    I have a friend who loves this movie, and when I told her that the actors weren't good singers, she promptly said that THAT was one of the main reasons why the movie was so relatable, because it made it feel like anyone could be living that story. It made her feel like it was tangible, and she could see herself there, so that's why she liked it. I guess I see her point. But I'd still prefer good singing. I guess I prefer to imagine myself singing well.

    I watched this because the quotes from this review on rotten tomatoes, "I have so many feelings about how much I hated this movie" and "It was a pretentious waste of my time" were perfectly on point.
    It's been a few years and I'm still upset people praised this awful movie as much as they did.

      I thought THIS TRAIN WRECK won 6 Oscars over best picture Moonlight which won 3???
      Shut the front door! The piano scene vs. The diner scene? Both couples should've kissed BUT NO! Moonlight has better story, acting and editing (they both lost to the underrated Hacksaw Ridge btw). Tripe. I don't care. I really don't.

    Nailed it. This movie was such a trainwreck. I liked it a little better after that end scene when I realized the plot structure was stolen from Les Parapluies de Cherbourg -- but then I was also annoyed that it was unoriginal. At first I was annoyed at the mixing, but then I started to wonder if the sound engineer did it on purpose to hide the terrible singing.
    But at the end, I think it was definitely her fantasy. The whole montage ends with a close-up on her looking freaked and about to cry because she's been thinking about what she missed.

    What I love about you guys' reviews is that I can totally disagree with you on a movie but still find your review and your take on the movie extremely interesting and entertaining and a great discussion. I loved La La Land so much but while I disagreed with a lot of what you said I still really enjoyed watching this review. I respected your opinions and thought it was an interesting discussion and also it was fucking hilarious.

    • @PoptartPockets
      @PoptartPockets 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Likewise!! I loved La La Land! It was an exaggeration of puppy love and a commentary on superficiality. It was never really about LA, or the accuracy of the dancing, or the depth of Sebastian’s artistry. It was about the ridiculousness of overlooking clear incompatibilities. All of the spectacle was supposed to be so dramatic in order to contrast their reality during moments of dialogue. Even with the comment about Rebel Without A Cause, it seemed to hammer home that these characters do not understand eachother or themselves as well as they try to come across. The relationship burns as quickly as it begins, and they equally let themselves get carried away by things that excite them, instead of focusing on what fulfills them.

    I was raised here in LA and I really wanted to like this movie. I'm down for a musical like sure! I watched both seasons of Smash when they aired. (I was in it for Anjelica Houston) but this movie... it was such a stereotypical transplant experience. Like "wow LA is magical and wonderful and no one has problems and we drink expensive coffee and smoothies all the time". Like it needed to take itself less seriously. Just like have magical dance numbers and don't make me worry about your problems and it will be fabulous like Hello Dolly. Or It needed to be more like RENT where they're fighting gentrification (because the theatre closed) and he's black(?) and he has to save Jazz and his grandfather played with some jazz legend or something (like why does he like Jazz?) . And it gets into that. This movie needed to make up its mind. Do I care about their problems or not? Because if I do, let me care about them but if I don't, make it more fabulous so I don't worry about that.

    OHHH man I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that hated this movie!!! Emma Stone's weird-sad-whisper singing made me so angry! Also they didn't change her appearance whatsoever for the 5 years later part; since it's an ~homage~ to Old Hollywood could they not have put in some hair extensions and given her Veronica Lake hair for the part where she's famous??? Ugh.

    La la land is trash... In other musicals (for example Chicago) they hired famous actors as well, but the actors learned how to sing, they learned how to dance... But this?? Emma Stone couldn't even walk in heels!! And the tap dance? They were putting on tap dance shoes on and in the end they weren't even dancing!!
    I'm so mad, and now 14 Oscar nominations??

    I also have a question about this movie, which has bugged me for a while: when the main couple is still fighting, they meet at a party where the guy is playing in an eighties tribute band, and the girl requests I Ran by A Flock of Seagulls, just to spite him. Why would that song in particular be such a humiliation for a "real musician" to play? Is it somehow supposed to be so much worse that other eighties songs? I like I Ran as much as most new wave classics. So what's the joke? What am I missing?

    My biggest problem with this movie was covered in the first few minutes of this video. If they are going to hire two people who can't sing or dance very well, WHY would they give a solo song to a small supporting role and cast John Legend. He blows every other performance away. I don't understand.

    This fucking review was Errrrrrrrthang! I cannot agree any more. I feel this marks the end of Art. You can challenge yourself in life, but YOU CAN'T DO EVERYTHING, Cuts in the arts are coming, There is no respect for artistry, technique. The classics had trained song and dance people!!!!!!! He is a jazz musician? WTF! Hollywood can throw a stick down 42nd street and find a leading man and ingenue to play these roles. I also blame corporatism and capitalism! I'm watching Dancer in the Dark again, that's a true contemporary musical.

    How did Emma Stone's mediocre singing win the Oscar over the stunting pretty Isabelle Huppert?!

  • @aramis5301
    @aramis5301 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I didn't HATE the movie but I totally understand all the reasons why you hated it... Especially: "The problem is that they cast people who can neither sing nor dance"... So true! I just don't understand this trend. Same thing for Les Miserables or Phantom of the Opera. I mean, a musical is supposed to have good music and/or dancing, that's the point of a musical, right? If you need famous people with pretty faces in the main roles, at least, as you said... DUB THEM. And have the supporting roles do the amazing dancing and singing. That's what they did in West Side Story and honestly the result was pretty damn good!

      They disagree with each other often. It's not because they do it in a civilized manner that they don't express diverging opinions. Saying they always say the same thing is just low-brow troll tbh.

    I normally listen to the soundtrack to a film before I see it to see if I'll enjoy it. I was calling bullshit on this movie when there were only like twelve songs and only two of them were decent. I was confused as to how a musical could have so much praise and so few songs, much less good songs.

    I did not hate this movie but I do agree with a lot of the criticism you had for it. I was personallt happy that Moonlight won Best Picture over it, not only because it was my favorite of the films nominated but I just really did not want La La Land to win. I always have one or two movies that I don't want to win and in the lastest Oscars, it was Three Billboards and The Post.

    In addition to your examples of WAY better films that comment on the pretentious, ostentatious nature of LA and celebrity culture, you guys should also add A Star Is Born. There are also movies that take place in New York that basically do the same thing, just from a New York lens; for example, All About Eve, Birdman, and Inside Llewyn Davis (the extremely underrated Cohen Brothers movie starring Oscar Issac).

    ok, so here's the thing, i've been avoiding watching this review of yours bc i was scared. i know you guys are west coasters and i was afraid you guys would somehow be swayed by the "glitz and the glamour" of this movie (idk where any of that was but people tell me it's there) BUT THANK GOD I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN NOT TO WORRY THANK GOD YOU HATE THIS TOO. Me and my sister are two die-hard new yorkers, we love broadway, musicals, etc but we absolutely HATED. THIS. MOVIE. i leaned over to my sister at one point and was like "...do you hate this?" and she was like "omg yes, i'm so mad rn" we spent the next hour drinking martinis and bad mouthing it until it was over. i could write a dissertation on how much i hate this movie from the TERRIBLE costume design, to the fact that you have movie stars who can't sing & dance when really you needed to be casting "nobodys" who CAN sing & dance; and don't even get me started on the white man saves jazz plotline that needed to get the fuck out forever, the dumb ass "romance" that was pretty weird and unhealthy and i never was invested in, the bizarre music, that crazy random neon lighting in their apartment that just made me feel like i had somehow done a drug far worse than gin, that shitty first dance number that's totally backlight and chaotic and from a setting perspective just shows how gross and disgusting LA is from the get so why the fuck do i care ? i hate this movie i hate this movie I HATE THIS FUCKING MOVIE it's a hollywood circle jerk at best but like, when they're old and have no sperm left ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Um? Actually, they DON'T "first meet" in the nightclub where he's playing crappy Christmas music! They really first meet on the highway, after that rather lengthy car-damaging dance sequence, when traffic starts moving but she doesn't. He blows his 1980's "Buick Riviera" (NOT "THUNDERBIRD", ANDREW!) convertible horn, she gives him "the finger", he pulls up alongside and scowls, then zooms off... AHHHHHHH! I feel bettah, BLANCHE! 💋

    "Annie Hall the musical but with terrible songs" hits the nail on the fucking head! out of interest, have you seen whiplash, Damien Chazelle's previous film? That's an actually good, gritty portrayal of an ambitious artist, plus it gives context to goofy, finger-clicking J.K Simmons

  • @PoptartPockets

    On the contrary, I actually really loved La La Land! It was an exaggeration of puppy love and a commentary on superficiality. It was never really about LA, or the accuracy of the dancing, or the depth of Sebastian’s artistry. It was about the ridiculousness of overlooking clear incompatibilities. I agree that these characters were pretentious, but it was to highlight their proclivities toward overlooking their flaws. All of the spectacle was supposed to be so dramatic in order to contrast their reality during moments of dialogue. Even with the comment about Rebel Without A Cause, it seemed to hammer home that these characters do not understand eachother or themselves as well as they try to come across. The relationship burns as quickly as it begins, and they equally let themselves get carried away by naivety instead of focusing on what fulfills them.
