  • In 1988 Bandai released an OVA (original video animation) based on Masamune Shirow's Appleseed manga. It was animated partly by Gainax, a studio of fans-turned-pro that debuted with Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise and later created Aim for the Top! Gunbuster and Neon Genesis Evangelion. The members of Gainax also had a history of making live-action fan films. Using this experience, Gainax staff (in particular Takami Akai, Hiroyuki Yamaga, and Hideaki Anno) created a three-minute promotional video for the Appleseed OVA called the Appleseed Special Prologue. The Appleseed OVA (including the Special Prologue!) is available on Blu-ray from Discotek Media.

I considered myself a huge Appleseed (manga / comic) fan, but I never knew about this live-action. Mind blown

I only saw the latest anime of it, but just today the live action! That was an awesome cosplay for both of them!

The 80s and 90s really was an interesting time for anime and Toku.

Love the yellow captions, really thematically fits the old school anime vibe.

That 80s otaku-ness is still alive in Anno's gojira and ultraman movies🎬

Wow thanks for this so much! Almost ten years ago I uploaded the live action clip to TH-cam. As far as this platform goes I was the first to do it. It was a high school project in which we were tasked to use the internet to learn more about something that interested us. I had purchased a bootleg Appleseed OVA DVD as a kid and was fascinated by the live action clip. I didn't know anything about it and I thought if I uploaded it to TH-cam maybe someone out there could shed some light as to what this whole project was about. I had tried my best to learn about those involved with it but didn't get very far. I remember some blog post lost to time gave some scant information one such tidbit labeled Katrina Casey as a former US Servicewoman turned model. At least being a model seems to be consistent in her background and perhaps serving in the military was what brought her to Japan in the first place. Anyway, this was thoroughly enjoyable to watch because even all these years later my interest in this clip never waned. Thanks again and I definitely will be subscribing to you.

Woah! Wasn’t expecting to see Zimmerit on TH-cam! I’ve always loved your site!
This was a cool, informative video! I’ve loved this Appleseed promo ever since I saw it. And finding out that it was the ol Daicon crew behind it has made my day.(guess I just never researched it that well. 😅)
I found that dragon quest video fantasia thing a while back and I’m waiting for a chance to share it with some fellow dragon quest nerds. I never considered how horrifying the slimes might look in reality. But I LOVE it.

I would love an episode about 80s Japanese indie sci-fi films a la Red Spectacles, Gunhead, Burst City and the like.

The Appleseed OVA has a killer score and soundtrack. Alot of the tracks in the anime are not on the soundtrack. Some of the tracks have been stuck in my head since the 90s. They are impossible to find. I've been searching since the AOL dialup days lol

Great coverage- I actually was just retiming some subtitle scripts a few days ago and found that the second version LD release (BELL-640) has this video on the end of it after the credits! Nice to hear the backstory for the LA video.

Always wondered what Gainax's connection with the Princess Maker series was. Cool tidbit about how it helped keep the lights on at Gainax in the early 90s.

My friend recommended me Appleseed a while ago, which now that I've watched this video, I really want to watch the OVA series. I'm quite surprised the animation, and the live action trailer, involves people from Gainax (but it makes sense that they do this to make ends meet as a company). Also, I didn't know that an Appleseed live action promo existed until now (gonna go watch it), and it's just so inspiring to see people, even professionals in their fields, take on little films with technological and budget limitations, which is not something we see often today (unless I'm wrong).
Love the video you made and I'm looking forward for more!

Loved the history lesson, my only critique is if the content is 4:3 why bother adding a distracting animated widescreen bezel for the 4:3 parts? Just make the whole video in the format and embrace it.

The dub for the Appleseed OVA is really bad. They use the weirdest profanity you’ll ever hear, and they mispronounce Briareos’ name in the cringiest way possible. It’s like they hired an amateur translator for the script.

1994 i bought Appleseed sub VHS hardshell used $10 comics unlimited gardengrove CA the comic store had a tiny anime corner. animexpo 1996 i met hideaki anno & kenichi sonoda possibly i think sonoda is my favorite character designer i have photos is was magical i was 17 years old. p.s. i can understand that Appleseed didn't have the biggest budget but certain sceans had great animation or stand still animation obsessed.
