He is an outlier. Don’t expect him to age like an inlier. He might become the GOAT, he might become injury ridden and he never surpasses his Rockies season. (70% chance he is goating within 2 years)
One thing people who haven't watched the Spurs don't realize is that while, yes, they have a terrible record still, they've made gigantic leaps as a team over the course of the season. While Victor has improved, so has the team. This is nowhere near the same team that we saw at the beginning of the season (some of that has to do with the Point Sochan experiment -- awful). They were 11-44 at the AS Break, and are now sitting at 21-60. While still having a losing record, they only won 11 of 55 games and now have won 10 of 26 since.
The experiment was useful though: Sochan increased his season assists/game by 36% with less turnover, improving his playmaking abilities and versatility. Wemby learned other skills at the 4, and had to learn faster outside of his comfort zone, making him learn/improve new skill, observing what he can do. All that while making everybody having to share the ball and create better for themselves and others, and tanking.
This is what I've been trying to say. Ppl was all about Wemby when the Spurs basketball is team basketball. The very young core they have can and will be good enough to compliment Wemby. The next 2 seasons will be exciting for sure
@@GuillaumeRx Yes indeed. Plus 19 of their losses were gave by 6 points or less... and could have been wins if Wemby played 32 or 33 minutes instead of 29 (we all saw what happens when he is out : Spurs become the worst defensive team of the league and a much weaker offensive team). Sure Pop tanked and we can imagine he won't do it again this season, so we will see another Spurs team. With 2 top 10 (8) picks and no funny experiment at the lead, no way SA isn't at least a play in team in 2024. GSG.
@@Ebriel0000000 Yep, 7th most Clutch games in the league (41 games), with the 3rd worst win ratio (about 30%), behing WAS and DET who didn't have that many close games.
Great video! Luv every second of it! Thank you! Wemby's rookie season is over now, so this is really good for my mental health hahaha. Keep it coming, bruh. Hope you'll also make a video about Wemby in the Olympics this summer =)
I’ll never understand how you could say he’s the defensive PLAYER of the year but then say he won’t win it because other players around him don’t play defense and think that’s a valid reason. It’s not the defensive TEAM of the year trophy. If Wemby doesn’t win it, it’s because they’re robbing him and everything else is just an excuse.
What he means is: Based on stats, eye test, and individual accomplishments, he, and many people believe, rather legitimately, that Wemby deserves DPOY (even though Gobert also deserves it in some ways, so there are good arguments for both, it's subjective, but Wemby has great arguments). So: - In his opinion, Wembanyama is the DPOY. Because he thinks he had the individual accomplishments to deserve it. BUT: He won't win it BECAUSE it's an award given by voters, and how the voters vote determines if he will win it in reality. The people who vote usually take win-record into account for DPOY (whether we like it or not), so, assuming the voters don't create a precedent, and make an exception for Wemby this year, which they could, (they usually are rather conservative old heads about these things), Wemby won't win the DPOY, realistically. It's not exclusive: You can say "He deserves it and should win it, but he won't because the voters don't see it that way if you look at how they vote historically". It's "subjective personal beliefs" vs "real-life/realistic expectations'. He deserves it, but voters won't give it to him because of his team. We can think it's unfair because it's supposed to be an individual award, but realistically, that's exactly what will happen.
@@GuillaumeRxVictor is a one man wrecking crew with the stats to back it up. The defensive rating when he’s on the court versus when he’s off tells the true story of his defensive presence…not the actual win column which involves other factors beyond the defensive players capabilities. That being said, I understand what you’re saying. Maybe it’s time to change the name of the trophy to defensive player plus team wins trophy.
@@creative.lights Man, don't worry, you don't need to convince me. I'm a French Spurs fan. I know the stats, watched 90% of his games from start to finish this season. And watched him in France before that. I know he deserves it. He's the DPOY to me. It's just that the voters won't give it to him because "team record" blah blah blah.
Yup since January 1st Wemby is averaging 23.1 PPG 10.9 RPG 4.4 APG 1.2 SPG and 3.9 BPG on 48% shooting and 34% from 3 in just under 30 MPG so he is getting better as the season went along. His stats aare lower than normal because he really struggle at the start of his career averaging under 19 PPG before January 1st. Victor next season is probabily easily going to average 28 PPG 13 RPG 5 APG 1.5 SPG and 4.5 BPG. A full offseason of improving his game is scary. If the Spurs are a good team next season he could very well win MVP as soon as next season.
would be nice to go for new projections next year once we know what type of lineup they will have both for his stats and is he going to be a top10 player next year Something i didnt see anyone talk about is how dominant he might be during the olympics, he has more experience with fiba rules than other players of his caliber and fiba rules are good for big guys anyways
wemby is the embodiment of defense wins championships….i can already see him in the finals, game coming down to the wire, he blocks 4 consecutive shots, opponent chokes
I always think of Dream with what you’re speaking on. He would just lock in and swat shot after shot. Vic is a different thing though. Both are also great keeping in passing lanes and just getting defections in general.
I think it's a great rookie season. Not the best ever, but it's definitely up there. His defense 100% translated and continually improved throughout the course of the season, but it's his offensive improvements that really surprised me. I expected a slower rate of growth on that end, but he just blew my expectations out of the water from late December onward. He's been playing at a truly elite level on both sides of the ball for half the season. I think he'll have a HUGE sophomore season. I wouldn't be too surprised if he winds up in All-NBA Team 1 and MVP discussions this time next year. His stats have improved from his play with met92 in France, where he averaged 21/10/3 with 3 blocks on 47/28/83 splits, despite playing in a much more difficult league. I understand that per 36 is a flawed stat, but he put up 20/13/5 with 4+ blocks and 1.5 steals. He’s a top 20 player in the league imo. Not the best rookie year - that’s probably David Robinson (or wilts but he played in the Stone Age)- but comparing it to rookies in his age bracket, entering the league at 19, it’s probably the best ever. What stands out more is his hunger to win. When being told he was the first player since Michael Jordan have back-to-back games with 5+ steals and 5 blocks, he replied with ‘I wonder if he did it in wins’. He has had some crazy games - 40/20, 20/20, a 5x5, triple double with blocks, a near quadruple double on the best player in the world, a 33/16/7 with 7 blocks game. It took Lebron James 1969 minutes and Michael jordan 1448 minutes to score 1k points - it took Wemby 1377 minutes. In no way am I saying that he will reach the levels that those 2 have, but quite simply, the league is fucked.
NBA history is probably a stretch (if he played the way he did from January on the whole season it might be different) but the case is real for best since 2000 is very real, definitely up there with guys like Bron, Melo, Blake, and Luka
@@TerranovaBasketballStudy Oh he's quite easily the Best Rookie of the 21st century, slightly better than Luka's and Bron who were absolutely great as well (Bron being younger, to be fair). Not the Best Ever overall, but it certainly is in that realm, especially if you take age and minutes played into account. Also, I tend to not compare anybody with pre-merger GOATs because the league and game were so different back then that it's not possible to compare fairly. Wemby's rookie season is definitely among the best ever, all things considered. And the only ones that come to mind are mostly from All-Time greats, almost universally regarded as Top 20 or even Top 10 all-time: Wilt, Kareem, Magic, Bird, MJ, Hakeem, David Robinson, Shaq, Duncan... Most of them played almost 8-10 more minutes per game and were older rookies, and/or on way better teams. Nice club to be compared to anyway. Wemby probably has the highest ceiling we've ever seen. Although there are still a lot of things that need to go right to get there, he's got every tangible and intangible attribute to retire in that GOAT convo, assuming health.

last time the spurs played the pistons vic got shut down? he had a triple double in 21 minutes bro
You mean the game on Jan 10? haha very funny bro
