I met him around 1977 in a match (boys-B) during a competition in Stockholm. He barely reached the table but was among Stockholm's best in his age group. During our match, he didn't take off his overalls and used me more as a warm-up, putting the balls high up most of the time so I got to smash and he got to plock. He won both sets by around 21-15 but could have won 21-0 if he wanted to. In that competition he came 2nd after losing in the final against his older brother Kjell-Åke. In any case, I'm happy to have met him in competition, something I can brag about🙂
Awesome documentary, but it needs English and maybe Mandarin subs. Lots of chinese still loves this guy. As a swede I enjoyed it in full, something I wish for the others too.
Waldner is a old friend of Chinese people which was approvaled by the Chinese government and Chinese people. This is the highest admiration for a foreigner. The last foreigner I know to receive this admiration is Bethune. As Chinese, we should be grateful to Waldene. Without him, table tennis may not be so international.
The Greatest table tennis player in history what he done as an Scandinavian/european player will no one achive, He won everything. im proud to also be a Table tennis player and also Swedish, he is and will allways be my inspiration to become good in a sport where everyone can play. this is our King and President! for all the people who say Table Tennis is not a sport, its one of the biggest!
I speak very little Swedish, but I am a huge Waldner fan and used the little knowledge that I have to deduce what I could from the video...I had no idea he had such a gambling problem and played away 5 million krona!! I would love for someone to provide english subtitles so that I could understand other parts of the video, and I'm sure many others would agree, it is very hard to find biographical information such as this video on Waldner.
I'm glad to hear that you too are a big fan of Waldner. What an incredible athlete! In a not too distant future AI will be able to give us subtitles. Cheers
He reminds me a lot of Marco van Basten. Very different sport, but same confidence, fluent technical skills, as we say in NL his "uitstraling" is very similar. The way they both move their body and how they are built. Difference: one had a very short career because of a selfinflicted injury when youg whereas the other is the "evergreen tree".
+GallaN666 I have very little problem with reading Swedish. I once was on a trip in Rovaniemi, Finland. While we could notmake out a thing in Finnish, we felt very lucky we could understand Swedish. And none of us had any lessons ever. It is very similar to Dutch. Pronounciation is different and some words are different too. But with my friends we looked at series of Wallander etc and we had quite a few laughs how whole sentences were really identical to ours but just more up and down than our monotonous language. Danish btw is even closer but it is far more difficult for us to understand than Swedish...In my local language in the soutwestern part of The NEtherlands the word is in fact "utstraling" It is even closer. With the swedish "u" and not the German "u" sound...:-)
+takitezy7 Van Basten was an avid tabletennisplayer btw in his younger years. As a kid in NL in winter you either played tabletennis (in the 70s and 80s) or icespeedskating. Well....icespeedskating is far more popular but lately the icy winters are much fewer than they were in the good old days. May tabletennis will get a revival.
+Serenoj69 -- In your dialect of Dutch, do you use the Swedish more rounded "u" as set apart from the German "ü" where you pull back your lips more, so "ut" ("out" in English) in "utstraling" sounds the same as the Swedish word "ut"?
Faan vad jag saknar den tiden. Min idol Ingemar Stenmark får nog ge sig nu efter 60 eftertacksamma år. Stenis hade 100.000 utmanare. Pingislandslaget o J-o hade MILJONER utmanare!
He is the only GOD of table tennis, period Every time I play pingpong, I pray before his picture. He is the only God in China, no other God allowed in China.
"Den här killen har gått in och förstört deras nationalsport helt enkelt..." Ja det var ju fint beröm från Brolin. Konstigt bara att han inte flikade in sig själv på slutet lite blygsamt. Men kom väl på att "precis som jag förstörde den italienska fotbollen..." kanske inte lät så bra.
Welcome ... Its important to people to see the JO another side of his life but its difficult to catch the mood if do not know the swedish ... Maybe someone could translate for everybody.
Dammit! , I sometimes I thought it was english... sometimes German (I'm on Middle levels)... So... to understand correctly... swedish?!!... all my dreams are dead now , haha .

approvaled by a dictator means mutch
Who cares about an approval of CCP or their sympathizers (aka CCP slaves) lmao.
Это звезда и легенда мирового настольного тенниса.❤❤❤
A kind of Mozart in his virtuosity in handling the ball. A true ballgenious.
The English subtitles seem to stop at around 16:20. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
The same as you suffered. That's too bad.
5:50 " Ma Lin is suffering from a cold. Its uncertain but his mother claims its should be alright." Haha
Sweden's best-known ambassadors to the world: Volvo/SAAB, IKEA, and Jan Ove Waldner
I d rather say 1 Ingemar Stenmark 2 Björn Borg 3 ABBA
Så fantastisk dokumentär. Waldner representerar det bästa av svenskar.
Waldner is like the Larry Bird of table tennis.
That's actually a really good parable
That's a pretty good comparison. I'm swedish btw.
