My father owned one of those R2 Avantis and it was a beast in its day. Those solid lifters were just what the doctor ordered, in combination w/ the Paxton S/C. Pop did some carb tuning and some minor port work on the heads and that Studi would turn 12 second quarters all day long. His best ET was 11:89 @ 7K RPMs against a '67 Barracuda w/ a solid lifter 273 . . . w/ me in the passenger seat. Watching Pop slam the gears was a treat, as well as a great lesson on power shifting - never let your foot off the GO pedal. My mother was absolutely beside herself as we headed off to join the queue; I had never been happier. What a ride! Would love to find one of those Paxton S/Cs for my Corvair build. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Skylark was impressive, with stockish 350 running high 13's...very respectable, and she is a pillar car to boot...I like it allot. Buick 350 is a very peppy engine and lots of torque. Goes to show any vintage A body with a strong V8 and proper gears IS a musclecar. Love Olds, Buick , Pontiac....BOP rules.

🤨 I find it hard to believe the Avanti weighs 3600 lbs! That seems way high. But at least it's owner has the, uhm, 'performance wisdom' and 'style consciousness' to run skinny, family sedan-style whitewall tires on his supercharged sports car! 😩
Oh, and the Road Test magazine guys seem to be about as competent at test driving a Skylark in the 60s as the Road and Track guys were with the '68 SS396 Nova.... 🥴

    • @gt-37guy6

@@HighlanderNorth1 So I guess the Studebaker engine was ungodly heavy, really thick casting and the timing drive gear section (not chain solid drive) was very bulky and heavy. Thick fiberglass like a Glasstron boat too...lol.

Well I like bop also.owned several pontiacs. But the ,R2 was mild compared to the R3 Avanti. 400 HP top end at 178.5 MPH. Not Any bop of the era could come within 25 mph of that.
Also 0-60 under six seconds and quarter mile in lows 13s at 110 mph.
No bop of the era 63-64 could begin to match that. Probably by 1969-71 but that's 7+ years LATER.

@@gt-37guy6 The reason there were'nt more Avantis is because GMs Corvette got priority build status over poor orphan Studebaker's Avanti, made it such a low production car. They both got their bodies from the same Ashtabula, Ohio, fiberglass manufacturer!

I owned this car when I was in high school, painted it white with a black grill just like this one, the same 350-4 and turbo350 with a stall converter rebuilt with shift kit Better gearing but I don't remember what it was. Never had it at the track but we did time and run cars and we figured about 102 at about 13.5 loved that car but as fools do I let it go thinking I would get bigger better things, never did back then, took many years to get into a better car (speed wise) but even if the cars I have now are considerably faster, that will still be the "one" which will never be topped I don't think. The new stuff has the "holy crap" feel, but when you are 18 and have a car like the Buick, you just can't top it. great video and that Avanti is super snazzy too.

What's really intriguing however is the 1964 R3 super Lark. It runs 12s at 114 mph at pure stocks. That completely annihilates the buick which has a 20 year newer engine and more cubes to boot. Super Lark R3 5.5 sec 0-60,12.6-9 at114+ and tops at 150+ MPH. THAT'S
    REALLY IMPRESSIVE.

That Avanti is truly an impressive machine. But,, the most I'm paying for a twin grip differential is 42 bucks. Not a penny more! Haha! Kinda of a wealthy man's car back then. For that kinda dough though, I'd be looking at the 1963 split window Corvettes. Still, really like that Avanti. The reason they had Paxton superchargers was because Avanti owned the company. I'd still take the Buick 1st.

That Avanti sounded really good idling! I would hate to lose a race because of red lighting! I used to have a 63 Ford Falcon that came out with a 6 cyclinder 3 speed on the column and I dropped a 289 HP in it and put a 3 speed hurst shifter in the floor! That car would bark the tires in 2nd and 3rd! I didn’t like the shift pattern on that transmission, reverse was straight up from first and I destroyed the transmission 2 times by shifting from first into reverse by mistake!

Buicks don't need to be loud to be fast. Growing up a buddy had a 1970 GS455 Convertible. Purred like a kitten but would darn near rip the tires off when you hit it. Someone had put an oversize oil pan, and a big Holley carb, but smooth as silk. We used to race motorcycles with it - and pissed many off (bikes were not very fast in the 80s - yet).

Interesting to note the announcer said Buick was turbocharged. With 61 more cubes and weighing less the mild R2 , the Avanti is extremely impressive.

But-- the R3 Avanti shuts down the newer buick with ease .

    • @ronbrock6153

@@ronbrock6153 gotcha. Read the entire pre race blurb and that came clear. Nevertheless less a smaller engine 15 years older than Buicks engine and 8 YEARS older production car clearly shows the Stude superiority over big 3. And as to style? Well Studebaker is decades ahead in design and class.
Then of course is the Avanti R3. Running low 13s at 108 mph in 63 era meant there were VERY few big 3 cars that could match it.
      And the the top ends?.
Avanti R2 at 158 mph with a 331 rear and the Avanti R3 @ 178.5 MPH -- no big 3 could come EVEN CLOSE.

High 13’s from a almost stock Buick engine? Pretty impressive that’s big block performance from a lowly 350 Buick old man’s engine I had a 70 junior gs 350 stock just a rebuilt engine no headers no gear no nitrious a lowly quadrajoke carb and 10.5 to 1 comp only don’t know if it ran high 13’s never went to the track only street fun but I susprised a bunch of people with it beating quite a few guys with it as it ran 0-60 in 6 sec flat which should be high 13’s to low 14’s right? And that was in 1985 a year later engine came out and went rebuild again with all kennebell performance mods like big cam more compression 11.25-1. Port and polish stock heads carter thermoquad carb edelbrock intake headers recurved dist. 3.91 to 1 rear gear posi with a 3000 rpm stall never went to the track but what a monster it was on big street tires I think l60-15 Goodyear tires it would light em up all the was through first and 2 nd gear into third @ 90 mph a beast probably would run low 12’s then on race gas!

Had a new 68 AMX with the 343 engine and auto. Over the next couple of years, changed the rear gears from 3.15 to 3.73, an Edelbrock R4B and Cyclone headers. That 343 was so underated, raced a 70 390 AMX with 4-speed, just could not pull out in front enough to beat it. Love them AMC's.

Sorry but I think the Avanti is one of the ugliest cars ever made!! Topping anything American motors ever made

It was way ahead of its time. That "ugly" front end was actually very aerodynamic, way better than any car sold back then. Contributed to its land speed record at the salt flats. I find it still in style to this day. If you want to talk ugly, pick any SUV made today. Just what is sporty about an SUV?

I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder as someone said. But man! That Avanti is just drop dead georgeous, even 60 years after the fact.
