  • I am not an audiophile. But this amp with my Gemini pre-amp and JBL studio 190 tower speakers sounds pretty good to me!

I just picked up one of these, and using it with a pair of Magnepan LRS+ speakers, using an active Rolls SX45 crossover, splitting the signal at around 80hz, out to a pair of REL T-Zero MKIII subs. The DAC/preamp is the PS Audio Stellar Gaincell streaming with the WiiM Pro with linear power supply. This is an incredible sounding amp with the Maggies. The midrange is nice and meaty, voicing is very very good, along with the highs. The instrument separation, along with the soundstage, also very very good. Testing with some Willie Nelson, Melody Gardot, Wynton Marsalis... The horns, piano, this sounds really really good. Smooth, none of that shrill brightness one gets with a Class D amplifier. This is a keeper.

I remember my pre-amp now, It was an Audiovision. And my old Crown amp was Amcron.

I'm a computer technician, yes you are right, for many years I didnt bother to stop the fans until I realised they were acting like a small generator, but I never did any damage so probably doesnt make any difference.

    Hey friend.
. I can explain in detail but let it suffice to say, the advice from your local shop is mistaken. To set the gains on the Crown, turn your PreAmp volume to full, then raise the Crown gains up until it's as loud as your ever going to get.
The advantage this way is that you'll have full range of the Volume Pot to use. This is especially helpful when listening at lower levels because you'll have much finer control down there. You may get 5 or 6 "notches" down low instead of 1 or 2 maybe, for example (and there's other reasons).

OK thanks - good to know. I'm assuming they were just explaining in simplest terms. Its a large HIfi store in Corio Vic, they definitly know what they are talking about but I'm thinking they didnt want (or have time) to go into details.

. Shaking my head, you're defending bad advice based on geo-location & store size? I don't understand that.
Simplest terms? What do you mean? How much simpler can it get than how I said it? Did they just point & grunt? I don't understand that either.
      Such nonsense.

@@TriAmpHiFi Actually at the time I was talking to the owner on the phone. I did say to you "OK thanks good to know.".. you didnt see that? Who cares anyway? Like I said I am not an audiophile so it doesnt have to be perfect... For me. They were the ones who sold me the amp and preamp thats why I asked them which of the two you should use for volume. Seriously its not a big deal.

. Well, presumably 160 Subscribers care, You have channel demographics available & see people mostly watch to learn. Or try to anyway.
No big deal? Than why include it in the video? And how much difference can you now note between the two methods of setting Gain? A fair bit I'm sure.
And if your truly apathetic & don't care, seriously friend, go see a psychologist. Happiness, joy and Love are abundant and are all around us everyday. Best of luck.

Certainly, not Crowns best design of power amp. It's more inline with a Behringer competitor than MC2 or Powersoft, etc. The older Crown amps tend to be of a much better build quality than their efforts today. They built them like tanks back then, such as the MA5000/2 or the giant that is the MA10000.

. Behringer is competitor to Aiyma & Fosi audio. The Crown XLi line is competitor to Emotiva BasX and Monoprice M-series power amps.
Crown wins against all of them.

. Right, I'm glad you mention series. Ya, the Behringer A series is pretty good for these types of amps. I think measuring it against the Crown 1502 DriveCore series would be more appropriate, given their both class D's. Then the specs become competitive.
The Crown XLi series is, of course, class A/B with a big honking Copper Doughnut and a fair amount of capacitance. Now neither the Behringer nor the Crown are Audiophile amps, however the XLi's have the power PAST one-time instant peak numbers and can consistently deliver wattage throughout a percussion heavy performance or recording. Even though the D's have higher damping. That's why I find them quite acceptable for low frequency reinforcement over the Behringer.
Not to be overlooked too is the market & re-sale value to the Crown. Walk in to any music warehouse or guitar center and walk out with some bread at anytime.
