Stealth Camping in High Winds with Cheap Tent

- In this cozy episode of Small Plots, I pitch a cheap backyard tent in some woods behind a shopping center in an attempt to weather "yellow alert" wind warning.
I cook a hotdog on a portable fire tin (City Bonfires), experience the majesty of snow, and try not to get blown away.

I always have a dozen or more different lightweight ways to start a fire so a single point of failure can't cause a catastrophe. Several of those ways do not require fine motor skills in case I don't have dexterity due to cold or injury. I highly recommend it as it could save your life like the conditions you're in.

Fellow Rochestarian here (born and raised). Ummm...WHY were you eating Oscar Meyer "hot dogs" in this video??? I think you know where I'm going here, Kevin. Anyway...I enjoy your content because I love our city and I love that you brave all those little nook and crannies that the average citizen of Rochester would NEVER venture. So many times I have gone by your "stealth" sites on my daily travels as a gig worker and have said to myself "Oh, that guy I watch on TH-cam stealth camped there!" Also...good on you for braving that crazy wind last evening/night. I know exactly where you were and wow, that's nuts you did that all night!
Hey thanks, Wendie! You're right, I should have brought a pop-open white hot haha. Rochester certainly has a lot of nooks... Some even I wouldn't camp in, though. I really want to camp on the river below Maplewood Rose Garden, but they keep finding bodies 😯

I like my tent. It’s just cozy in nasty weather. Most of our camping was just sleeping under our canoe on trips here in Canada. Thanks nice job.

Chopsticks! One of my favorite bushcrafting things to do... make chopsticks. So many uses beyond an eating utensils. You just showed another use, so thank you :) I generally don't do winter camping. I have, mind you, and in a hammock no less. The cold wasn't the problem, but the wind... I don't know if you experienced it, but the wind can send a hammock swaying and that aint a good thing. And lastly, keep that city campfire thing in mind... and here's the idea: dig out a Dakota firepit, put one of those things in it, and I bet you got an all night fire.

Kevin, Awesome video/Stealth Camp. I'm a tent guy for the reasons you mentioned. That was some serous wind. Just finished editing my Philadelphia Mills Urban Stealth video, although my recording and editing skills aren't near as honed as yours!

Good video. Beautiful location. The channel is interesting to watch for those who are interested in bushcraft topics. We are also passionate about bushcraft. We recently made a small log cabin in the winter forest and stayed there overnight.

when one hits a certain age a CHAIR takes precedence over everything !! Also 1 hiking staff for stability .
I do love a chair, but with my pack (25 liters) I had to choose between a chair and a tent
Great area for a camp out. In warmer weather you can lead nature hikes with the walkers from the Al Sigl Center.

I live in the hills, farming communities, north east of GB, non religious sun worshippers, we follow the sun around like limpets lol drooling over it whenever we get the chance.
No sunlight means no vitamind which means soon see signs of auto immune issues / deficiency...
Why the Brits are obsessed with the weather. It is grey, cold, damp 99% of the year lol haha miserable!
So our farming ancestors invented lots of excuses to party.
Imbolc ~ 1st of February, marks festival celebrating start of Spring] we call them lambing storms, they often bring snow, then it's March Winds.
Ostara ~ 21st March, festival of fertility, estrogen, fertile soils, celebration for a bountiful crop. (Religious folks adopted our old seasonal traditions, ostara = easter.
I can relate, Rochester can get pretty grey for long stretches of time, as well
@@smallplots i visit a tanning salon once or twice a week, that helps with the vit D, vit D does everything! without vit D our gi tract can't absorb any of the other vitamins/minerals/nutrients, i can often be found on a deck chair in the garden wrapped in blankets and fleeces, exposing face, hands, feet to the wintery sun

Maybe someday I will! I lived there for 5 years, over 2 excursions (2 years, then back a few years later for a 3 year stint). Denver is a great city, I'm just unapologetically north east and it didn't always mesh well with the western state of mind.
Did you camp in that 70 mile an hour winds in December. I was in the hospital wondering if you would walk by looking for a place to camp???
