This came together so nicely man. A seriously underrated channel.
Ninja Scroll is Kawajiri's magnum opus and I'm still waiting for a true sequel to this legendary film!
Ninja Scroll has always been my gold standard for anime. There is a trailer for Ninja Scroll 2 but it never was released. I think they have had problems with funding.
Yoshiaki Kawajiri: The Platinum Age of Animation
My favourite style in animation ever. He is an absolute master of the craft. Thank you for this man :)
He captures the vibe of 80s anime very well. The GOAT?
I did a video many years ago called A visual Memoir of Yoshiaki Kawajiri were I compiled all his cinematic techniques into one video. It took and me 6 months to edit it, I remember just waking up and sleeping and eating then editing was like a full time job. Thank you for making this video
Took me about 4 months to finish this one

When Old Heads like me say that the Golden Age anime is long since over...it's cause we know we will never get Iconic work like this. We'll get some good work...but NEVER anything on this level...sadly.
EXACTLY!!!
I feel that.
I'm not even an old head but I agree with that statement. Today's anime just doesn't hit the same.,
Yoshiaki Kawajiri is a legend. Dude made a Highlander movie for his last film as a director. It is the ONLY film sequel to live up to the original. Now THAT is what I call a Mic Drop.
I loved his take on Highlander
🫳🏿🎤
Hideyuki kikuchi the goat we wouldn’t have castlevania without him
I'm still hoping that the people behind Castlevania will make a Berserk adaptation
I think Kawajiri's Highlander movie is pretty underrated too
Thanks for doing this. Kawajiri is a legend.
an absolute at master at the use of colour, storyboarding action sequences and "limited" animation
Wicked city is so awesome, in 1993 my first Exposure to adult Anime was Fist of the North star. Then Ninja scroll, wicked city and Vampire Hunter D. No one in my middle school or high school watched Anime. I graduated in 2000 now Anime is commonplace, it would have been cool to have people that shared my interests.
Same here, it was kind of hard to yalk about that stuff sometimes too, very niche. The darker stuff would shock many, especially for that era of film.
Ahhh man, that was such a banger of an AMV. Cradle covering the best Iron Maiden song, and played over Ninja Scroll!? There was another awesome one from back in the day that played AFI (covering Halloween by the Misfits) played over Hellsing Ultimate. hahaha good stuff, dude.
My longest video yet!
Really cool stuff my dude! Keep it up 👏
Just what I needed. Had a rough week. So hearing about one of my favorite animation directors lifts my spirit
Great video man
Awesome video and I hope to see more like it soon
For anyone interested. On my channel , I have a massive collection of all Yoshiaki Kwajiri's techniques on here. This video inspired me to dig it up, it's called a Yoshiaki Kwajiri' Visual Memoir,
Thank u for all the moralizing.. that's what I needed.. definitely justified this clip show description of significant works of art that already existed for 30 years... it really added to the cannon and justified it's existence... great job. The future for art is bright.
Great video! These movies left a mark on me as a kid and I often wondered eho put them together. Think I'll have to get Vampire Hunter D a rewatch. It's been decades. Thanks!
I feel everyone saw Ninja Scroll when they were way too young for it and had their parent walk in on them.
Remember.watching Wicked City for the first time in the summer of 1996 on the Sci-fi channel after Midnight as a teenager and kinda shocked me.with it scenes as I never seen anything like it in a cartoon or manga at the time lol. I'm huge fan of his work.and Madhouse as I really there story's, art style and animation especially in the 80s and 90s.

“Ninja Scroll is hypermasculine” damn, this is my favorite anime movie ever 💀 I always thought Kagero was good depiction of a girl that’s gone through some serious shit, and acts tough as a shield. I found it relatable and I cried when she died. Also is just Vampire Hunter D 🤌🏻✨
Not weird. We're all gonna have different reactions and interpretations to the media we watch! 👍
@@AimbyFrame Yeah no, you're just an SJW (the cringy dislclaimer says it all) and love throwing around typical buzzwords and/or you read/watched some 3rd rate anime critique where someone said "hypermasculine" and you thought it sounded like such a witty observation you had to parrot it.
You wouldn't call the most shoujo anime ever (containing only female characters) "hyperfeminine"., let alone sexist. Your view is shaped by other people/the zeitgeist.
@@candide1065 "Throwing Buzzwords" as he proceeds to throw buzzwords 💀
@@AimbyFrame So you don't have any arguments and admit it?
You're probably from an older generation. Zoomers and younger millennials are more..."delicate" so they would see it as hyper masculine. To us Gen Xers this was just a badass memorable banger of a movie that you remember for decades and talk about. Modern anime lost any edge or grit. It's all boring for folks like me.
I saw BLOODLUST three times on the big screen in its initial release. That was in less than a week.
Well done! I subscribed! :) Kawajiri rocks.
Wish u mentioned that Clown from Vampire Hunter D. Even tho he wasn't in the movie long he was dope with that shadow ability.
Ooooo he was behind a two of my favs 🔥🔥🔥 !!! Still need to watch wicked city tho havent seen that one
Yoshiaki Kawajiri is legendary anime director of all time
Blows away the so called disney comedians and m she u cinematic clowns of Hollywood
Kawajiri is my favorite anime Director. Great tribute to one of the grandmasters of the craft
Wicked City, Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust are amazing and pure classics.
Everything this man touches is a masterpiece. My favourite film director.
Wicked City was the second anime I saw as a kid, right after Sailor Moon. Needless to say, I was hooked!
P.S. Ninja Scroll is a true masterpiece.
The thing about Kawajiri's work is that it mixes truly sublime beauty with the utterly repellent hideousness. I really love his work and wish he'd do a more mature work that toned down some of the more over-the-top gratuitous aspects of his oeuvre.
That he couldn't get funding for Ninja Scroll 2, doesn't direct anymore, and became relegated to working in the industry as a storyboarder is a fucking tragedy. The current anime industry just can't accommodate him anymore.
Modern anime is too weak for his aesthetics, and so are the zoomer anime fans. They would have an anxiety attack and hyperventilate if they saw Kawajiri's work. It's got to be an iseki story with cute waifus with questionable ages.
Ive been waiting my whole life for a Ninja Scrolls video game. It would be the ultimate boss rush game
Vampire Hunter D such a great anime it baffles me why more hasn't been done with it.
One of the greatest stylists in the art world.
We need a another kawajiri film !!!
he made that one Highlander anime also. I watched it thinking it was going to be dull (I watched the old highlander show when I was a kid...like...4 times and thought it was boring) but I really liked his adaptation of it, despite my positive bias to kawajiri and his animators.
Kawajiri is GOAT everything he has made is top-tier
I'm a little mad that you're right about Ninja Scroll. The relationship is forced while the enemies are unique and lead to an awesome boss fight that leaves you with a need to know more. Vampire Hunter D is just an amazing evolution of animation for Kawajiri that I cant help but rewatch every year. D along with every monster and side character is just amazing to watch. I've read the manga but the movie is still a 10X better with how well Kawajiri created these characters.
I didn't think it was that forced. It must be a cultural thing, because in Asian societies that's exactly how women are expected to act. I thought it was poetic how the old dude set them up to screw each others' brains out but in reality Jubei chose not to because he viewed her as a fellow human rather than a tool to be used. That gets overlooked because Westerners live in a gay ass society that laughs at everything that's manly.
He's the GOAT for Anime
This man should have done Edgerunners. His style fits the ACTUAL Cyberpunk TTRPG world, and by extension the game. I did not like Edgerunners, it was too cute, juvenile, humorous, to "modern anime". Cyberpunk doesn't really have cute, and deals with ADULTS, not characters that are supposed to be adults but look like kids, ALL of them. Yoshiaki Kawajiri's characters look like serious adults. Cyberpunk isn't very humorous either, neither the TTRPG or the videogame, at most it has adult dry humor but none of this Zoomer anime crap. I think it was successful because it appealed to juvenile aesthetic taste of younger millennials and zoomers, but it was a VERY poor representation of true Cyberpunk, which is a tragedy when you realized Yoshiaki Kawajiri did one of the short films in The Animatrix, he was VERY qualified for Edgerunners, which sadly didn't have any edge.
Mushizo controls hornets not bees!
I love all of these... But how could you miss Cyber City Oedo, which Mad House also did?
I was focusing on the other three films, but there was a line I cut out for time at the end of the Wicked City part, were I mentioned him directing other features after Demon City Shinjuku.
More longer videos ❤
Got to figure out how to get them finished faster though. One video every 4 months is not gonna work 😭
Yoshiaka-dono, please, direct a movie adaptation of Shigurui, kurosai!
I love cyber city oedo 808. It never gets any recognition. To me, only ninja scroll is better out of his work.
Can you do a full review of each Kawajiri movie? You could call it a Kawajiri-Thon.
I could actually. Definitely will think about it. Would you prefer long for style of videos or short form for that?
@@AimbyFrame I like long videos.
Ninja Scroll had the first Gay Characters I can remember from Anime Gemma and the guy with the electric wires.
Ninja scroll is deceptively simple it’s actually full of nuance. For example jubei is hopelessly out classed and only wins by luck in almost all encounters accept but the last battle.
Also all the dubs are horrendous in the video. Makes for good comedy tho.
His character designs especially the women owe a lot of 80s artist Peter Nagel.
Anime, much like movies and music, has lost a lot of its magic. There are obviously certain exceptions.
this is a comment :D good job
This is a reply :) thank you
But can we do this type of film again but without the sexies bullshit but keep the gore and grit with some of the cheesecake? I miss late 80's - 90's anime.
Don't be a queer, the sexy scenes stay
What is "sexies", you clown? Is the anime to sexy for you?
I didn't appreciate your modern critique of Wicked City, you need to take off your 21st century glasses to review art from another time. The sex, violence, perverted characters, complete lack of correctness and creative freedom are some of the ingredients that made those decades unique.
