Great gift ideas. I give each of my kids & their families a "family gift" for Christmas, it's usually to do with food. Last yr I made homemade tomato soup straight from the garden, I went to dollar tree & bought clear bowls for each member of each family, then I found material for each member of each family, ex: guys like camo, mom's like buffalo check, little ones dinosaurs & tonka trucks, little girlies, pixies or frozen characters. Then I made the bowl cozies for them all, they loved it. This yr it was themed more on cookware, my son's wife is enjoying baking so make sweet breads etc, I bought the pampered chef baking loaf stone, made up dry ingreg. In a mason jar, included the recipes, for a banana choc chip bread & then a corn bread. For the handmade items, they got a hot pad to match the kitchen decor the size of the pan & pot holders. My daughter mentioned one day she was making alot of homemade pizza, so you guessed it a pizza stone, mason jars for home made dough including yeast in a little baggie, and recipe. Homemade pizza sauce from the garden, fitted hot pad & pot holders. They all loved it. Cookie sheets one yr, cooling racks & utensils the following with different cookies in the jar, 2nd yr even taped a 4oz jar w peanut butter in it. It's easy to come up with food ideas the rest falls into place. 🎄🎄🎄

This was one of my favorite projects ever on the channel. I’m sold! I created an account and bought several casserole sets, some of the tools, and the cheerful cozy winter Scandi fabric. These will make really use gifts. I have lots of teachers, family, and new neighbors this year.

My mother passed away recently and she too would have loved this. I made bowl cozies earlier this year. I am going to make a Christmas set and include this to use when we celebrate with my Father this year.
I quickly made this casserole dish hot pad for thanksgiving. Super easy and I gave it to a friend. Mine was a touch bigger, as I don’t like to waist fabric so it was the width of fabric.
How to Grade Seam Allowances Sew the seam first and press flat. Starting with the S.A. of the lining or innermost layer, trim close to stitching. Trim the next layer close to the first trimmed layer but leave the allowance a bit wider. Repeat with the remaining layers until seam is completely graded.
I have broken the plastic turners! Now I use the RNK Precision Turning Tool. It’s got the metallic ball on top & won’t roll because of the flat sides. Sooo handy!
I find it’s a lot easier to topstitch and reduces the bulk by cutting the batting smaller than the fabric. Thank you for this video. Could have used this for Thanksgiving.
I made one of these last December for the stuffing my husband makes. Unfortunately we didn't get to use it, because we have to cancel his family dinner due to illnesses. But we havenit for next year. Or an enchilada casserole, or lasagna.
Another way to address the bulk is to cut the fabric 1/2” larger than is required and instead of stitching on top of the batting, stitch along side of the edge of the batting and therefore you reduce the bulk while sewing the top and the bottom together. One other idea is to make binding and attach that to the outer edge just like you do for quilting. I would use the reflecting batting towards the side that the hot casserole is going to be up against thereby reflecting the heat back to food in the casserole and use the decorative fat quarter as the outside fabric so you can enjoy the beauty of the design.
Thanks for doing sharing the detailed instructions. I always enjoy your beautiful things that you make and give us great instructions so we can make them for our own use and also give as a gift.
We are sew glad you love them!! Thank you for the feedback. We believe in you- we'd love to see your project photos too!! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
Have been thinking about making a casserole pad. Grading the bulk means trimming away only one side, not both. Also clip out tiny vees around the corners.
The instructions on how to make the casserole hot pad are included with the batting by The Gypsy Quilter so there isn't a separate pattern. Thanks for watching. Jen
It is super easy to make your own pattern. If you do buy the initial kit, just take the pattern yourself from the kit and make more using your own fabrics and batting. Also, you can make it microwavable safe by not using the reflective batting. Sometimes I find that these projects become repetitive and experienced sewers/quilters can do most w/o buying patters.
After you make one or two from the kit, I think it would be reasonably easy to modify the pattern to fit a variety of casserole sized dishes. I was thinking about starting with the original pattern and then making small adjustments to make one to fit my square 9x9” glass baking pan. I also have some much larger Pyrex casserole dishes that I take with a dish in them to large family holiday family meals, when we’re feeding 15 - 20 adults these days, as all the grandkids have become young adults, but my father-in-law doesn’t have local great-grandkids just yet.
Quilting yardage on a longarm machine, then cutting out the shapes would be an efficient way to make several of these. Without the InsulBright it would be microwave-safe.
If you clip everything perfectly stacked, then just sewing 1/4" seam is fine. When I was making the sample, I initially tried to sew with just 1/4". Due to the bulk, I found I nearly missed a layer in the seam allowance. By sewing a 1/2" seam, it's more of an insurance policy that I get all the layers in the seam. Thanks for watching. Jen
Enjoy your video's, may I make a suggestion to keep items way from in front of you to be able to clearly see what you are doing with obstructions. Thank you for all your great teaching and ideas.
This was so fun to watch and very pretty, Thank you... I have used a walking foot on my machine, was wondering if that would help to sew through all the layers. Really want to try :)
I’m assuming this is for a 9”x13” casserole dish. I want to order this, but wanted to check first. Thanks! Love your videos and your tips and tricks are very helpful.
