Thanks so much for the idea. I have an F31, glass lid stuck shut. I could not find a manual release and was about to give up. I ordered a new switch from BMW, then attempted your fix. The cover was not easy to pry off, but I was past caring. Managed to get the cover off and then shorted the light brown and black wire together - glass tailgate opened!! Allowed me access to complete the job of replacing the switch (Switch by itself is £58 from BMW parts). Thanks again for posting this video.

So glad to find this! My window all of a sudden won’t open. No clock. No nothing. Will pop the cap to see if cleaning it out helps. Thx so much for the post.

That spring is just a mechanism to give the switch a "feel" its not the contact. The contact is on that plastic circuit board. Its a spot at the front that works similar to a remote control. The contact surfaces are worn and the only long term solution is replacing the switch. The old switch is hard to remove. I cut mine off carefully to avoid damaging the glass. The new part is modified. If yours won't open, to replace the switch, there is a manual release hole that's hard to access. I might make a video of the next one I replace.

I've had my E61 for a couple of months now and opened the tailgate glass for the first time today. Now it won't lock. The only thing I did was open it and clean the black plastic underneath with a bit of quick detailer and a cloth around the tailgate.

Do you have any suggestions as to what might be the problem? Is there some sort of knack to locking them?

@@MrHullRockers try getting in, locking with the central locking open drivers door, get out and shut glass. Thats a temporary solution until you get a new switch.

Great video, it worked! Except how did you manage to get that spring back in so easily? Mine kept slipping to one side so many time but I left it out and the switch still works. Thanks.

I had the problem that I was not able to open the glass. after disassembling and cleaning, at least it already works although with difficulty because I have to apply a lot of force by pressing the button. but hey, it works. a pain in the ass less. Thanks so much for your video, Mark! Greetings from Andalusia, Spain: thumbup:

hi, i have the oposite problem, mine has stopped working, i.e it wont open. 3 series touring 2006. what do i do???

  • @neilmcalester

A word of warning. I tried this on a 2014 3 series. The switch is constructed differently, there is a micro switch inside and the cover is so far proving impossible to replace. Removing the micro switch did however sort my problem which was that the tail gate wouldn't open. The car thought the boot was open when it was closed and therefore wouldn't open it.

Hey, I have an e91 and the window doesn't stay up anymore and it's feeling heavy so do you have any idea how I can fix it and why I have this issue? (When I close the window I heard a sound like a piece of metal is dropped to the floor)

Have a look at the playlist on the tailgate wiring at the end of this video. In there I show the hinges on the glass and the fittings that hold them in place. I actually launched a bolt during the filming. I'm sure that will help you out.

Nice video. Might I ask you or the forum?: my lid just won’t open at all. It worked fine just a week ago. Should I open up the switch and dry it and wd40 it, or just buy a new switch for about $67 us and try that? Could something else typically be awry? Ok. Thanks in advance.

Hi Jonathan Reed I would pop that cover off and try to clean it. It is so simple. This repair is months old now and still working perfectly

FAIRBOY11 There is a link to a tailgate wiring play list at the end of this video. Have a look at those videos. In one I found the switch wires up under the fairing at the top of the glass. You can short those wires to open the glass. You can check for broken wires, etc by trying this. MRT

@@Marksreviewsandtutorials Mark, thanks a lot, my car is an E46 and the electronic unit on that car is not mounted on the tailglass like on yours, it is inside the car under the glove compartment, so called GM5 module that controls all the door locks, I believe it releases the ground to the tailgate switch only when you unlock the doors for the manual switch to operate. Shorting at the tailgate switch did not do anything, the good news is that it operates from the car key remote which means I can rule out the latching mechanism, anyway, appreciate your reply and videos very much!
