  • The Art Channel visits Georg Baselitz's exhibition 'Darkness Goldness', which explores the physical nature and symbolism of the human hand in a series of linked monotype paintings, drawings and relief sculptures. Each work is unique but in the gallery hung together they become a group exploring the character and universal meaning of the hand from the earliest cave paintings to anatomical drawings. In the series, Baselitz is making clear art historical references to Albrecht Dürer and Egon Schiele who have also employed the hand as a motif and subject.

I have admired Baselitz's work for many years, mainly his figures. A show of hands ( no pun intended) in this tumultuous year-- really?? Gold? Underwhelmed would be my response. The art speak verbage given about these " hands" is not very convincing. A comment was made that the hands are the most expressive part of the body- not. The FACE would win that argument. The drawings were the only highlights of this show. The face was sorely missed in this exhibit.
