Thanks a lot! The better test uses an Autel accessory (MaxiBAS BT506) to test the state of health and charge of a car battery. I have had the chance to use OEM authorization, but I have a feeling its to do with FCA cars. I'll find revert once I find out more.

Hey. You bought it used? You have to get the Autel ID and password from the former owner. If not you can't even get a subscription to download data. I haven't tried using someone else's backup and so can't advise.
The tool can be used without updates generally. However, you won't be able to run some tasks for above 2017 FCA cars. I covered what to expect when you subscription expires in this video th-cam.com/video/LbjuKp1rYXA/w-d-xo.html Updates fix bugs and add new functionality and coverage for newer cars. Very important if you don't plan on renewing your subscription is to learn how to backup the tool. I also have a video on that. It can save you if your tool becomes corrupt.

Totally agree that Autel needs to rethink their subscription fees, but as you've seen, you can get upto 50% off if you time it right

What happens when you miss a year or two of updates? Can you still update the scanner or do you need to pay for previous updates as well?
No need to pay for missed years. You will have access to all years missed.
