    They are great I will take them both but they are not from the original Shelby production they are continuation cars made in the 1980's and 90's hence the Fiberglass body on the Cobra and not the original Aluminum. If you listen to the videos he says so 4:50. The GT40 is a MK5 made in the 90's they were not the original Aluminum Chassis but in fact a unibody car as he describes at 26:18. On the GT-40, when he was speaking about the push from the air that had passed through the radiators - I remember hearing engineering tests on Rolls-Royce Merlin-powered WW2 aircraft like the Spitfire where a re-design of the exhaust stacks gained something like 12 miles per hour for the plane's top speed - using the power of the exhaust for extra boost.

      True also for the Mustang sister ship, the T-28. I flew the T-28B in Navy flight training as the first stop on my way to my Navy Wings. As I recall the NATOPS indicated some 12% added exhaust thrust at full power. There may have been a graph as well in the back of the book. The nine-cylinder radial was equipped with a two-stage supercharger, requiring a blower shift at 12,500ft during climb-out.

    • @alisonleaman333

      I think originally the Merlin's exhausts pointed forward, to minimise the risk of the pilot's view being obscured by the oil spots etc coming out.

    Pantera guys must be going nuts. They were mostly sold at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships - and they sold poorly. I wanted one in the worst way when I was a kid. They were magnificent cars, and all the parts have Ford parts numbers. A large underground exists to support them and their problems are well-known. Buy one that is already sorted from a Pantera Club member.

    For the curious:
    The Detomaso Pantera were assembled in Italy and used a Ford sourced 351 Windsor engine in the first year of production (1971). Ford imported the cars for North America and sold them through their Lincoln Mercury dealer network that same year.
    In 1972 the engine was switched to a Ford 351 Cleveland and it used that engine right until 1988 and then switched to the Ford 5.0 V8. Ford ceased importing/selling the Pantera in 1975. The Pantera was built from 1971-1992 (7,260 cars total) There’s a lot more to the history of the car you can read about on Wikipedia

  • @monkeybarmonkeyman
    @monkeybarmonkeyman ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When the Pantera was released in the states, I was in high school. I drove to my local Lincoln Mercury dealer, walked right up to one on the showroom floor. It was a somewhat deep brown metallic. I looked over the sticker then the bottom line. $9999.95
    I had to chuckle... they kept it under $10K. This in the day when I'd bought a brand new Toyota for 1/5th that amount. I just found it very hard to believe anyone had that kind of money, in those days, to buy something so... so impractical. Wasn't much you could do with it... long trips would have been painful. I'm 6'4" - couldn't get into it (doors locked of course) but just looking inside hurt. 🙂
    A couple years earlier I'd tried to convince Dad he needed a Mustang 🙂Instead, he got a Mercury Montclair with a 390, 2bbl. No Mustang but she would go faster than I ought to have driven her.

    • @donhammer186
      @donhammer186 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Warren explained that "in fact" both are original. If you are referring to the fact that neither car came of a Ford production line, semantics! No ford GT-40 was mass produced on a production line, all were purpose ordered by racing teams. The ACE Cobra can be considered a kit car only in that they were special ordered by customers with the body work done in the U.K. and frame and chasses in the U.S..

    Pantera - body/chassis by De Tomaso in Italy, Ford engine, I think the transmissions were by ZF - European.

      A lot of zf transmissions made it into Fords. The zf5-42 and zf5-47 was the granny low 5 speed transmission available in all Ford trucks for over a decade. The zf6 was the 6 speed mated to the 6.0 diesel. The 05-06 GT also had a zf transaxle.

    Come on you guys...car guys that don't know beans about cars? Looked like you had never been up close to a Pantera before, and a 302 in a Pantera? How about 351 Cleveland. You don't know what a 1966 Mercury Cyclone is? OK, you're not FORD guys. Stick to the GM stuff. Sorry to rain on your parade. I still enjoyed the video. Wish I could've been there to ask the right questions.

    If you don't know say so . Bluffing your way thru what these cars and engines are is very irritating . Learning some history on the 427 SOHC {it's not a 427 production engine} . Detomaso in Italy built the Pantera sold in the US by Lincoln/Mercury 71 to 74 , powered by a mid engine 351C , 4bbl . I own #2264 .

    I have to disagree with him on the movie. He said Phil Remington was mentioned "ONCE". Thats totally untrue. He was in the movie for most of it. He went by his nickname "Pops". He was with Shelby at Willow Springs, he was helping take orders for the Cobra. He designed the entire braking assembly and suspension to be switched out. He was drawing the sketch while chatting with Peter. He was in the movie A LOT!
    He helped with the aero when they got the yarn and tape and took out the Ford computer. He was timing it when Ken drove the 427 the first time at Dearborn. Did they say his actual name? A few times, but you learned he went by his nickname Pops!

    Pete Brock gave an interview explaining the aerodynamics of your car. He designed the air flow of the GT. At the time nobody gave it a second thought. After the win at Le Mans they all wanted the secrets. I spent 30 years as a Hang Glider pilot and flew Pete's UP wings and could appreciate his genius.

    The list of cars in this shop at tyeh beginning of teh comment section is far from complete.Ther are a lot of cars they did not talk about sitting ther that are icons also. I could spend 2 weeks 15 hours a day just looking and not eve h;ave him talk about them. Of he were talking and givving history about tehm , make it 3 months , 15 hours a day.If you could have him dictate the info in his head , It would fill 2000 plus old size motor manuals , if done in extra small print. What a nationsl treasure this guy is. I hope he leave all we saw her to the smithsonian or henry ford muscem. Either one would require an extra wing to be added on, and you would have to make reservations to sspend 2 days viewing it all.
