If you are looking for water resistant sunscreens Japanese Beauty is the place to go ^^ Biore, Skin Aqua, Anessa, Nivea Japan are just few of the brands that offer multiple different types of water resistant sunscreens.
@@jothikasreeA i have normal to oily skin (not super oily but definitely producing oils and need to blot thorough the day) and I live in Japan where humidity is between 85-95% during summer and I like these products.
honestly a small sunscreen like the Skin Aqua would be great to put in your bag for reapplication. Since it's cheap you could just throw one in every bag and always have something to reapply while you're out. I will say that I usually see the Skin Aqua on Stylevana for 5-8 USD
I love that you put a close-up of the entire ingredient lists because I pause the video and I check if it suits me because my skin reacts to lavender/lavendula even on my hands. I know Koreans and Japaneses like to put it in their products because it has its own skin benefits so I always have to pay attention to that when I buy an Asian product.
the best waterproof sunscreens are in my opinion Japanese and European formulas! Evy Technology is my holy grail for sports, hiking and swimming, and Biore UV Aqua Rich Aqua Protect Lotion is my favourite for everyday wear when i'm going for brisk walks. they're both also incredibly cosmetically elegant and work so well under makeup!
Thank you so much for your recos! I am a biker who lives in a tropical country and I’m always on the lookout for Asian sunscreens that are good for sports.
Almost all the Japanese sunscreens are waterproof, but not really Korean ones so thanks for introducing them. I have always used the Anessa and Allie sunscreens for waterproof and also La Roche posay as EU sunscreens are pretty strong as steel for the beaches. I always wondered is it because going to the beach isn't a thing in Korea like it is in the west or Japan lol
I bet they do. But they practice other sun protective measures too like covering up and alway reapply when needed. Not something typical for ppl in the West.
BTW recent update numbuzin 1 sunscreen is back on yes style again I was so excited that I bought 6 tubes , it’s now my holy grail , especially it’s very very very difficult for me to find a perfect sunscreen that won’t get into yours eyes or itchy skin or feeling tight at the end of the day , it’s my skin barrier but better , numbuzin 1 sun essence is something that were be highly highly recommended especially a very very picky mature skin person like me
For the Korean sunscreens, I recommend watching Odile Monods videos about Korean Water Resistant sunscreens. She went over how they are labeled and tested. The Dr. Ceuracle one has 80 min water resistant. Ill have to look at the Missha one. Japanese are improving on how they are labeling for water resistant. Its expected that by the end of the year, all water resistant sunscreens will have a one or two star on the label.
i really love odile monods video as she recomanded skin care product for mature skin like me , and Tina tanaka for her Japanese skin care knowlege like sekkisei or decot'e and james welch for his realistic advice , and hyram for his free skin care habit hacks tips
Hi Kelly, thank for your amazing video. I have recently tried the Shingmulnara sunscreen but don't recommend it because the texture is too hard to blend. Minus the unbreathable scent from it too :(
This is perfect, I needed this video so bad! I live 10 min outside of Boston MA, and it gets so so so humid here in the late spring all through summer. Today is already 87% humidity, it's 70° and I am profusely sweating and it's only 9am! It's supposed to get up to 85° today too... UGH! So needless to say, I really need a good sweat proof sunscreen! Thanks so much for making the best skincare videos! ❤
@Storm411z Oh my goodness, I don't know how you survived either! The humidity makes the heat unbearable, it's just gross feeling hot and wet and sticky! Ugh!
Anessa is super water- and friction-resistant. It's a hybrid sunscreen, a pricey one. It does have alcohol, but no fragrance. I only use it during hot and humid NYC summers. Otherwise, it can be a bit drying on my skin. Because it has a mineral filter as well, it can have a slight white cast on people with darker skin tones. I am very fair, so it doesn't show up on me, but I know people with olive skin tone and they told me that it can give a bit of a white cast. All in all, this is a sunscreen I use when I know I will have a higher exposure to sun that day.
Don't like it. Bought 1 bottle in Tokyo, used it up. When I first applied it in the morning, it is ok, but by the end of the day, I saw some white streaks on my face, probably due to the mineral ingredient, and it also stings my eyes. Too expensive and not worth the money for me.
Unfortunately as the day goes on or at the end of a sweaty gym session, it stings a little if applied too close the waterline. But it's great and matte for humid climates and the gym.
@@blee8607 agree. I do notice slight white steaks at the end of the day, but the protection I get is still worth it to me. I am very fair, so reliable sun protection is very important to me. I am trying a few European sunscreens this summer. Will se if they are as good protection-wise, but don’t have the same white cast issue.
Thanks for this review Kelly - much needed! I've been enjoying the OMI - Verdio UV Moisture Gel Water Proof Sunscreen - its unscented and in a huge 220g size with a pump!
Face republic purity sun essence has a claim of waterproof/resistance. I haven’t put that to the test, but I do like it as a sunscreen. I’d be curious because I don’t sweat much how well it holds up. They’re also cheap on stylevana you get 50 ml for 9-10 dollars.
My favorite is AHC Masters Aqua Rich Sun Cream but it comes in such small 30ml tubes! 😭 It’s made by Kolmar and feels similar to Skin1004 Hyalu-Cica. I guess AHC is known more for their sun sticks, and the Masters version is my favorite, but c‘mon, 30ml is mini. Second is Face Republic Purity Sun Essence. Also a Kolmar formula. Hopefully this is a sign that more water resistant options will be forthcoming, especially since it seems every summer is getting hotter. Once my stash gets low (next year 😬) I’m going to try that Shingmulnara sunscreen. Guess what, it’s also made by Kolmar! I don’t mind a little fragrance and even tried Isa Knox but found that one way too overpowering.
Have you tried the Skin Aqua Super Moisture Barrier UV Essence or Gel? Would love to hear your thoughts on this, as it seems to have replaced my holy grail - the now discontinued Skin Aqua Super Moisture Gold UV line. I'm super oily and get sweat very easily, so I need a heavy duty water resistant sunscreen with a non-greasy finish.
I keep going back to this videos for reference. I'm trying to find a sunscreen that both me and my boyfriend can use. Was strictly loyal to mineral sunscreens so we used CoTZ and TiZo but both leave a white cast especially on me as I have the tan Asian skin where as he's American and white but it catches on his beard. We used CoTz snowboarding and we both had a distinct tan - they have a 40minute water resistant claim. Have you used or heard of the Holika Holika Aloe Waterproof Sun Cream 70ml - can't seem to find it anywhere but on Amazon US and that makes me weary but I bought it and so far so good but I only started using it this past Monday. Thoughts on TiZo, CoTz, Holika Holika?
Hi Kelly I always watch spf videos with interest, but I use Ultrasun everyday (spf 30 most of the year and 50+ in the warmer months in 🏴 Scotland). It’s a Swiss longwear hybrid spf that is fragrance free and doesn’t irritate my rosacea or eczema. I have used this brand for over a decade and it is accepted for sale in Australia (they have the strictest spf testing in the world). I appreciate that in the US many European spfs are difficult to acquire however (I send it to the US to my mum regularly as she lives near Atlanta and also has rosacea). I don’t think many Asian SPFs offer the longwear of some European brands eg ultrasun, evy or P20 and I like the convenience of these. I do top up if I’m out for a prolonged period as I am a Fitzpatrick one, but I am more confident in the protection they offer for incidental exposure which is my normal exposure. I obviously seek shade whenever possible as I am not suited to strong sunlight eg prickly heat prone and headache prone 😂. Best wishes x
Hi Kelly. I would like to suggest Sun Play. it's jbeaity but they have really good protection. I used it for swimming and it's pretty good. Please take note that I live in a tropical country so that's sayong a lot. However, it has alcohol. Very elegant texture though.
Hi, I have also been loving this Holika Holika Aloe Soothing Essence Waterproof Sun Cream Spf50, its light and protective. I believe it's worth a try Kelly 😊
I agree on the Missha! The smell is sooo bad and doesn’t fade. The finish is amazing for my oily skin, but unfortunately I can’t stand the smell. I tried to use it up on my legs since they’re farther from my nose lol. I couldn’t believe how well it dried down; my legs didn’t stick to each other at all when they touched! The dry touch is amazing, but that perfume has got to go! Thanks for the reviews!
Thanks so much for this!!! Just what I needed ☺️ do you have any recs for matte sunscreens? I’m trying to get my boyfriend to start wearing sunscreen… but I don’t think he’ll wear anything that’s shiny on him haha
Maybe the Beauty of Joseon Stick: th-cam.com/video/XlAhyGhc7Dc/w-d-xo.html It could be a gateway into sunscreen, something easy to use and carry and feels more sporty than skincare-y (which can be an important factor for men who aren't super into a routine)
In your experience, have you found that water resistant sunscreens require a bit more deliberate cleansing, or only specific ones like the Skin Aqua one? I live in a tropical country and it's always hot out here, so I like the idea of a water resistant sunscreen for better protection, but I don't double cleanse and I'm always concerned I'm leaving sunscreen residue on my face. Alice (of AliceintheRabbitHole) feels that Japanese sunscreens are still easy to remove, despite the water resistance (and based on my experience with the Biore Watery Essence, I agree!), so I've recently been looking a little more into Japanese sunscreens. Korean sunscreens are starting to feel samey - lightweight, moisturising, some kind of centella and/or antioxidant and/or peptide and/or niacinamide, yet it's never clear that they're included in any notable concentrations at all so it feels like marketing fluff.
I feel the exact same thing because of the zinc, but this is my favorite sunscreen! tbh probably my HG. Has anyone found something super similar thats water/sweat resistant but perhaps fully chemical or not as drying and has the same finish?
I just received my tube of the Dr. C😢I picked it up for my next vacation. I will be walking around parks and stuff. Do you think it'll be enough? I'm a little short on time to make another order
Ehi Kelly, I’ve been meaning to catch the moment you post our new videos to ask you a suggestion about a tried and true fave cream but I hadn’t yet found the time. I wanted to ask you, if you think that The Yam vegan collagen line by Innisfree is for you a great one, a great valid alternative. I mean compared to the Torriden yellow line (out of which I’m getting the stunning toner), the Aestura one, the classic fave of La Roche P., etc. One for our barrier care and protection, regeneration, full moisturizing. I know the line thanks to you (have never tried it out the skincare I buy, but this time around I am really craving a go to it). Thought, you mostly were constantly in love with the cleanser and the essence, so I still wanted to ask you to this present day after long. And yes, I’m about to make my new skincare order hahaha. Love Ale ❤
Hey Ale, I think you're asking about the Isntree Yam Root Toner and Cleanser. Yes I still enjoy both, the cleanser I use about 1x a week and it's almost empty. The toner is wonderful but very rich and doesn't work for me in warm weather, however, it's great if your skin is dry!
@@KellyDriscoll yes my keyboard corrected the words sorry! I know, I watch all of your videos… it’s cause you never really got on raving too much about the moisturizer and I wanted to know, if you suggested it as well as much as the other two products out of the line still.
I’ve worn the suncut super water proof one from kose and it feels mildly heavy but really holds up with sweat it has alcohol but it doesn’t feel drying at least to me
Where can I find the new Skin Aqua? The link you provided goes to stylevana that has the ingredients of talc and ethanol. That’s the old formula right?
Stylevana is notorious for outdated and plain wrong ingredients. The product was reformulated in 2023 so the older formula would be phased out by now. I bought mine from Yesstyle (which also listed the old formula) but received the new one! This site tracks all the ingredients, formulation changes (and dates) and package changes of J-beauty products: www.ratzillacosme.com/sun/skin-aqua-uv-super-moisture-milk-2023/
@@KellyDriscoll great to know! thanks so much for responding. it’s gonna be my first time ordering from those sites so i just wanna make sure i don’t order a product that i would end up not using if they are still the old formula. glad to know you got the new formula! thanks
I'm not sure how formulations work, but for some reason Purito is now claiming that their Soft Touch sunscreen is now water resistant, but it wasn't before. I compared the ingredients and they are the same like the old packaging. I don't know, but I don't' trust them on this claim
It's likely it always had water resistance, but now they shelled out for the testing. Most indie brands just don't take the extra step to pay for the water-resistant testing (it's not a part of the testing of the UVB and UVA protection levels). They usually skip it due to the additional cost and how much it can delay getting a product to market. This was explained in my podcast interview with Dr. Julian Sass th-cam.com/video/2EQOzJp2_-s/w-d-xo.html
Yes but it was quite a few years ago and I believe it's been reformulated since then, I know the packaging definitely changed! But I loved it, and recommended it a lot!
Hi Kelly, how do you figure out the expiry date and PAO for J-sunscreens? I just got the Verdio Moisture Gel SPF 50+ but it doesn't have an expiry or PAO. It's very hydrating in my opinion, not greasy, but does have a very dewy finish. I don't mind it, but some people might dislike it. xx❤
Check out this article, Ratzille Cosme is the best guide to understanding J-beauty: www.ratzillacosme.com/guides/jbeauty-expiration-dates-guide/#:~:text=Sunscreen%3A%203%E2%80%936%20months,and%20concealer%3A%206%E2%80%9312%20months
Stylevana and Yesstyle usually don't update the ingredients even when they have the reformulation! I bought my skin aqua on Yesstyle in April and it's the new version!
P.Calm Water Barrier is what I got for my face SkinAqua I got several different ones love the UV Gel so far KOSE Suncut UV Gel Thank You Mommy I wasn’t crazy about .. need sweat resistant for my face!!! For gardening g too Lol!!!! 🤍🤍🤍🤍🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🤍🤍🤍 I’ve got Dahlia blooms already!!!! 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
I wish more brands that are good at picking formulations would come up with water resistant sunscreens in their lines (like BOJ). I am struggling to find highly water resistant pure-chemical SPFs without Tinosorb M or any fragrance, alcohol, or other eye sting-causing ingredients in the Korean market. None of these fit the bill. If you’re really active like I am, you’re basically out of luck with kbeauty. 😭 I’m bewildered by the fact that Korea has the competence to create the most elegant daily sunscreens in the world but at the same time seems to lose all comprehension of consumer needs and grip of reality when you are looking for an active SPF. Like, is my mountain hike really the time to make me smell like a department store perfume counter? Does it really make sense to deprioritize avoiding eye sting when I’m drenched in sweat in a 110 F hot yoga class? Does a 30-50ml tube make any sense when I need full body coverage at the pool? C’mon, Korea. Don’t be ridiculous. I’m ready to spend the money but the offering really needs improvement.
I’ve worn the Tatcha sunscreen for scuba diving and was really surprised I didn’t get a mask tan nor a sunburn the entire 10-day trip! And I wasn’t appalled at the appearance on my medium skin tone (I wear a 8/10 in the Fenty Eaze Drops depending on the season). Price is steep, still working on finding a comparable, cheaper option.

The MISSHA sunscreen has become a new fave for me! Edit: I was also scared bc I have sensitive skin. The powdery finish is was sold me
Kelly have you tried the Biore Athlizm? It’s for those outdoor activities
Great Video Kelly
All of these would be fine to remove with just a regular cleanser, as long as you take your time you don't need to double cleanse!
I feel the exact same thing because of the zinc, but this is my favorite sunscreen! tbh probably my HG.
Has anyone found something super similar thats water/sweat resistant but perhaps fully chemical or not as drying and has the same finish?
Thank you Kelly 💫
I just received my tube of the Dr. C😢I picked it up for my next vacation. I will be walking around parks and stuff. Do you think it'll be enough? I'm a little short on time to make another order
It's fine for light activity and sweat, it wouldn't be my choice for the beach, you can always buy spf wherever you're going!
Please try shingmulnara cleansing oil and calendula toner.
Great video!
Love Ale ❤
Hey Ale,
I think you're asking about the Isntree Yam Root Toner and Cleanser.
How many water droplets would you rate the Omi verdio moisture gel?
I’ve worn the suncut super water proof one from kose and it feels mildly heavy but really holds up with sweat it has alcohol but it doesn’t feel drying at least to me
Sun cut is a good one!
@@KellyDriscoll just started trying so not sure but is from the kose Cosme manufacturer like annesa that is a good sign I guess
Are any of the other Rohto Mentholatum spf water-resistant?
was hoping that you can make an eyecream video ?
This one is a little older but still relevant! th-cam.com/video/clovhzuC6Cw/w-d-xo.html
If the new Soft Touch version has either 내수성 for 40 mins or 지속내수성 for 80 minutes, on their box or bottle, then it is tested for water resistant.
none of these are avaliable in my country:(
what do you think aboit HOLIKA HOLIKA waterproof aloe sun cream?
I haven't tried that one, sorry!
Have you tried the Verdio waterproof uv moisture gel?
Yes but it was quite a few years ago and I believe it's been reformulated since then, I know the packaging definitely changed! But I loved it, and recommended it a lot!
Share alcohol free mineral sunscreen. There aren't many this type sunscreen options
Already did last year! th-cam.com/video/vRXG_CXkiJc/w-d-xo.html
I don't mind it, but some people might dislike it. xx❤

im still seeing ethanol for the skin aqua on yes style n stylevana ingredient list??
Stylevana and Yesstyle usually don't update the ingredients even when they have the reformulation! I bought my skin aqua on Yesstyle in April and it's the new version!
@@KellyDriscoll thank you very much for clarifying this!
I’m always looking for alcohol in my sunscreen.
🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
Kelly, there’s a big difference between waterproof and water resistant products. 🤔 So you can’t really judge them against each other.
Waterproof is just a marketing term and isn't even allowed in some countries, no SPF will be totally waterproof.
🐝
ALL SPF must be sweat resistant. That's an international standard.
I’m bewildered by the fact that Korea has the competence to create the most elegant daily sunscreens in the world but at the same time seems to lose all comprehension of consumer needs and grip of reality when you are looking for an active SPF.
Agree. Tatcha’s is awesome but insanely priced.
