Cool teardown. the console looks easily repairable by the end-user. It was a nice touch to have a separate flap for the harddrive space, so you're not breaking the warranty when replacing the hdd. Cooling seems a bit dubious, though I guess Sony made a couple of compromises on the overall size of the unit, the necessity of a power brick, temperature under load and noise.
actually, the cooling is much more efficient than the XBone, the unit is built into the frame rather than an individual unit, which cools efficiently being small at the same time.
Sean Williams I'm not sure what you meant by "efficiently". Due to the compactness, the smaller fan and the internal power supply, the PS4 runs an average 10-25°C warmer than the xbox one. Whether or not that is going to affect its longevity I'm not sure, but it is definitely more prone to overheating as it ages or when the fan starts deteriorating with dust and hairs.
***** Don't forget to mention that the fan is also aiming downwards, so that it's blowing heat against a surface, which if you have had a laptop with a fan like that, you'd know it can be more prone to overheating.
Jrenyar I think the fan blows air sideways, out of the back of the unit, but I'm not sure about this. A lot of modern fan-designs are different from the ones in the past. Previous fan designs indeed all blow air perpendicular to their own rotation, but a lot of modern compact fans blow horizontally across their rotation plane. Again, I'm not sure if the PS3's fan does this or not
***** Even if they have a sideways blow, when a fan points down, it will still blow down at least a little bit, which would still have a heating problem, even some modern laptops have the problem shamefully enough. I think that's why Ben sounded a little surprised when he saw the fan pointing downwards.
Its amazing how they get pretty much everything on the main board. Thats pretty much the whole machine right there, yet the unit is so much bigger because of the cooling, HDD and blu ray.
TotalyNotATH-camr _ The HD 4870 (a 2008 card) was already using GDDR5... It makes it impossible to be based on DDR4, when DDR3 was barely making into the mainstream market. So, yes, GDDR5 is DDR3 optimized for graphic processing, nothing more.

spence120 - FMC well on ps4 at least i dont see much of a change... especially when you can pop in a dsic and play unless theres an update you wannt to download.. but if not then you can pop it in and just play right off the bat... meanwhile it installs to your HD in full.. so what time will i spend waiting? 5 seconds at the load screen while it installs the important key files so i can play before the rest of the game? im good id rather save my money for something else
You can upgrade xbox one hard drive but it counts as modding and voids warranty, I don't care because I did it and now I have a 2 TB hard drive on my xbox
Marcos Santana pretty sure xb1, just like ps4, uses the sata laptop drives, and they max out at 1.5tb, i havent seen and 2tbs out there, so i gotta say that comment is crap, find me some links of a 2tb and show a vid of xbox, im pretty sure sonys doesnt allow it tho it has a max too
Could you upgrade the PS4 with any brand HDD? Provided it's 7200rpm and 2.5" like a laptop hard drive, of course, to match the Samsung one that's inside. But could you put a different brand in there and would it work? And is it possible to put an SSD or similar in? Would that have any effect? If anyone can help me out with that would be super appreciated!
gtileo True, but since you're going to download many more games than last gen (and I downloaded quite a few on my Xbox 360!) you're also going to want storage space. And a good size SSD is very expensive, maybe a lot more than the PS4 itself. So I might check if there are people interested in that, buying a PS4 with a small but fast SSD, or rather a regular HDD with more storage space.
Back in the day, consoles like the N64 and PS1 weren't compared to computers and were judged solely on games and not graphical fidelity. Where did we go wrong?
Back then PC was just starting to be more serious in games, before that it was mainly office platform and other microcomputers that had superior multimedia components (like Amiga) did better job in games (sometimes better than consoles).Don't be fooled by PC fanboys saying that PC always dominated gaming, which is false. One of the reasons why people still use Consoles is a lot longer legacy that people are used to and PC is missing (well maybe except office software :p)
Well, I remember when the ps1 first came around, the amazing graphics was the number one thing that people were talking about. People cared about graphics back then too, it's just that the console/PC war was not much of a thing.
***** Hehe, good trick trying attach "PC" label at the end of the name of a platfrom XD Commodore 64 (and beyond that) is a platfrom of it's own, and its dead long time ago, PC you got today is evolution of IBM PC (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Personal_Computer), it's called PC because platform it self was called PC. My first computer was Commodore Amiga 500+, which co-existed with PC in 90s... and i really could not call my Amiga a PC back then because it was complitly different platform incompatible to eachother and it would confuse people. Not to mention back then there was not only Commodore and PC there was ton of other microcomputers incompatible to eachother, like we got few consoles today and people call those "computers" or sometimes "micro-computers" (as ideology of it was to shrink first room size computers in to small box, thats why they been called "micro"), IBM PC simply won this war due to openness and expantibility, so much open it was no point of making something else, to level that people forgot that PC was a invidual platfrom, every manufacture simply started to make a PC hardware or left the market. IBM PC it self was for long time mainly office computer and other microcomputer did a lot better job in graphics (like mentioned Commodore 64 or Amiga which was a machine ahead of it's time), but when PC started to catch up it openness and blew everything else..
ap72sentinal whats with the "duh"? you dont know just how hypocrite microstuff can be, they could easily have sneaked different specs at the last moment
***** agreed, so far my PC is also the best choice, im gonna buy a PS4 but im sure as hell going to use my new PC more its obvious ...unless maybe Bungie's Destiny manages to make me go DEEERP like it did back in the day :)
Trust me I just got the xbox 1 last week I'm loving it and how does size and looks matter for gaming? We get more exclusives, we don't get hacked like ps4 servers are always down, we get dlc one month earlier. Now its up to you.
XPHENOM SKILLSX I'll definitely consider it then. But I'm the kinda guy that hates to choose lol I got both the ps3 and the 360. However there is one company I will no longer buy from and that's nintendo. They messed up way too much for me.
When you started tearing into it I thought, "NO!!! Not the PS4 you monster!" But by the end, all I could think was "Unboxing videos are for wusses." Thanks for the insight.
Doubt... SSD doesn't affect much of the performance of the PS4. Most of the files are just placed on the blu-ray player instead of the internal storage. Thus, ssd costs alot more than 2.5" drives... Not recommended. Unless you are running a downloaded game.
Good point. Still, the system does install at least SOME files - it probably would speed up loading times, and games like Galak-Z would certainly get a speed boost. An SSD would be more like an experiment than anything else. Though SSDs are certainly getting cheaper and cheaper, the 250 to 500 GB ones, anyway. One problem though - does the PS4 defragment itself?
Not at all, I own about 34 home consoles not to mention handhelds My comment was in regards to the hardware already being way behind computing standards
When some one tell you PC is the master race and it's better they leave something out, PC guys take more time fixing problems that come up then playing games, where on the other hand the only problem you have on the consoles is you have to wake up from your sofa to change the CD.
Yeah, playing at 4k resolution on max settings with the latest triple A games is fucking shit compared to all the screws you have to screw in and plugs you have to plug in. EUGH FUCKING PCS, THEY SHIT.
The consoles are so similar under the hood it's funny that you'd say that. This console gen sees by far the most similarity between the consoles hardware wise ever. The biggest differences are the software.
***** ps4 uses ext4 or ext3, xbone uses NTFS. You can use NTFS formatted drives and storage devices with the ps4 how ever because of the already existing drivers to utilize NTFS functionality in the linux distribution they used for the OS, same thing with the ps3. The xbone how ever I don't think can operate with ext4 formatted partitions without additional software which is not on the xbone. You would have to hack/modify the system in order to do so which shouldn't be too hard since xbone uses a modified windows 8 os.
Niaz Ali if things are still as they have been at the time of PS3 - nothing PS3 had encrypted drive. And even if not encryption, then PS3 use FFS, which is outside of microsoft grip (they even cannot do ext2 or reiserfs)
I fucking hate 5400 RPM drives. it's 2015 stop making, selling and using that shit in new products. I don't care how cheap the device is. It slows down any decent PC to a CRAWL!
+dbza uh sorry i though you are talking about some kind of a memory like the phones or sdd instead of a hdd, yh truly it will help alot if it was 7400rpm
I tried to disassemble my gh controller once but the tools I had were a bit hard to use because the screw-holes were so deep so I got very little power because I had to stick in the long end and turn with the short end and I ended up filing off the whammy-bar since it's in the way when I play since I'm a lefty.
The Jolly Good Jester what do you mean by "perform as well as a PC"? PS4 has about the same graphic performance as a GTX660, though which much beefier memory speeds. You currently can't build a cheaper computer with better specs.
***** Good point, I do agree that you can't really complain since it would be a mid-range PC. But what I mean is a home console that has top-PC grade specs. Probably what the Steambox is going to aim for?
Wow Sony designed their console so much better than Microsoft. It seems ridiculous that Xbox one runs hotter is way larger and u still have an external power brick. All in the name of extra profit . Sony build something properly then worry about pricing later. Seems Microsoft try and screw customers anyway possible with weaker hardware and poor design. Plus the whole initial fiasco over not being able to trade games and making kinect mandatory . which was only rectified after consumer backlash. I surpose what I'm trying to say is Microsoft really gives it customers the middle finger lol. And for PC users remember vista that was a middle finger to us from Microsoft to so overpriced and ran like crap.
From what I heard the Xbox One does cool better actually (it does have a massive heat sink and lots of space for airflow) but I also haven't heard of the heat a PS4 generates having any negative effects or anything.
So where are you getting the information that XB1 runs hotter?. See the XB1 runs virtually silent unlike the noisy PS4 which runs louder than my high end PC. So if you can provide a link with detailed information otherwise I will put that down to hearsay.
JAGUARCD32X The ps4 really isn't loud. If it's as loud as you try to make it out to be you should relocate it and give it better ventilation or inquire about possible issues with it. Give it a rest.
jraybay Give what a rest?. What is there to rest?. The noise the PS4 makes is ever so slightly louder than a gtx690 which is two graphics cards running in tandem on just one PCB with a single fan for cooling. I know this as I was reading from websites that have measured the noise PS4 makes in Db's and it compares with a gtx690 in noise department. That has been scientifically proven. If you don't think that's loud for hardware that uses a 16 watt low power architecture designed for tablets and netbooks paired with a lower mid range GPU then I don't know what to say. If a console using low power architecture is as loud as two GPU's using the same one fan cooling solution then I don't know what to say. I think you are being overly defensive as it's loud, many people believe it's loud. It's not like I am protesting people not to buy the device on the grounds of the noise it makes
JAGUARCD32X You really didn't need this short story reply. I originally thought you were referring to idle noises and well... the ps4 is dead silent. when the fans kick up however its obviously noticeable. Not having a brick hanging off of it may contribute to that and it's about half the size of the xbox 1, it seems.
i would assume the Power plant is down there for temperature purposes.. also your lower third placements blow! ... when checking otu the PS4 and XBOne HDDs . it covered ALL of it.. i had to watch it twice to figure out you actually HAD another HDD there. other than that .. pretty awesome clip!
did they include the audio into the apu , or is there a chipset controlling it , understood that ps4 had the same type of audio that their r7 and newer apus had in them. wifi chip should include the bluetooth as well
Sony and Microsoft should come together to create (Playstation X) Xbox plus playstation and it should have 10000MB of Memory. And should have 4K HD RETINA AND LED DISPLAY pluss runs all xbox 360&xbox one and ps1 ps2 and ps3 ps4. Games all old games should be remastered to 1080p and the PlayStation X should have an eco friendly Tesla Electrified gaming engine.
tom johnson that will never happen unless sony buys the rights of producing consoles from xbox or xbox buys sony. just enjoy gaming whiles its still a console war because when its no competition left they will be able to do anything like DRM always online getting rid of disks and making crap games. whiles its still competition we should be safe from that.
Wow, your parents shouldn't let you get on the internet, you're way too young. I'm not gonna bash you too hard because your entire comment was ridiculous but seriously... 10000MB = 10GB, that's going to last...
***** I have never heard of that happening, and besides the PS4 runs hotter because the RAM they use. P.S. it would have to be upwards of 300 degrees for either console to do that.
***** did you see the tear down to the xbox, its the same size MB, at least research before. and honestly if your going to believe a Pic on the inter net you shouldent be talking. P.D. there is no paint on the xbox or PS4 they both use black plastic. using paint is stupid.

well on ps4 at least i dont see much of a change... especially when you can pop in a dsic and play unless theres an update you wannt to download.. but if not then you can pop it in and just play right off the bat... meanwhile it installs to your HD in full.. so what time will i spend waiting? 5 seconds at the load screen while it installs the important key files so i can play before the rest of the game? im good id rather save my money for something else
It will barely increase r/w speeds as ps4 is still using sata 2, price for performance will just be a waste
You can upgrade xbox one hard drive but it counts as modding and voids warranty, I don't care because I did it and now I have a 2 TB hard drive on my xbox
Marcos Santana
pretty sure xb1, just like ps4, uses the sata laptop drives, and they max out at 1.5tb, i havent seen and 2tbs out there, so i gotta say that comment is crap, find me some links of a 2tb and show a vid of xbox, im pretty sure sonys doesnt allow it tho it has a max too
Could you upgrade the PS4 with any brand HDD? Provided it's 7200rpm and 2.5" like a laptop hard drive, of course, to match the Samsung one that's inside. But could you put a different brand in there and would it work?
And is it possible to put an SSD or similar in? Would that have any effect? If anyone can help me out with that would be super appreciated!
Hi Dennis! You might find a better audience to your question on the Ben Heck Show Community : ow.ly/FgstW
The Ben Heck Show Thank you, sir! I'll make sure to spend some time on there.
Dennis Z you can put any 2.5" drive inside SSD HDD sítě dont matter and brand dont matter
IamEld3st It'll take some courage for me to cough up the money but I do want to experiment with it. Thank you.
gtileo True, but since you're going to download many more games than last gen (and I downloaded quite a few on my Xbox 360!) you're also going to want storage space. And a good size SSD is very expensive, maybe a lot more than the PS4 itself. So I might check if there are people interested in that, buying a PS4 with a small but fast SSD, or rather a regular HDD with more storage space.
the entire video sounds like he needs to clear his throat badly.
I LOVE the Wii's slot-loading drive. I've yet to use a slot-loader as nice and buttery smooth as that one. If only it worked with DVDs and Blu-Rays...
The original "the Fly" movie came out in 1958 and I saw it around 1970 and set a speed record for the run home afterwards lol
IBM PC it self was for long time mainly office computer and other microcomputer did a lot better job in graphics (like mentioned Commodore 64 or Amiga which was a machine ahead of it's time), but when PC started to catch up it openness and blew everything else..
heh i guess the PS4 really is more powerful than the X1 overall
ap72sentinal
whats with the "duh"? you dont know just how hypocrite microstuff can be, they could easily have sneaked different specs at the last moment
xGoodOldSmurfehx lol ass backwards
xGoodOldSmurfehx dont worry they're just fanboys dont listen to fanboys.. they just wanna fight you and make u feel bad ;(
Yet X1 is focused on multimedia. Your choice if you want gaming or multimedia
*****
agreed, so far my PC is also the best choice, im gonna buy a PS4 but im sure as hell going to use my new PC more its obvious
...unless maybe Bungie's Destiny manages to make me go DEEERP like it did back in the day :)
7:50 is that two people kissing?
What a guy, followed his tear down and repaired my PS4.
i loved this ps4 tear down
i watch all the video in i dont understand what he was talking about but it was fun :D
Do you know what a Blower is?
von Habsburg
yeah. ill just say ive lost a lot of money
Ben Heck, 2 things
1: the ps4 has GDDR5 ram
2: That was not a back USB port
It was for extensions i.e. Playstation camera
Playstation4pro tear down
At least he recorded the tear down. Now all he has to do is rewind it to put it back together. Good thinking.
the custom chip next to the Northbridge is a Secondary CPU for background tasks and Downloading stuff when the ps4 is on standby...
I think he means GDDR5 ram. Thats graphics ram DDR ram is like PC ram and its max is DDR3
Makes alot more sense
you're right, he did mean gddr 5 ^^
Blade towards you when you remove the stickers?
Thats how you lose fingers.
Not really...
One death is cheaper than two... *Life Note*
So my PS4 comes in 13 days, that means I don't have one yet, but by some reason I was getting chills and goosebumps while watching him tear it.
This is a Beginning of new Top TH-cam Channel Keep up!!
Great Vid!
Woah, Sony beats Microsoft easy for design under there.
I agree.
Sony has engineers that know their work
Mitsuru Kirijo reminds me of WW2 Shermans; very cheap to make; easily breaks -PS4 Owner
Joselito Pancho What are you talking about?
Joselito Pancho First Xbox 360 I had red ringed, 2nd one did, and I didn't bother to buy a 3rd
Should I get a PS4 or an XBOXOne? I heard the xboxone can't perform as good as the ps4 ... is that right?
Xbox is better
XPHENOM SKILLSX Thanks for your feedback. TBH I think I'll just get both. Buy a few busted up ones on ebay and repair them.
If you have the money then go for it.
When you started tearing into it I thought, "NO!!! Not the PS4 you monster!" But by the end, all I could think was "Unboxing videos are for wusses." Thanks for the insight.
I like how you explain what each chip does. no one really does that.
00:24 It says ps4 teardown and ps4 access controller written on his board so he must have heard of it before
but will it blend ?
You can bet that sooner or later someone's going to slam an SSD in there...
Why not?lol
Randolph White Please leave and never come back.
Sean Willmore If you're downloading your games instead of buying them on discs I imagine it would have a pretty big boost in performance!
This show is so painfully cheesy at times
he said the Playstation was held together by magic, remember on the playstation 2, Magicgate memory card holder
Very interesting. i really liked how you went over the components on the motherboard. super cool. thanks.
After watching the PS4 and the XBONE being torn down, I am even less interested in overpaying for outdated hardware
They are more powerful than wii u, and way more powerful than ps3 and xbox 360. The only exception is if you're a pc gamer.
CorkyBurrito pssst, im guessing he's a pc gamer
Not at all, I own about 34 home consoles not to mention handhelds
My comment was in regards to the hardware already being way behind computing standards
CorkyBurrito Yes they are more powerful than 9 year old consoles, that doesn't change the fact that it's still outdated hardware.
Incandescent EXACTLY
I like this dude
When some one tell you PC is the master race and it's better they leave something out, PC guys take more time fixing problems that come up then playing games, where on the other hand the only problem you have on the consoles is you have to wake up from your sofa to change the CD.
Yeah, playing at 4k resolution on max settings with the latest triple A games is fucking shit compared to all the screws you have to screw in and plugs you have to plug in. EUGH FUCKING PCS, THEY SHIT.
I smell bullshit!You are wrong!
" They write Sony Computer Entertainment inside like they know you'll open it!" I laughed so hard when I saw that!
Can you please make an led light and console with faders that plug into the main also with momentarily buttons ps please tell me any thoughts
Hey Ben can You build a PC a ps4 and a xbox one in one case That would be awsome
Correction: Its GDDR5, there is no DDR5.
I used a hammer personally.
lol mate
xD
Humsamuel I use a wrecking ball
yup, might be faster.
All that Power inside such small console, Its truly amazing.
Thank you. Was looking for the screws and you made it alot easier.
It's quite shocking how far ahead PS4 tech wise is compared to the Xbone ....
lol Xbone, combination of xbox one
The consoles are so similar under the hood it's funny that you'd say that. This console gen sees by far the most similarity between the consoles hardware wise ever. The biggest differences are the software.
Who cares, unless you're in college you can probably afford both.
wanswers Well PS4 hasn't a weak ass 7770 inside , or cheap DDR3 .... so no , they are not similar at all.
***** Considering neither has any decent games it's all moot.
2019????? Anybody
I am here in 2020 😂
serb nope im to late
xboxone & ps4 same harddrive? CONSPIRACY CONFRIMED... They are working together to force gamers to pay to play online multiplayer...
so what will happen if you put a ps4 hard drive into a xbox 1 or a xbox1's hard drive into a ps4
Niaz Ali you just have to format them, they are IDENTICAL.. ..
Niaz Ali if things are still as they have been at the time of PS3 - nothing
PS3 had encrypted drive. And even if not encryption, then PS3 use FFS, which is outside of microsoft grip (they even cannot do ext2 or reiserfs)
@ Ben Heck, how do folks change the little round battery when it runs out (13:10) ?
4:40 6 years later it’s finally being a thing, here’s hoping it’s good 🤞
LESTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it me or did I enjoy watching him remove the PS4 apart ??
I fucking hate 5400 RPM drives. it's 2015 stop making, selling and using that shit in new products. I don't care how cheap the device is. It slows down any decent PC to a CRAWL!
+dbza
Raid 0 that Sh@t!
+dbza are you stupid what do you want them to give you
7200RPM hard drives minimum
+dbza uh sorry i though you are talking about some kind of a memory like the phones or sdd instead of a hdd, yh truly it will help alot if it was 7400rpm
Ahmed Zain np I was talking about laptops that still come with slow shitty 5400 rpm drives
I tried to disassemble my gh controller once but the tools I had were a bit hard to use because the screw-holes were so deep so I got very little power because I had to stick in the long end and turn with the short end and I ended up filing off the whammy-bar since it's in the way when I play since I'm a lefty.
Everything's so well arranged. Bravo! Sony!
Please make a PS4 laptop!
Why can't companies just make a console equal to a medium/high-end PC?
To keep the price as low as possible.
What part of the PS4 is different from a medium/high-end PC?
***** The fact that it doesn't exactly perform as well as a PC would.
Can you make a super computer with some raspberry pi's? Please? PS: I subed :D
take A LOT of raspberry pi's to make a supercomputer lol
It's been done pretty successfully by a lot of people.
Yeah, what kalywonkas said.
JZBEAST64 It's not nearly that simple
Thnx for doing this. Was interesting to see the insides of my console.
+Michael Blackkatt
thats what she said!
13:55 He mistakenly said the the secondary ARM processor is the encoder chip.
just don't do the "acting" scenes anymore, that stuff is terrible.
DerUnbekannte 😂
Not having a brick hanging off of it may contribute to that and it's about half the size of the xbox 1, it seems.
woot
IM SUPER EXCITED THAT BEN HECK HAS HIM OWN SHOW I DIDNT KNOW THIS LOL LOVE THIS DUDE
i would assume the Power plant is down there for temperature purposes.. also your lower third placements blow! ... when checking otu the PS4 and XBOne HDDs . it covered ALL of it.. i had to watch it twice to figure out you actually HAD another HDD there. other than that .. pretty awesome clip!
i feel like this guy doesn't care about playstation
+LaDainion Baker I think he cares more about tearing it apart to look.
Portable PS4!
such a cheesy beginning xD
did they include the audio into the apu , or is there a chipset controlling it , understood that ps4 had the same type of audio that their r7 and newer apus had in them. wifi chip should include the bluetooth as well
Good video mate. But u missed to show some part like removal of the fan connector from the motherboard.
+tom johnson damn your stupid
annnd the price is going to be jaw dropping ;)
Wow, your parents shouldn't let you get on the internet, you're way too young. I'm not gonna bash you too hard because your entire comment was ridiculous but seriously... 10000MB = 10GB, that's going to last...
Still can't believe that the Xbox one and ps4, have amd hardware. I was expecting a good nvidia GPU.
Make xbox one portable
***** the only reason the XB1 is bigger is because it has much better airflow. watch his tear down of it.
The Red Shoto Wasn't there a photo floating around the 'net about how the thermal exhaust was melting the vent plastic?
***** I have never heard of that happening, and besides the PS4 runs hotter because the RAM they use. P.S. it would have to be upwards of 300 degrees for either console to do that.
www.spawnfirst.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Residue2.jpg
This is what I'm referring to, and it appears fake the more I look at it.
***** did you see the tear down to the xbox, its the same size MB, at least research before. and honestly if your going to believe a Pic on the inter net you shouldent be talking. P.D. there is no paint on the xbox or PS4 they both use black plastic. using paint is stupid.
Damn this guy is nerdy...
Dan Elliot Sure. You're a bot.
