Dan Lilker (Nuclear Assault, SOD), Curt Smith (Tears For Fears), dUg Pinnick (King's X), Paul Raven (Killing Joke, Prong), Paul Barker (Ministry), Trevor Dunn (Mr Bungle), Oliver Riedel (Rammstein). All incredible bassists, all incredibly underrated and deserve a video
Robert, Jason and Rex are some of my all time favorites going way back. Mike Inez most specifically on “Jar of Flies” is some real interesting and inspirational playing.
@@jorgealfonsostelling5021 thats what i said bro! That he needed to be here, and lo and behold, he was! 😁. I was very happy to see him here! Prob didnt word myself correctly
Rudy has been playing in the Guess Who for the last few years and at 70 he's still a beast. I went to see the band a year ago and they put on a great show. Rudy was up there dressed in black and looking for all the world like a glam rocker; the lead singer Derek Sharp noted that Rudy had the best wardrobe of the members. Dude was up there laying it down to both the harder tracks like American Woman and the calmer songs like These Eyes. Rudy Sarzo is still the real deal.
@@thiagoborges892 not mentioning JPJ in reference to this video's underrated theme. Iv'e been mentioning him since previous videos to remind him to do a vid on him.
Dee Dee Ramone and Tommy Stinson should be on this list. Dee Dee pioneered fast all-downstroke playing and Stinson was a huge part of the Replacements’ sound and was a member of Guns N’ Roses
I love your work Paul . The work you put into letting us people know about underated bassists about great bass players habits is an absolute gift to us . Thank you 🙏
You named some great bass players. You brought up some interesting points i never would have thought of. Great information to help with my progression. Thank you Paul
I have to add in Paul D’Amour, mainly for his sound on the earliest Tool records. Justin Chancellor gets a ton of praise for his atmospheric tone and jangly, octave-with-delay that really fills out the soundspace, but Paul had this clanky, bright, harsh grit I’ve never heard another bassist even come close to nailing. The scooped tone with bright strings, the right amount of gain, and banging HARD with a pick near the bridge pickup gives him such a thick but rattly tone, only enhanced by the occasional addition of some chorus (or flanger? maybe a mix of both?). His harmonics during the chorus-like sections of Intolerance ring out cleverly. Sober’s clanky chords with that harsh scooped tone that still has the full bottom end to give it some meat is iconic. And you just can’t pass up Cold And Ugly (Live), his bass solo at 2:17 with the modulation is absolutely unreal. I’m gushing a bit, but early Tool is still just one of my favorite sounds to enjoy and Paul is probably my biggest tonal inspiration as a bass player. Even in his current work, you can still hear his distinct tone and style. Love the dude’s sound.
Oh and it goes without saying - If you ever do a video or writeup on how to sound like his early work, I’d freak out. I’d love to have another person’s perspective on him.
Right off the bat Rex Brown of Pantera ( the band that redefined Heavy Metal ) . He was the member that didn't get nearly the recognition he deserved . Let's be honest his amazing sense of tone , playing and knowing how fill the sound out is a major reason Pantera never needed a second guitarist !
Barbarism begins at home, This charming man, bigmouth strikes again, all great basslines i made myself learn by ear in the 90's when i was learning to play.
There are so many great bass-players that doesn’t get the recognition they deserve. But I’m very glad you included Jason Newsted as he often falls between the chairs, always in the shadow of Cliff Burton but was there for the great break-through albums, which makes him well known for having been in Metallica but overlooked as a musician.
Definitely agree with Jason, Billy, Alex James and Rex, all absolutely awesome players who all absolutely kick ass and here are some other bassists I’d include that I feel are super underrated - Peter Steele (Type O Negative) - Kim Deal (Pixies) - Krist Novoselic (Nirvana, mostly because people only talk about Kurt and Dave) - Heath (X Japan, great Japanese metal band that I highly recommend and that intro bass solo on Endless Rain is incredible) - “Evil” Jared Hasselhoff (Bloodhound Gang, they may be a weird band but some of the bass lines he’s come up with are really good) - Shavo Odadjian (System of a Down, like with Nirvana people mostly know either Serj Tankian or Daron Malakian) - Colin Greenwood (Radiohead) - Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters, Sunny Day Real Estate) - Paul Grey (Slipknot (RIP)) - Trevor Bolder (David Bowie) - Paul D’Amour (Tool) - Tommy Shannon (Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble) - Scott Reeder (Kyuss) - Fat Mike (NOFX) - Matt Freeman (Rancid) - Ken Casey (Dropkick Murphys)

Greg Chaisson , Andy Fraser, Leon Wilkerson, Rob Grange, Ronnie Lane, Paul Harwood, Peter Cowling etc.... You sure do have some cool bass players on here. Mick Karn is my current fave but he's more pop rock.
Thanks for Ratt, SkidRow and Slaughter. If you are ever able to do a separate video on Dana Strum I would appreciate it so much! Especially "the wild life" album is huge masterpiece due to his contributions
Check out Sammy’s work with Jetboy. One guy lots of people overlook is a guy named Kyle Kyle from Bang Tango. Listen to the first two records and get ready to have your mind blown. If you think the guy from Faith no more is good. Kyle goes from slap to fingers to a pick in one riff. Songs to listen two are Love Injection, Do What Your Told and Cactus Juice
you should learn the definition of "underrated". Dave gets all the respect he deserves. He's not either underrated nor overrated. People are perfectly aware of his skill and praise him accordingly
Great list Paul! I always thought that Dana Strum, Rachel Boland and Juan Crucier deserved more credit. You could add also Rudy Sarzo (Quite Riot, Whitesnake); Skid Rose (Love/Hate) and Stig Pedersen (D-A-D)
so glad to see Mark Sandman and Alex James in this list. Next to Sandman is Chris Ballew from the PUSA. and one very often forgotten bass player is Graham Maby who played ans still do with Joe Jackson .
This is a bit of an obscure one, but check the Italian band Bluvertigo. They're virtually unknown outside of Italy, but their vocalist/bassist Morgan (Marco Castoldi) is, in my opinion, an excellent player.
I think another really underrated bass player is Carlos Dengler from Interpol, you should pay attention to his basslines in turn on the bright lights, they're the best ones, I'm not certainly sure if he made them because some people say the guitarrist made them but nobody plays them like him tbh
Jimmy Fernandez of The God Machine. They made two splendid albums "scenes from the second storey" and " one last laugh in a place of dying..." Check out these songs: Dream Machine, The Desert Song, Ego, Purity, In Bad Dreams.
I think Burke Shelley of Budgie is definitely underrated. His playing is so well set to the other two instruments and could vary from light to heavy and back again in the same song. He was good when he played. Not necessarily the best, but a solid player who got a lot out of that instrument. And he could sing too. Just my opinion, but I think Budgie is still a fun listen.
I wouldn't say these bassists are underrated but I'd love to see a video on how to sound like Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam or Tim Commerford of Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave/Wakrat/Prophets of Rage
Rex Brown: Anyone that could keep up with Dimebag Darrell playing at 100 mph on strings 4x the mass deserves a lot of respect. I know. I used to play bass in a trib called "Penntera".

Jimmy Bain was and still is a very underrated bass player (Rainbow, Dio) that deserves more recognition. His style/sound is very interesting.
I think Mike Starr is a underrated bass player and I'd love to see you do a video of how to play like him
Yes!!
extremely understated and unique sound for sure would love to see that video
Mike Starr was a real good one.
Agreed. Nice profile pic btw

Yeah, he’s a bass monster and it requires a dedicated episode of “how to sound like...”. 😎

I think a bass player that often gets overlooked is D.D. Verni of Overkill.
One of my favorites
My favorite when I was growing up as a bass player. Had the honor of opening up for them 2 times and he was cools as shit!
Rudy sarzo is underrated. He played with quiet riot, ozzy, white snake
Also played with Blue Oyster Cult. Well, at least one tour. He has been one of my favorite musicians since 1983.
Rudy has been playing in the Guess Who for the last few years and at 70 he's still a beast. I went to see the band a year ago and they put on a great show. Would love a video about Ben Shepherd from Soundgarden. Brilliant bassist, co writer for many hit songs.
Excellent video, I’m biased but I think all bass players are underrated for their contribution to rock……..but then I’m a bass player 🙄😉
Dee Dee Ramone and Tommy Stinson should be on this list. Dee Dee pioneered fast all-downstroke playing and Stinson was a huge part of the Replacements’ sound and was a member of Guns N’ Roses
It's amazing you mentioned Alex from Blur. He really was an influence for some of us that were into britpop at the time.
Mike Mesaros of the Smithereens, Mike Star Alice in Chains , Greg K the offspring, Eddie Jackson Queensrych, Jack Gibson Exdous , Peter Baltes Accept
Wow Mike Mesaros now that’s a great pick

Uffff! Chancellor! Really a good mention!
Justin Chancellor is not underrated.
Great list. Oliver Riedel of Rammstein should be on this list.
Also Billy Gould was a great choice. 👍
How about: (1) Eric Stacy (Faster Pussycat), (2) Eric Avery (Janes Addiction), and (3) Peter Baltes (Accept)
Eric Avery absolutely. Great bass player.
The Late Great Paul Vincent Raven of Killing Joke. Underated.

Raven was great. He also did some good work with Prong
Tom Araya and Tim Commerford
