Thanks for playing my save Legend! I was controlling large army in my attempts and yeah, I was getting overwhelmed. I couldn't re-man my walls like you could and lots of avoidable mistakes were slipping through, compounding by the end of the battle. That trick of setting up your general behind the fort is awesome, I'm going to try that myself in future. Thanks for showing me the ways of a true total war legend, I learnt a lot! Go watch Volund impossible battles. There is soo much you could have done better to have a better set up.
-In very hard/legendary, bows are crap, and enemy bows shots are soo deadly. Only real use is to inflict asimetrical damage, by shoting from the walls and them not shooting at you. You do this by getting on the walls later, when they already have set a target on another unit, inside or outside the forth. If the target moves (your units) the shots dont land...
-That being said, you should spam more melee infantry than bows. As legend said, bows are insanelly boosted.
-Only some units have upgraded armor... should be most of them. At least the objective. Or like +4 attack +2 armor for yari ashigaru is pretty OP. Same for +20 accuracy for bow ashigaru. You can use experienced units to replenish upgraded ones by draging one on the other in the campaign map.
-You can provoke uprisings to happen, to train your units in a controlled enviroment. If there are no units in the province, the uprising is small. The more units you have, the bigger the uprising. Max is a stack of 20. You can easily wipe that with autoresolve if you got 2 stacks. I say this, because even if you control a large territory, your units are pretty unexperienced.
-You dont really need to expand that much. You already control very rich provinces. They should be very upgraded, the ones with very fertile soild shold get a metsuke, fully upgraded on city managment, for extra income, and an upgraded market. The ones with a bonus to units, dedicated only for units. This is optimization.
-You are the one that should choose the battles you want to fight. Would have been easier in a larger castle. Most cities in general are disponsable, and recapturable. So you can wait in the forests instead of staying in casles. Then going 2 vs 1. 4 times.

The main general is the one with the fanciest flag (the crescent-shaped thing on top) so you did hit him but he didn't die. In Shogun 2 I have found that the enemy general will sometimes be the only survivor and will slink away unscathed. However, for the player sometimes your general's unit will get hit by a single arrow and your daimyo falls over dead in what can only be categorized as a shameful display.

He definitely died, because his unit was wiped out. The aide de camp just didn't feel like mentioning it for some reason. Generals get extra hitpoints the higher rank they get. I've regularly seen Rank 6 Oda Nobuhide escape death by himself time and time again after his entire bodyguard died.
Interesting fact, generals cannot be killed unless their bodyguard has lost at least half its men. It means that, on ultra unit scale, you can use your generals as aggressively as possible so long as you keep their number above 20.

A tip for using matchlocks on walls: Only 1st row of them are actually shooting, so you want to spread them by clicking and holding move order and while holding drag it across the wall, they should spread in 1 row as wide as game allows, then you press "R" to make them run.
After matchlock are in their position you can add bows to utilize 2nd row

One way to identify the actual general/unit commanding the army in Shogun 2 is to look out for a unique icon at the top of the unit's battlefield banner. For example, in this battle at 17:45, you can see the dismounted Hattori general has a islam style crescent at the top of his banner/flag while the family member that is commanding your army has a fan/leaf like icon at the top of his banner/flag. This icon tends to be random for each battle and can change for the same general across battles but the commanding unit on each army (can be any unit non family infantry/cavalry etc) for sure will have some type of icon

One trick you can use in defensive sieges like this is to 'pull' enemy archers closer by having them shoot at idle units. The AI loves to target units that aren't manning the walls, and prefers not to swap targets, so if you leave a less-important unit right behind the walls to get shot at, you can then run them back a bit and the enemy archers will move up to chase, entering your killzone. Especially useful if you're using lower-range matchlocks.

I really recommend it, but you gotta approach Shogun 2 a bit differently. It's a very Rock, Paper, Scissors game and everything, from units in your army to what buildings you build in your city have to be very decisive. You don't have money to spare like in Medieval 2 and usually battles and wars end in a single meaningful move that could make or break your entire campaign.
If you can get the hang of how Shogun 2 works, it's simply the best game of the entire series, where being smart and tactical will be HIGHLY rewarded.

Love forward deploying on that left hill-side with Naginata or Katana samurai and charging down the hillside before the opponent can organise. They'll swiftly take out the forces there, and can then get back up to help the fort fight, or stay in the trees to ambush reinforcements coming up the hill. The problem with that idea is that most of the time (70% imo) they won't do a naval invasion. They'll try to get to you by land. Small nitpick - for gun units in Shogun II when placed on the wall only the first row will fire. To maximize damage output its best to spread them on the wall to only stand in the front row (click and drag mouse when placing them on wall positions), and fill the back row with archers or melee units.
Ideally you want to cover walls with front row guns, back row melee, and then archers behind the wall in normal or loose formation to shoot over the wall.
The placement can be a bit finnicky though.

Shogun 2, the only TW game where units actually shoot from the castle walls. It's amazing that they still can't manage that in WH3. But we got "dockable areas", so it's fine, right?

What i love bout legndary shgun 2, is ho the a.i gets 1,200 "koku"(Cock-U) free per settlement they own per turn. That's how thy field those doomstacks. I love it. Legendary shogun 2 makes you earn the campaign win.
AS an avid shogun 2 plyer, the battle you are in, as choskobe isn't TOO hard. It's far from easy, but a good legendary player should win it most times. With the choskobe (and the christian faction) it is about creating kill zones for your missile units. Yari spear walls, micro management of infntry, micro of bow. Bows at the walls, retreat before enemy climbs. referably another line behind them on the higher walls both covering the retreat, and if you like the field, yari ash spear wall ready to block the enemy in the new kill zone.
Fire and maneuver. Fire and maneuver.
Thir strategy is very similair to venice, M2tw in hard siege defences. Setting up kill zones for your crossbows.
Then you want to hit the fire arrows en masse at single units when they get close to wavering.
Keep your katana samurai as flankers to your yari ash, to also break morale.
At the last castle tier, you want you will likely need to back yourself into a corner, and use all infantry to form a new line to defend missiles.
I love this game so much, the only 3 clans i hate are Oda, Tokugawa (Gross) and Mori, on legendary. Mori, considering naval combat is useless on legendary unless you get european sails + cannon, and tokugawa, diplomacy is heavily weighted against you on legendary so their boosts are pretty weak, and Oda is basically a constant do or die campaign, with enemies on every side.

Best part about shogun two is that the AI would actually send concentrated force at defended castles and it leads to epic siege battles. This is completely different in my experience from TW:WH where the AI just wants to avoid your armies at all costs and soak up any and all undefended territory it can get it's grubby little mits on.

If the moral of a defending unit inside the fort is very low and it would otherwise break, you can run them out of the fort and so they will break. they are only immune to moral loss inside the fort. On the other side, these samurai had a really high level, propably to much base moral for breaking without getting hit.

I never liked how fragile General units are and how punishing it is to lose them. Almost every time I've ever sent a General's Bodyguard into combat, I've wound up losing my leader. The army leader is just an individual in that unit, and an unlucky arrow barrage can kill him even if the rest of the unit is still alive.
Shogun 2 was my first Total War game, and that experience is part of why I spent all of my time in Warhammer 1 and the first half of my time in Warhammer 2 being afraid to actually use my leader units in battle.

    • @edersonnico
      @edersonnico 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well, the game outright screams the general can easily die:
"Your general is in great danger milord, he is too important to lose!"
They are a tad bit stronger than regular units but still regular humans.
Personally I prefer this old way, leaders gives strong support bonus to the troops while there is the need to protect them and even the opportunity to massively weaken the enemy by killing their commander. The superhero generals from the modern titles is something kinda weird, I remember seeying a video of a dude defeating and army of 10,000 men with only 5 dudes in 3 kingdoms.

    • @musclegeek1991

It's always somewhat amusing to me that the morale of units is so bad in Shogun 2 that the break so quickly, and army losses make entire full strength units break in the face of units they can beat. I've even had my units break and rout when the battle is already won and I'm just running down fleeing troops - given that they're 'supposed' to be the culture for whom surrender is more shameful than death. Makes the battles super short and a bit unsatisfying at times.
