    Daryl is a class act. His playing speaks for itself, but if you get the chance to meet the man, he’s the real deal. Zero ego. Total professional. Genuine human being with a solid head on his shoulders. It’s no wonder why Phil Collins has him on all of his albums and brings him on every tour.

      You don't seem to get it. No one has said Daryl is a bad guitarist. We all know he is an excellent performer. The whole point is, his own particular rendition of Firth of Fifth is terrible. Other than that, He's great. You see, Firth of Fifth should be played the way it was originally conceived, with no room for speed riffs and stuff like that. You don't ruin a classical painting from the rennaissance by spraying it with Graffitti just because you think you are an awesome graffitti artist.

    • @tpmbe
      @tpmbe 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this particular clip is not great . agree with you there. I do get it

    • @tomfalcone7170
      @tomfalcone7170 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      He has other recordings of Firth of Fifth that are much better. This one has the most nods to Hackett and, because of this, it sounds a bit forced. Also, the renaissance painting comparison doesn't work here, because music is an interpreted art. Something like progressive rock is heavily influence by the performer. Prog, at its core, is blues derived, jazz influenced, and baroque influenced-all of which are improvisational to some degree. Each live performance will respectively yield greatly different results. This is especially evident in groups of the Canterbury scene, which tend to be jazzier. Want to complain about spray-painting over the Mona Lisa? Check out any of Steve Hackett's Bach renditions.
      Maybe the Renaissance reference was a projection of your untold desire for Stuermer's sweet solo on the Jean-Luc Ponty track of the same name....

    I first heard Daryl back in '79, when he was playing with Ponty. Then I wondered where he went because Ponty changed guitar players every album. I only just found out that he'd been Genesis' longest reigning guitarist a few months ago (though I'd been a Genesis fan, I didn't know who was playing guitar for them). He's definitely one of the best players out there in my book, being a player myself.

    Firth of Fifth lends itself very well to having a string section in support and so was well received.
    Squonk on the other hand was a surprise, as I would never have thought that I would have liked it with the Orchestra, what with it being one of the closest things that Genesis ever did in the direction of hard rock.

    The point is that people who love this music want to play it and interpret it in their own way. I think Daryl's version of the guitar solo in Firth of Fifth is good but I do prefer Steve's original simpler and more thoughtful solo. They just have 2 very different styles but the strength of the band is that they can let Daryl rip in the way he wants.

    Ah, yes; cue the “Daryl’s no Steve, he can’t play the F of F solo” complaints. You can set your watch to it. I love Steve too; better than I love Daryl. But if there ever was a subject that the demands a STFU response, this one is certainly it. It’s tiresome. Give the guy a break. He’s a phenomenal guitarist. He’s been touring with Genesis since 1978. I was fortunate enough to see him that year and he was great. Is he better than Steve? Maybe not, but he’s damn good and he does it in his own style. Remember, Steve left Genesis, they didn’t throw him out. Every time someone complains about Daryl it’s as if they’re insinuating that he pushed Steve out of the band or something. The only “complaint” I have with this video is the title. It may be splitting hairs but it’s really Firth of Fifth and Los Endos, not Squonk. Yes, Los Endos is a recapitulation of parts of Squonk, but the song they’re playing in this video is really Los Endos.

      While Daryl is criticised for being a jazz guitarrist.

      People don't like Daryl just because he wasn't a member of the classic line up. That's why. Prog fans don't listen to music, they listen to line ups.

    Music is almost totally subjective. I actually like Daryl's playing here. He is a great guitarist and has done some interesting and excellent solos over the years on Phil's solo stuff as well as with Genesis. I think he is unfairly maligned by the same crew who can't get over Peter leaving Genesis 45 years ago.

      Im unaware that this performance has anything to do with Genesis, past or present. Daryl was a hired hand, from what I remember........

      @@artrandy Daryl was hired by mike because Mike needed a bass player and a guitarist and after that they became informal band members. See your talkin outta your ass again which isn’t good.

    I like him, yes he’s a very accomplished artist buuut, he just embellishes the solo’s a bit too much for my taste (west coast candy rock) but if Genesis was happy with him?

    It's a nice version, guys. Just a nice version. Stop all that moaning about "Steve was so much good" and enjoy a different approach to an old great tune. (said by a guitar player who spent good deal of his youth trying to mimic Steve's stuff)

      La boîte en verre empêche les vibrations des autres instruments d'utiliser les tambours comme planches sonores. Vous vous retrouvez avec un son plus propre. De plus, les batteurs sont souvent «vaguement articulés» et le protègent s'il devient fou.

    If someone smears dog excrement on your front door, do you leave it? Well, I won’t. Criticize all you wish. You will find other comments to some of the videos that are negative, but I did not remove them. I only take out the obscene flame attacks, or those that claim to be from Daryl and are not.
