my 1st car was a 73 coupe. Long gone but 22 years later I still miss it. I dont know what it is but an old school set of slots looks absolutely badass on these old cars.
Honestly, you've got a pretty good base to start from. I say put a high duration cam, some headers, and a 4-barrel swap are the way to go. Also an interesting tid-bit is the 1973 302 is a C-code engine, meaning you can put bigger heads on it like a 351 Cleveland. I did it to mine and it really brings the original engine to life. Also doing a coil over conversion makes the steering a breeze. A 5-speed and a 3:55 gear ratio also couldn't hurt anything. As for paint and body, I'd remove the spoiler on the trunk, add a chin spoiler, black out the grill, paint it a metallic dark blue, and give it correct stripping in pearl white. As for rims, some 17inch 5-spokes in chrome or brushed finish. Interior wise, I think the interior on these years aren't bad. Maybe swapping the gauge lights for LEDs and having custom upholstered seats to look like the originals, but have the support of a modern racing bucket, similar to a recaro or bride seat. Also another thing you could do is get a working ram-air set up for the hood. A place called Mustang's Unlimited sells them, it would be a cool way to have a cold air intake. Good luck though, can't wait to see what you do with it.

The Ranch Wagon is now owned by a local fire fighter and he and his family daily drive it and love it. The Maverick is gone and this Mustang is all I have left so I can focus 100% on it.

Man, I kept seeing this car in the background of your videos and had to come check it out. That '72/'73 body style is my absolute favorite and would be my go to for sure if I got another vehicle.
I have no experience and bought myself a 54 ford mainline last year after my 20th birthday, anything I try to do is met with problem after problem, just spent about a week changing the rear end from stock to a 9 inch. I love watching your build up and it inspires many ideas I just need the money! I know I'm a little late to the show -.-
Love the ride! I'm sure that a 5.0 Coyote would liven up the 0-60 (and they're starting to become available). Leave the body as-is, it's a time capsule!!! I'll enjoy following this build for sure!
It may be a bit outlandish, but a Coyote 5.0 would be awesome in that thing! I'd start by making it a little more agile than it is, some coilovers, 5 speed, and an LSD (as someone else suggested) would be a nice addition. Can't wait to see what comes of this!
Well, I was bummed to see the end of the Maverick build... but this Mustang is one I can surely get behind. Very Cool Car Jason. I think if it were me I'd build it in the Resto-Mod style. Make the body and interior look close to stock but do up the engine, tranny, rear end and suspension. That 302 isn't a bad place to start if you want to keep that engine. Good Luck Jason. It's too bad you got rid of the Mav because it was nice to see a different project. I have a 1969 Mustang Mach 1. One of the first projects I did to it was replace the front suspension. It drove like crap and all of the bushings were rotten. I haven't worked on the rear suspension yet but that will be a future project. I need to drop it's engine which is a 351C. I was going to go 460, but after adding up the cost and weight gain, I decided to stay with a 351ci engine and a 5spd trans.

I enjoy driving my so-so condition 1965 Mustang coupe as a daily driver 22 miles round trip to work everyday; even regardless of the weather; hot with no AC, cold, rain, snow even! I am slowly fixing it up a bit and improving it though. Enjoying your videos so far. Would love to do the coil over upgrade but cost too much for now. ~ Norm in Pennsylvania.
I like this as well.....keep it super simple. Just spend your money on go fast pieces,gut the interior and redo it with sound deadening a carpet kit and aluminum panels.... make sure the body is reasonably straight and just plastikote it.

This is ultimately your choice, but I would get the nyan cat off the fan shroud as soon as possible. it's the opposite of the old school badass-ness that your project mustang portrays, haha. Also, I love how you enjoy every little quirk and shortcoming of the old chassis while acknowledging that it can be improved - sounds just like what I'd do, haha. Glasspacks are awesome. Keep up the great work
Suggestion: 351 Cleveland. Port plates and Air Gap duel plane. :) 5-Speed out of a newer Stang. 9" Rear with some 3.91's to go with that overdrive :) My Grabber Maverick has 3.70's in the rear and with the T-5's .68 OD it does about 2500 RPM at 70 MPH.
Make it safe first. Get some decent shocks on it and make sure the brakes are up to par. Once you have that sorted you can start replacing the ball joints, tie rod ends and changing all the rotten bushings out for polyurethane ones that are cheap and easily acquired. All in you are probably less than $500 in parts to get this baseline. You will then have a feel for the car's true nature and make better decisions about how you want to move forward with the project.

A heidts or TCI K frame & rear suspension W/coil overs. 17" wheels with good tires. A curry rear (the 8.8 works just fine) will cure the one wheel peel. I would go for a 4 bolt main Windsor. There's infinite cheap power parts. A TKO 5. That cures the suspension & drivetrain.
How about making it safe and giving it tight handling with some suspension work? Starting with ball joints, tie rod ends, spring and shock upgrades, after market swaybars, etc. or if you want to trick it out maybe a complete after market suspension>
I just came across the Maverick series of videos and watched the set. Too bad to see it go. I'll share some thoughts on the Mustang. I must agree with what abesc2 posted below. Start by bringing the car back to a baseline with shocks, brakes and front end wear parts. Then STANCE!!! Meaning wheels, tires and altitude (not a typo). I would definitely pursue one of the bolt-in cross member / coilover kits for the front. Hopefully, one with R&P. If not, then remove the last of the looseness by installing a good rebuilt steering box. (While you're at it, and have a chance, "shave" the shock towers to allow for future engine swaps.) For cost and simplicity in the short term, install a set of the de-arched composite mono-leaf spring sets in the rear. Eventually consider a coilover conversion here as well. I'm particularly disposed toward the track arm style myself. There are plenty of viable engine/trans combos to consider down the road, but drive it with the 302, as is, for now. That said, the quickest power train performance upgrade I would suggest would be a set of 3.73's and an AOD. I bet this entire package can be ssembled for under $5k. Hope you find these suggestions helpful.
I like the mustang, id definitely do the suspension parts first, get it sitting and handling right. Once that is near done then i would start considering its purpose and decide on an automatic or manual transmission.
Great question... this car found me actually. I owned a daily driver but kind of ratty 70 maverick at the time and a young dude that owned this thing wanted to trade because he actually wanted a slightly smaller car with a straight 6 engine. So we traded and the rest is history... I haven't talked to the guy in years... hope he and the maverick are good.
Make it into a road carver. Start with your chassis and suspension. And of course the biggest breaks that will fit your set up. Like 20 inch rear wheels with 19 in the front. Just go to Shelby Automotive and look at what they are doing with the GT350. I am extremely happy with what they did with mine. Drop in a 5.0 modular engine and you can develop up to 700 hp without touching the bottom end. And still have great reliability. But start from the back and work your way up to the front.
Any news? I've been thinking about this a bit. I still think a high reving small block is the go. Are you familiar with the 'aussie' v8? 302 clevo heads on windsor block. They're dirt cheap on ebay Australia. I can get a set and send them to you if you like?
Off road style. A Baja Mustang. That would be unique and bitchin'. I would not go overboard and try to install 4x4 in the beginning, but some rally lights and a slight lift with dirt tires and a high compression rebuild. Yeah that would be sick. A poor man's Rally Fighter if you will.
Be sure to check out what Griggs Racing offers as well as Total Control Products. Also Detroit Speed has a fairly new line for Mustangs. Will definitely follow this project, but what happened to the Wagon? Still got the 3rd gen Camaro?
Nope. Posi rear end first. You need the wheels to spin at the same speed in order to have any fun. Then manual, and then power for the engine. (does it have disc brakes yet? That should be done 1st/2nd no matter what.) At least that is what I would do.
Toss those baby block engines and stuff a 429/460 BBF in there with a T56 manual transmission. A set of the aluminum AR CJ heads and a Weiand Stealth intake will both provide some power and remove some weight off the front end. Give it some power to match those Mach I decals. Replace that one legger with a Detroit Locker in a 9" or 8.8 rear end. Then go to work on brakes and suspension.....or maybe do the brakes first. ;) P.S. Take that girly nyan cat off the shroud.

Go on Craigslist buy a car from like 1960-79 and start taking it apart junkyard parts will help if you don't want to spend a lot and the Internet will be your instruction manual
autoedit , get a 71 to 73 mustang. then find a 75 to 79 Granada and use it as a parts car. it is much cheaper and you can up grade to power disk brakes without modification if the Mustang did not come with it.
the car is a keeper put upgrades turbo anc stuff but im working on my 1973 theres no video on youtube that shows how to change the ignition switch maybe make a video
i'd would build a street/track car me personally i love sleeper cars. Although i don't know if you could consider a 73 mustang with a 302 a sleeper but to each his own.if it was my car id get the interior ie carpet,headliner,door panels,etc also i love the look of aluminum, Beef up the motor maybe new intake,carb,cam,maybe head work and a bitchen exhaust, depending on the stock axle ratio maybe new gears and a welded diff,locker,posi whatever works, and id get rid of all that mach 1 decals and stupid spoiler and either do a simple and cheap but still nice paint job or leave as is after decal removal and enjoy the shit out of it at the track.strip or to work and some people may not wanna drive a loud ass muscle car with no interior to work everyday but i see no problem with it i ride a bike with a straight pipe exhaust every day and would love to have a car that i just shitely described
Mach 1 clone, with pro-touring suspension. Not a full competition suspension just some cheap, easy bolt on stuff. Some good disc brakes all around, you don't need performance brakes on a daily driver and you don't want hard competition suspension.

Rebuild the suspension & steering with stuff from Opentracker/Streetortrack, bigger swaybars, Shelby Drop it, 17s withsome sticky rubber and look out!

I'd personally say go the full pro touring idea, fat tires, low down stance, a bit trackable but not stupidly so.

i'd would build a street/track car me personally i love sleeper cars. Although i don't know if you could consider a 73 mustang with a 302 a sleeper but to each his own.if it was my car id get the interior ie carpet,headliner,door panels,etc also i love the look of aluminum, Beef up the motor maybe new intake,carb,cam,maybe head work and a bitchen exhaust, depending on the stock axle ratio maybe new gears and a welded diff,locker,posi whatever works, and id get rid of all that mach 1 decals and stupid spoiler and either do a simple and cheap but still nice paint job or leave as is after decal removal and enjoy the shit out of it at the track.strip or to work and some people may not wanna drive a loud ass muscle car with no interior to work everyday but i see no problem with it i ride a bike with a straight pipe exhaust every day and would love to have a car that i just shitely described

Mach 1 clone, with pro-touring suspension. Not a full competition suspension just some cheap, easy bolt on stuff.
Some good disc brakes all around, you don't need performance brakes on a daily driver and you don't want hard competition suspension.
