    You should have a look at the Wellmaking HL-800: 80W + bowens mount + fresnel + Battery on the light and Vmount adapter for $200. just replace the swivel with fotodiox ultra heavyduty flash bracket ($15) for example to have a pretty good very light and compact overall solution

    I believe the Sokani X60 v2 has sorted out both the yoke and the fan noise. Would you say 2m is the max distance you'd have this light from the subject before fall off?

    So I actually picked up the GVM 80W prior to seeing this video. $120 for the light, umbrella, stand, and reflector. The output is great imho but it lacks control. There's just a dimmer switch on the back. Construction is plastic but doesn't seem too bad. Fan noise isn't bad. Definitely a usable budget option.

    So a problem I have found that Gerald didn't seem to have or didn't mention. The Bowens mount is WAY to lose. I can pull off the included reflector without depressing the button and my Light Dome 2 can also be pulled off without depressing the release. To fix this I have used 4 or 5 small strips of gaff tape to wrap around the Bowens mount where each of the 3 prongs rest when attached. This has fixed the issue and still allows plenty of wiggle room. I have torn down the whole light and I'm looking at adding a potentiometer to the fan to slow the speed as it is very loud. This unit Does have a temp sensor on it. I suppose in case it overheats, it just shuts the light off. Interestingly the fan has a fan speed control wire however it is cut from the factory! Also looking at a Wedge Locking Washer instead of just a regular washer to sure up the yoke and hopefully support my Light Dome 2. The metal yoke seems to be strong enough to handle the weight. Overall I'm enjoying the light!

  • @PhillipSkraba
    @PhillipSkraba 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Looks like a pretty cute light G! I need to pick something stronger up as I have the SL60. The Godox VL300 looks pretty cool, though I’m totally in love with the 300d II, just need to sell my soul for that 🙈

  • @MadRC
    @MadRC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for this, I recently got the SL60 and am overall very happy with it, the new model seems better on the noise and at 3ft im not hearing it at all. will look at these as a second light for the workshop studio. my only real complaint is the handle on the SL60 feels flimsy and with the box in its a lot of weight.

    Bought 2 of the Godox a few years ago to change it up from the Aputure LED panels and get some of those Bowen S light modifiers to put to use.
    They're alright, but Aputure really hits the price VS reward sweetspot of course.
    But y'all know a camerageek... all the funds towards cameras and lenses first... with lighting and audio at first being somewhat of an afterthought.
    We'll address that... at like, some point. xD

    • @geraldundone
      @geraldundone  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I agree. Aputure is the sweet spot for sure. Especially with their 2nd gen stuff. They have very few shortcomings, but still offer a pretty great value. Because, yeah, I also agree that lighting is often a better investment than more cameras.

  • @truonghoangnhan110
    @truonghoangnhan110 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It'd be cool if you do a modding tutorial to fix the quirks: replace the shitty cable, replace the fan, add v-Mount, and switch or mod the yolk, that'd make this thing a killer since the godox is great but the size is a tad big for what it is, especially with the gigantic cap for the chip

  • @beeflixproductions995

    I just discovered an rgb version of this fixture on Amazon, but haven’t seen any reviews, curious if you’d be able to get a review copy. Seems to have been released last spring so wondering if it has the v2 refinements, but also really curious how bi colour plus rgb would perform in a cob fixture as I haven’t seen this from any major manufacturer yet.

    • @LittleFjords
      @LittleFjords 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gabriel Maia yes I would also like to know how they compare

    • @mitchdoll1254
      @mitchdoll1254 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some differences with the Forza 60 is that the Forza can run fan-less under 50% the fan is also small and a bit noisy when running. In certain set-ups its been something I've had to address in post to clean up. The battery grip is sold separately, I haven't ordered or tried it yet as the reviews are not fantastic on the battery-grip, but it would be convenient. The colour seems accurate to my eye, extremely happy with that. Some other differences are the lack of an umbrella holder, which I purchased an umbrella holder to solve that problem. I would probably recommend the Forza to someone looking to create a very compact and portable lighting kit. The Forza is smaller than you might think, especially with its mini-bowens mount. I use it mostly with a folding umbrella so its an extremely compact package. Thats where I think the Forza would make sense, for someone who wants a compact and accurate light. Otherwise the lights mentioned in this video might make more sense because of the cheaper price point.

    • @LittleFjords
      @LittleFjords 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mitch Doll yeah I've used the forza a few times, but would like more scientific comparison of output, color, and fan noise. Being able to turn off the fan is a useful feature but most of the times I'd want the full output

  • @Steveeland
    @Steveeland 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the SL-60W (for me in Europe Neewer not Godox, still same) has a better build, I can put a big soft box on it (for cheap), cheaper, bicolor, and the remote is good enough (can be turned off). I don't get why I should choose the Sokani over it. Big fan of the SL-60W, we don't have issues with the noise with using the Samson CO2s (based on your recommendations, thanks). I need some smaller lights in the set which have bowens mount, but this one haven't convinced me.

  • @cameraramblings4107
    @cameraramblings4107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    version 2 has a much improved mount and now supports heavier modifiers. I’m happy with it. You can even power it from a v mount with a v mount to dc cable making it a great little outdoor light. I’ll see if it stands the test of time I’ve only had it a few days so need to try it on a few shoots.

    Wow not bad.
    As for the wire coming out of the brick, being that is DC low voltage in not surprised that engineers want to keep the length short. I would think that's an off the shelf power brick as well. I wouldn't want to run 15volt DC more than a few feet.
    Thank you. I may grab this light.
    Although every non aputure light I have has a less likeable color imo to my aputures

    Hey Gerald! I have an off topic question. Does anyone make a good camera with decent video capabilities that would, for example, stay trained on me while I mow the lawn? I have a big lawn, so it would need to be able to zoom & rotate itself. Now that I think of it.... it would need to have the ability to be controlled from my smart phone so I can ensure it's doing it's job, has enough battery left, can switch from video to still, etc. Or do I still need a guy for that?

    You mentioned that the output wasn't even close to the aputure 120d Mark II, but what about the original 120d? Alot of folks still have that and the output from that is enough for a lot of folks needs.
    Plus I think you mentioned its brighter than the good and from what I remember the godox is ssssuuupppeeeerrrr close in output to the original 120d.

    These lights are getting better and better but keep running into these kinds of issues. The Godox is good for the price but the airflow design is horrible for thermals and suffers a similar weak yolk and louder fan than one would want.
    Would love to see a video trying to DIY tackle the sokani's issues such as replacing the fan & thermal compound with higher quality ones, beefing up the yolk much like your washer trick and figuring out if a v-mount battery rig would work and for how long it would power the light. Then compare the total price and time it took to fix the sokani vs the price of a 120d mkii.
