  • I took a train from Almaty (Kazakhstan) to Tashkent (Uzbekistan) - the old journey time was 26 hours, but the new TALGO train does the journey in just 16 hours. Learn all about taking the trains alone, border crossings in Central Asia and negotiating transport with very little Russian in this video!
I'm overlanding from Bali to London!

Claire, did you travel via Urumqi to get to Almaty ? I am travelling through Urumqi next year to go to Kazahkstan and beyond but have heard various stories about the aggressiveness of the Chinese border guards. Any bad experiences if you did that crossing?

@@hkjsenglish hi David, no I didn't! I ended up travelling via Mongolia and Russia to Kazakhstan, a bit of a longer route but I wasn't sure about the logistics of going through Western China. If you haven't checked out Caravanistan yet I highly recommend them!

Everyone including the most innocent one seems to get nervous when crossing a boarder. I wonder what psychology is invoved with.

Nice video, however, it appears that people don't like to be filmed. It will be very difficult to know and understand the country and its culture and traditions without an active interaction of people in public places.
