Opinions are so funny. You see “messy” layouts where I see clean/organized layouts. And you’re drawn to creative layouts where I can’t stand those; I don’t have time and patience to sit around scrolling to figure out how their website is organized.
he sucks, I cannot disagree. It would be called amazing if it had a 'designed by Figma' on it. Hard to believe I come across his vids twice a year when looking for an specific topic... Always regret.
I think one problem that most designers have in terms of their site design is that most of them are either bad in the overall design or have bad portfolios. maybe because most of them are not really website designers but UX and UI(mobile) designers. I think this review should only be for WEBSITE DESIGNERS to really see how good they are in their craft.
I like this one. But I have some thoughts on the minimalism and artistic style in some portfolios: #5 (02:29) seemingly features a selfie with a filter (might be wrong, it's not personal) and you said it is too artistic for a designer. #16 (10:06) features an illustration that looks a bit more artistic to me than the one in #5. Being a designer doesn't only mean you need to show off that you are capable of creating good designs for products in your portfolio, but you may also show off your personality. So I think it's not inherently wrong to use an artistic style as long as it suits your target audience and represents you well. I think it comes down to how approachable you seem and if you show what you aim to do and how. But so far for an artistic look. I'm not sure how you can say #20 is too minimalistic, but #18 isn't. One of them is actually minimalistic, the other has, in my opinion, potential regarding use of space and readability. I think in #18 it's really smart to suggest the site is scrollable by showing some elements peaking in from below. And I think you missed the link to projects in #17 (10:53) right next to "ABOUT ME". Could be a bit clearer where to find work samples, of course. Videos like this not only give an idea of what design rules or ideas you think a portfolio should follow, but also how quick hiring or contact decisions can be made. While I think you should get to know someone a bit in order to make sure you can work with them, I think this video also conveys how quick first impressions can have influence.
This takes me back to graphic design school and my teacher doing speedrun feedbacks :D it was both fun and not at the same time, but i will say this, i am glad she did, because it gave me a good thick skin in getting feedback and it also learned me to seperate my own ego from my work.
As a designer, I see many passionate portfolios. However, I understand that a recruiter needs to quickly skim through them, and they may not always be a designer themselves. This makes personal evaluation crucial. Therefore, one rejection doesn't mean all recruiters will feel the same. This video is valuable as it provides insights into the opinions and thought processes of a recruiter.
Sometimes I absolutely agree with your view on typography in given examples, partially agree. For example first one - there is only a mistake -- in addition to color and understroke selection there are differences in weight which still can work if only it wasn't too little in contrast and be the pretty workable maximalist solution. Of course, you have a brief glance and tell your impression of composition which is totally understandable.
Majority of designers underlook typography and spacing, some people here felt butt hurt which is understandable, not everyone know how to take constructive criticism thus never allowing improvement on their work.
Your opinion is very helpful actually, he didn't mean that your designs are not good but he is actually acting like a professional/company who doesn't have time to look deep into projects, rather a quick overview of your info/designs. I dig it. I need to work really hard as I'm just a beginner
One major problems I've seen so far is vertical spacing between lines of text. In conclusion, mastering one of the design the levels of the design process, might just be your one way ticket.
So many designers not optimizing their content, look over some crappy loading times for the images here. I assume it was done with pretty decent internet speed & on quite powerful device, it should be a red flag.
It's a little underwhelming seeing that you passed on some of them that tried to be a bit more creative while staying a minimum user friendly. I get that we're in an era where everything is modernised and simplified, but it's also the reason why a lot of websites nowadays feel soulless and lacking personality.
the last one, that one which you called childish and that one with the green arrow(#11). those were some pretty great and simple designs. I am not a pro designer though but if I had a company I would probably hire them. But the #4, It was too basic and a photoshoped picture on the background with no work example. I would never hire that person. The #3 one is too minimalistic in my opinion.
How is it helpful. "Good, nice, not good" - there is no real reasoning behind the assessment - is it your personal preference, is there objectively something wrong, is something overused or what exactly can be improved? It would be better to review 3 portfolios and explain the reasoning, mistakes or also differentiate why something might be not to your taste but objectively OK.
I don't think any of these portfolios were really good. A few had some nice elements, but overall it is really dissapointing that people can't present their work properly. Especially when you work in the digital industry. Just hire another expert in the area that your skills are lacking, and improve your website.
"best" is your opinion lol. I personally don't mind the "childish" one, but there were others that were "better". And again, that is now my opinion. He's trying to provide a look at what a company that's looking to hire may think, and that includes the short timeframes.

TBH calling number 4 "childish" is why UI/UX is so dull rn lol
yeah I thought number 4 was great
#5*

Absolutely. Pointless to have random non designers submitting their portfolios 🤦🏾♀️
I am a front-end developer and after watching this series, I realized I need to work on understanding design more.
Core design skills are essential
Put google and well known brands on your website and you are a solid designer. Got it.

Love this series this is so helpful to see! I hope these kind of videos continue
Dear Ran please include the websites urls in the description so we can check them and get inspired.

Couldn't agree more!
How is #5 not good :/ one of my personal top choices. you're right the logo was a bit small etc. but my overall impression was great

This is so not true.. considering how advanced the tech world is. People can just clone designs and present it.
@@jesamegbe1579 there are many types of companies. There are companies who are looking to hire a person who can make that kind of design.
I look at things and I’m like “this is incredible”. But then he points out something that you just can’t unsee, and the image is shattered 😂

At 7:25 on Margo’s portfolio you could have scrolled horizontally There was a bunch more work over to the right

Only thing is I think you would actually have to look into their case studies or work before saying would hire. Even if it was ten seconds
U still have to understand the main point of the video

This is great, I think it's better to be more honest and say no to a lot of portfolios you saw. More useful to be brutal than if you loved everything!
just realised my designs are not so bad in the end :D
On which platform can i submit my portfolio? i would like to take the chance and hear a honest thought from a professional :D
I have the same question
Hey. Is it possible to provide the links to these portfolios?
just google the freelancers name or something like that
This is superb. How can I put up my portfolio for review? I would like to get some feedback, thanks!!
>hovers over company logo
>"Obviously you didn't design this"
Thanks sherlock
Can you redesign someones portfolio, and explain what was so bad about the typography
Excellent video.
Awww, my portfolio did not get reviewed again :(
This is ridiculous.. just having to hire based on aesthetics and not really looking at their thought process and/or case study.
Well this is a reality, imagine Recruiter has 100 portfolios to check - there is literally 3-5sec per candidate.
How do we submit a portfolio for review?
Really superficial assessment for a product design hire and a quick scan. This is why hiring managers do not find good product designers
Can anybody tell me how can I submit my portfolio as well?
Out of 23, I can't see just one 3d 🤷🏽♀️
i will send you mine
What is the best page builder and theme for Wordpress?
Dropped my portfolio but it wasn’t reviewed
Hi fluxacademy, please can i send my portfolio to you for review
what's wrong with your browser or internet? the latency is everywhere, it's disturbing to watch the video like that.

"I'm a UX/UI - FullStack developer - AI Sofware Engineer " would that title be too much to describe someone who has multiple technical skills ?
