit giants like Microsoft but simply due to its nature it will never fully lose the momentum and I am optimistically believing that long term what benefits the most people is going to win.

The things you get out of them will never be the goal, making money off of you is. And the more trapped you are, the more you feel like an alternative is inaccessible or too much of a "hassle", the more they can shift their focus to capitalizing off of you, invading your privacy, and using you instead of the other way around, because they know you won't do anything about it.

      Question though: I’m an iPhone guy and I have a windows OS on my PC, but I’m super unfamiliar with windows, only just dipping my balls in, should I try Linux ? I’ve heard… mixed takes on it, but if I’m already learning a new tech platform, do you think Linux is worth? And if so, how/where would you recommend researching Linux and how to use?

    • @slopmaster_
      @slopmaster_ วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Firefight_ Yes, give Mint a try on a USB stick. If you're an Apple/macOS guy in general too, Linux might feel more familiar to you under the hood than Windows does, both are based on BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), Linux uses similar file paths but much simplified compared to BSD (Your installed programs are in /bin/ instead of /usr/pkg/bin compared to BSD). For example, there exists a filesystem you can use that's similar to HFS+ called btrfs (better fs) with built in features to support snapshot restoration like Apple's Time Machine (for example, using the program Timeshift). And the Terminal on Linux uses an upgraded version of the shell used on macOS called sh (Thompson Shell) which on Linux is called bash (Bourne Again Shell) by default that shares all the commands you might have used on macOS.
      The file paths are also similar, but macOS uses self-contained files for programs called DMG files, but on Linux there are things called AppImage and Flatpak files that function in a very similar way, they allow you to run Linux programs in a way that does not require you to be on a specific distro (distribution) or have specific software library versions (like a program that only works with Python 3-12 if your distro only officially supports Python 3-10).
      The reason there exists so many different Linux distributions for different purposes is because they pop up in a similar way to 10 people trying to decide on what pizza toppings to order. Instead, every person orders their entirely own pizza with what they want on it, instead of settling for a margherita to try and please everyone. It's just a way to give different types of people different default options for different usecases, such as someone wanting something only for gaming, and someone else wanting something that is ready to be used as a safe webserver, or to be installed on their router to replace the crappy software that comes on it.
      Compared to Windows though, a lot of distros ship with desktop environments (large collections of software that include things like themes, icons, a settings panel, look and feel of the desktop basically) that are in different ways similar to Windows XP, 7, 10, 11, or even various versions of macOS, including software that mimics Finder.
      If you don't like Mint, I recommend trying these for on for size:
      Fedora, or Fedora Atomic (Atomic means that it comes in a full version that completely gets wiped and replaced on updates, of course ignoring your own user files in your /home/ directory, to provide a much more stable and tinker-free environment where you can immediately revert to the last version if something goes wrong)
      openSUSE Tumbleweed (similar to Fedora, more tinker-heavy and "power user" if you like that sort of thing, but comes with all the newest drivers etc if you have very new hardware, I recommend looking up an installation text or video guide for this)
      Ubuntu or variants like Kubuntu (a good choice for beginners if you're mainly planning on using Flatpak or Snap, which are like those DMG files on macOS)
      There are also some convenient programs that help with using commands in the terminal if you need to, for example tldr (tealdeer) is a program that will give you a tldr of how to do common things, which I highly recommend
      For example:
      tldr tar
      ...
      E[x]tract a (compressed) archive [f]ile into the target directory:
      tar xf path/to/source.tar[.gz|.bz2|.xz] --directory=path/to/directory
      ...

      @@Firefight_ I'd say if you're unfamiliar with windows, it's an upside for learning linux since they are quite different, and better have a grasp on something while not having any experience based preferences, so I'd say absolutely go for it! I don't have any specific place to send you for your linux journey other than just searching youtube videos about linux. Maybe start by searching linux tutorials, and linux distro guide. Linux is pretty much ready for creative, office and gaming stuff with steam at least.
